Important Wedding Dress Alteration Tips

Schedule Alterations Ahead of Time

Time really is of the essence when it comes to wedding dress alterations. It is vital that you schedule your alterations well in advance, giving yourself plenty of time for additional fittings and adjustments, including emergency modifications. It is recommended to schedule your wedding dress alterations 2 to 3 months before your actual wedding day. Prepare enough time to have at least three appointments with your tailor.

The same time schedule applies to additional bridal alterations, such as tuxedo and bridesmaid gowns. It is recommended to schedule those alterations at least three months out to ensure that everyone included in the wedding is ready to go by your special day.

Be Realistic With Your Alteration Expectations

Before scheduling to have your wedding dress altered, it is important to be realistic with your vision. Ask yourself, “Are my wedding dress modifications even possible?” This is an important question to ask because you could be setting your expectations too high, which can ultimately set yourself up for disappointment later on. Furthermore, you do not want to waste any money going back and forth with a tailor who cannot perform your desired modifications.

Be Realistic With Your Alteration Budget

It is very easy to underestimate the cost of wedding dress alterations. For this reason, it is important to set yourself up for success by creating a realistic budget for all tailoring services related to your wedding, including your wedding dress, bridal alterations that you might be paying for out-of-pocket, and your soon-to-be spouse’s tuxedo alterations. In 2022, the projected average for wedding alterations is around $750. If you are paying for your bridal party’s alterations, you can expect this price to double or triple depending on the number of people in your wedding and the types of garments being altered.

Find the Best Tailor in Town

Your wedding day is one of the most important milestones of your life, and therefore, deserves the highest quality alterations. Be sure to do your research and find a local Indianapolis alteration shop with the highest customer reviews and ratings. You want a wedding dress tailor who has extensive experience and the resources necessary to perform the highest quality craftsmanship on your luxury fabrics, and in a time frame that works for you.

Keep Your Measurements in Mind

When you are starting the process of wedding dress alterations, it is vital that you keep your measurements in mind all the way up until your actual wedding day. A lot of brides like to lose weight or get fit before their wedding day, which can backfire if they don’t schedule a final fitting after losing the weight they wanted to lose. On the opposite end of the scale, it is important to consider any weight gain that might take place before your wedding day, like brides in the early stages of pregnancy or patients who are scheduled for a plastic surgery enhancement or augmentation.

Clearly Communicate With Your Tailor

Many brides make the mistake of not speaking up when it comes to their wedding gown alterations. At each fitting, it is important to be very clear with your tailor on your overall vision for your dress. Many alteration shops are still old-fashioned and will perform bridal adjustments that might be outdated compared to modern-day fits and drapes. To avoid excessive fittings and adjustments, be very transparent with your tailor on how you want your dress to fit. If something doesn’t seem right, speak up. They want you to!

Bring All Wedding Dress Garments and Accessories to Every Fitting

Perhaps one of the most important wedding dress alteration tips, and surely the most frequent mistake made by brides, is to always bring in every single undergarment and accessory you plan to wear on your wedding day to each wedding dress alteration fitting. This includes shoes, veils, sashes, garter belts, lingerie, hosiery, panties, brassieres, corsets, shape wear, hair extensions, hair accessories, and even jewelry. Every single thing you put on along with your wedding dress can impact how your dress fits overall. So, it is important to have all of these elements with you for every single fitting to ensure that your alterations are on the right track.

Try to Come to Your Alteration Appointments Alone

Although it might not feel natural, it is strongly encouraged to come to your alteration appointments alone or with just one other person. Your wedding dress is all about you, and outside opinions can really impact your decision-making during a fitting. Not only is it more effective to communicate with your tailor when you are alone or with just one other person, but it allows you to indulge in your own personal vision. You can better avoid second-guessing your wishes based on someone else’s suggestion or comment. Furthermore, alteration shops are usually tight spaces. They are not great for accommodating large crowds.

The 4 Elements of Men’s Trouser Measurements

Measuring for men’s trousers doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply focus on the numbers that will be most impactful to the overall fit. What You Need To Measure Men’s Trousers

You will need a few materials in order to properly measure for men’s trousers. Start with measuring tape. Be sure to also have some pen and paper on hand. Additionally, you will require a pair of helping hands of your choosing. These materials will help you generate an accurate finished measurement for men’s pants.

Where to Focus Your Measurements

When measuring for men’s trousers, start with the waist measurement, then measure the hips, inseam, and outseam. These four elements will deliver the most accurate foundation for measuring men’s trousers.

