Sewing Advice for Denim Fabrics

For decades, denim has been a staple in men and women’s fashion. And virtually every person in the nation has some form of denim clothing in their closet. This is because denim is a widely-versatile fabric to work with, as well as, long-lasting and comfortable to wear. Jeans, shirts, skirts, jackets, blazers, and even purses and shoes are common apparel made from denim. So if you are a novice sewer ready to take on a denim project, then continue reading to learn some tips and tricks to working with denim alterations and sewing projects.

Needle and Thread

Denim is a strong and sturdy fabric that can certainly stand the test of time, but it can also test the strength of your sewing needles. Denim is known to break a few needles in sewing machines, so it is important to choose the proper sewing needles to protect your supplies and your project. On top of the having the right needles, you also need to invest in a quality thread for the same reasons. There is no way a heavy fabric like denim will bind together with a weak or flimsy threading material. So go the extra mile and get yourself a high-quality needle and thread.

Always Pre-Wash and Dry

Never, ever skip a pre-wash and dry when it comes to sewing with denim. Without pre-washing and drying denim fabric, you are at risk of shrinkage and color transfer issues. Not only does this jeopardize your initial measurements, it will change the overall result of your garment. Pre-washes also soften the fabric, making it much easier to work with. Just be sure to wash with like colors and on the same cycle you will use in the future for the garment.

Sharpen Your Tools

With denim, you need sharp tools. Start with an extra-sharp pair of scissors, which are available at most fabric and craft stores for under $30. Next, you want to be sure your rotary cutter is sharp. You may need to replace the blade. This will make pattern cutting much easier and prevent fraying disasters. And last, you will want to get yourself some strong pins to hold your fabrics together during the different stages of your project. Sturdy sewing pins should not bend when they are being used.

More Tips and Tricks:

  • Practice a lot!
  • Take your time. Sew denim slowly.
  • Pay close attention to seams.
  • Keep an iron hot to flatten seams as you sew.
  • Consider buying a specialty pressor foot.
  • Use a zig-zag stitch over the cut edge on interior seams.
  • Use a professional tailor for complex denim alterations.

Advice for Preshrinking Fabric

If you are just starting out in the sewing world, you may not realize the importance behind preshrinking your fabrics. Well trust the experts that say you should always preshrink fabric before starting a sewing project! If you skip the preshrinking process, you risk damaging your completed garment after it is washed and dried for the first time. You may think you can get away with skipping this step, until one day all your hard work and labor goes to waste when your freshly-finished scarf is shrunk down to a potholder after it is laundered. And shrinkage is not the only effect to predetermine, color change and fade are as well. Avoid these devastating consequences by simply preshrinking your fabrics!

Review Fiber Content in Fabrics

When you are purchasing a new roll of fabric for an upcoming sewing project or design, it is important to know your fiber content. These rolls are called bolts, and at the end of them are specifications regarding the fabric. They provide information on the best methods to laundering the fabric, as well as, the fiber content and dimensions.
If you own a cell phone, it is helpful to take a photo of the specifications on each bolt of fabric you purchase. Then you can go home and download the information to your computer, and always have instructions on file regarding each fabric’s care instructions and fiber content. If you don’t have a phone or camera, a trusty pen and notepad are all you need! Simply write down the specs of the fabric and tuck the piece of paper into the fold of the bolt to save it there for future reference.

Preshrink Process

Follow the laundering instructions on the bolt end and wash the fabric