Waist – To measure a man’s waist, hold your measuring tape around the abdomen tightly, directly above the hip bones, and right below the belly button. Basically, you want to look for the natural indentation of the waistline and measure there.

Hip – To measure a man’s hips, circle the measuring tape around the fullest part of the seat region. Be sure to pull the tape tightly to get an accurate reading. Then record your measurement.

Inseam – To accurately measure the inseam of a man’s trousers, you will need to do the measurement with the pants on. Place your measuring tape along the inner seam of the left or right pant leg, starting where the pant leg seam meets the groin seam. Measure all the way down to the ankles and record your numbers. Do the same thing on the opposite leg, as some inseam measurements will not be the same.

Outseam – To measure the out seem of a man’s pants, you also need to do the measuring with the pants on them. Begin by placing your measuring tape along the outer seam of the pants on either the left or right side of the trousers. Measure from the top of the waistband all the way down to the ankles and record your findings. Do the same measurement on the opposite pant leg. Record these findings as well.

? Sizing Your Pants

Picking the right fit for your stature is how you can achieve a stylish look that works for you. So be sure you are considering your build when choosing a pant size. Are you big and tall? Or perhaps tall and slender? Maybe you are short and slender? Make these considerations before making a final purchasing decision. Read our blog, “How to Choose the Right Pant Fit for Men” to learn more about matching your build to the perfect pair of pants.

? Alter Your Suits

Tuxedos and suits are not just for weddings anymore. A suit can be dressed into many different styles for many different occasions. But in order to look your best while getting the perfect comfort and feel, you’ll need to make a few tweaks. After all, a well-tailored suit or tux can make a world of difference in fit and fashion. Sleeves, lapels, blazers, jacket lengths, collars, necklines, hems, pleats, cummerbunds, dress shirts, zippers, buttons, pockets, and even ties and pocket scarves occasionally need altering.  The same goes for boy’s suits and tuxedos.

? Manage Sweat Stains

Whether you are active in sports or work outside in the hot sun every day, your body is bound to sweat. In order to protect your clothing from permanent stains, you must take the proper precautions, like using fabric softener and buying clothing that is made with better quality material. But sweat stains can still happen, and when they do, be sure to take immediate action to remove them. One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pretreat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout®  You can also make your own solution using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Every wedding calls for some type of alteration. Whether it’s the bridal gowns, reception hall curtains, or the matrimonial dress itself, wedding alterations are more common than cake! Find Qualified Alterations

The first thing to consider when it comes to wedding and bridal alterations is where to go. We are not talking about location, we are referring to the actual alteration specialist or shop. Wedding dresses are precious and bridal wear is expensive, so it is important to take them to a highly trained, experienced, and accomplished tailor for professional-grade alterations. Look for years of experience, high regards or memberships from respected organizations, community recognition, and past work. Be sure to read reviews and don’t hesitate to ask other patrons and client about their services.

Know Your Terminology

Once you find a reputable and skilled wedding tailor, it is important to get familiar with terms and processes for bridal gown and wedding dress alterations before your first consultation. This way, you are not overwhelmed with industry jargon and lingo you don’t understand. There are countless alterations that exists for apparel and home goods alike; however, when it comes to bridal wear and wedding gowns, there are three principle types. These include hemming, sleeve alterations, and bodice alterations.

✨ Scheduling ahead is vital for wedding alteration consultations. Be sure to always bring all accessories and garments to your fittings. This includes slips, shoes, veils, jewelry, gloves, undergarments, and more.

Expect to Pay a Pretty Penny

When it comes to the cost of wedding alterations, final invoices can vary greatly. Rates are defined by the complexity of the work done, the time it takes to complete, the style of dress, and the quantity of garments. It is important to understand that wedding alterations are not going to be cheap. Wedding dresses are not cheap, so the alterations for them shouldn’t be either. You get what you pay for in the alterations business. Poor quality work is cheaper than master tailor services. But just because wedding alterations are not cheap doesn’t mean they are not affordable.

✨ Discuss your budget with the alteration specialist BEFORE moving forward with any work.

Start Early On

Be sure to always give your tailor at least 8 weeks to complete your Wedding Dress Alterations. This is ample time to complete all necessary work, while having some extra time in case of an emergency or last minute repair. Alterations are time consuming, meticulous work. The more time your tailor has to complete the alterations job, the better the results will be.

4 Wedding Dress Issues You Can Easily Avoid

You’ve read all the guide books, visited all the seminars, interviewed all your married friends, and covered dozens of magazine articles swearing they have all the answers to planning your perfect wedding. So you feel like you’ve learned everything you need to know to make your day go by smoothly. However, all the literature in the world cannot prepare you for those small, easily overlooked wedding dress blunders that tend to happen to even the most A-type bride. Fortunately, these easily-overlooked wedding dress issues are just as easily avoidable with the right facts!

Walking Around

Many brides do a great job at remembering to bring in their shoes along with their dress to their alteration appointment for an accurate cut and fit. Trying on your wedding dress with the shoes you intend to wear on your big day is very important in order to get the proper length and flow you want. But one mistakes brides make is not walking around in their dress and shoes at the alterations appointment. Often times, standing in your shoes and dress is easy, but walking around can prove to be a difficult task. Practice walking in your dress and shoes before the actual wedding day, and make the proper adjustments to be as comfortable as possible.

More About Shoes

On the topic of wedding shoe issues, walking isn’t the only task to consider. If you are not wearing the most comfortable pair of high heels for your wedding ceremony, be sure to bring a change of shoes for your reception. You don’t want to walk around with blisters and miss out on all the dancing! Instead, bring an extra pair of shoes that are practical but stylish. Be sure to walk in them first as well to see if they are a good fit for your dress.

Many brides hope and pray for good weather on their day, but there is no controlling Mother Nature! So when you are planning your wedding day attire, be sure to consider the weather. Look at seasonal trends and decide if your wedding date is going to be a wet or rainy day. Wet ground can be extremely soft and muddy for days after a rain storm, and heels will sink right through. If you are having an outdoor ceremony or reception, this will be a huge burden. You might need to prepare to wear flats if the ground is going to be wet and soft.

Just like shoes, it is highly recommended to try on your dress with the jewelry you intend to wear on your special day. What may seem like a good choice can actually turn out to be a pestering issue all night. For example, you could wear a bracelet that ends up catching on your lace dress all night long. Not only is this obnoxious, it leaves behind frays and imperfections.

Common Sewing Terms and Definitions

If you are just entering the sewing world, you are new to many terms and phrases that you’ll find in beginner sewing instruction manuals. You will notice terms like ”basting” and “backstitching” that can confuse you when trying to following sewing instructions. To become a veteran sewer, it is necessary to learn and understand these terms. Continue reading for a list of common terms and phrases used in the sewing industry, and the meaning behind them all.

Make Sense of Sewing Instructions

If you want to understand what your instructions are telling you, you must first learn what certain terms mean and then try to practice them. Below is a list of 8 common sewing terms that every seamstress should know. Read and review them, remember them, and then practice them!

Ease. Ease refers the amount of space between the garment and the body. Easing into fabric is generally accomplished by sewing machine basting (see below) to draw fabrics closer together than their original manufacturing, without tucks and gathers in the fabric. An example would be easing in fabric to let a curved sleeve align straight with a jacket body.

Bias Grainline. A bias grainline is a thread line that’s at a 45 degree angle to the lengthwise and crosswise grain of the fabric on the bolt. These are commonly used cuts for making pillows and pot holders.

Selvedge. The selvedge is the edge of the fabric when it is taken off the bolt. This is where the manufacturer information and care instructions are located. It is generally bound and doesn’t fray.

Armscye. The armscye is simply the hole in your fabric where the sleeve or arm will go. In order for garment pieces to fit together properly, changes to the armscye will require adjusting the sleeve of facing as well.

Appliqué. Appliqué is a method of fabric artwork that involves placing a smaller piece of fabric on a larger piece of fabric to create a certain affect or result. The fabric is generally attached by means of hand-stitching or machine sewing.

Clean Finish. When you see the phrase, “clean finish” in your sewing instructions, it is referring to folding over the raw edge of the fabric and hand stitching the seam close to or on the folded edge. The raw edge should be anywhere from 1/8th to 1/4th inch, or smaller for fabrics not prone to fraying. This is also referred to as “turned and stitched.”

Backstitching. Backstitching is sewing forward, then sewing back over the seam just sewed, over and over again back and forth, to create a locked end seam to finish sewing. It prevents the seam from coming undone. Generally two or three times over is enough to do the trick.

Baste. To temporarily join fabric together while attempting a step in the sewing process is to baste. Basting fabric is a method of temporarily holding two or more areas of fabric together in order to create a separate stitch or task. The basting is removed once the particular task is complete. Machine basting is used to ease in and gather fabric.

Men Have Tailoring Options Too!

When you think of alterations, images of dresses and gowns might pop into your head; but alteration services aren’t just for women and girls. Men have tailoring options too! A well-tailored suit or clothing is next to gold for some men. In fact, a properly tailored suit or tailored clothing can make a man look that much more dignified and professional. Aside from suits, there are several other types of tailoring options and common alterations for men’s and boy’s clothing. Continue reading and learn some other tailoring possibilities for the guys!

Suits and Tuxedos

Tuxedos and suits are not just for weddings anymore. A suit can be dressed into many different styles for many different occasions. Whether a leisurely night on the town, a company conference, or a black-tie function for charity, a well-tailored suit or tux can make a world of difference in fit and fashion. Sleeves, lapels, blazers, jacket lengths, collars, necklines, hems, pleats, cummerbunds, dress shirts, zippers, buttons, pockets, and even ties and pocket scarves occasionally need altering. To get that perfect comfort and feel, men’s clothing sometimes need a few tweaks to get it just right. The same goes for boy’s suits and tuxedos.

Denim and Leather

Men are known to own many pairs of jeans. They keep buying more and more, so they must love the way they feel. But to get an even better look and more comfort, denim alterations will do the trick. Men are commonly getting their new jeans altered for length and width. Men who are exceptionally tall like to have their jeans custom made, which is something a trained tailor can certainly do! In addition to denim hemming, take-ins, and width adjustments, zippers, pleats, and pockets are often in need or repair or alteration. Again, the same applies to boy’s denim clothing.

As for leather, men like their leather jackets, belts, and more. And since these garments are generally expensive, it is likely for them to be altered or repaired when in need. Cuffs, sleeves, shoulders, rips, tears, zippers, and more can be altered or repaired by a trained tailor.

Jerseys, Uniforms, and More

Other common garments worn by men and boys are sports jerseys and uniforms. Whether a school jersey or uniform, or for work, alterations are important to keep them in their best condition possible. Certain jerseys are not replaceable, therefore, when a repair or alteration is needed, it can truly save the garment from becoming trash. Work uniforms sometimes cost money to replace, so when a zipper is broken or a few buttons go missing, the best option is to take it to an alteration shop for a cheap and quick repair.

How to Label a Sewing Machine for Beginners

The most intimidating part about being a beginner seamstress is understanding the sewing machine. There are several different styles and brands of sewing machines, but no matter which one you decide to buy, as a beginner, it is imperative to know what each part is and what it does. Learn how to label your new sewing machine if you are just starting out in the sewing world. It will greatly improve your memory when it comes to the parts of your new sewing machine. Many beginners start out this way, and many have reveled in the fantastic benefits it provided them. Continue reading to learn which parts of a sewing machine you should label for a quicker and more effective memory and skill-building strategy.

Parts to Label

It’s best to get familiar with all the knobs, levers, and buttons on your sewing machine first. Locate these parts and apply a label with its name and its function. By becoming familiar with these parts and the function the serve, you will feel less intimidated about starting your first sewing project. Here’s a list of the parts you should label on your sewing machine, where they are located, and the purpose they serve in terms of sewing, stitching, and patchwork:

Length Stitch Knob

This knob is located at the top of the machine, on the right side. So think, “top-right” when looking at your machine. You can spot this knob because it should be marked with a number series, starting at one and ending at five.

Stitch Width Knob

The next part to label is the stitch width knob. This is also marked by a series of numbers representing different stitch widths, just as the length stitch knob mentioned before. This knob is located right next to the stitch length knob, generally on the left side.

Tension Control Knob

The third, but equally important, part to label on your new sewing machine is the tension control knob. This should be located on the front-side of the machine next to or near the needle.

Thread Take-Up Lever

The fourth part to label is a thread take-up lever. This can also be found at the front of the machine, and to the left of the needle. Take note that this part is also somewhat inside the machine. It takes thread up and down, in the machine.

Reverse Lever

Next, locate and label the reverse lever, also called the even switch. This part is can either be found at the front of the machine, to the left of the needle, or it can sometimes be on the left-side of the machine. It depends on the make and model sewing apparatus you have.

Handle Wheel

The last part to label is the hand wheel. You can spot this part at the top, far left side of the sewing machine. For newer models, this will look like a large knob, while older models have a metal wheel.
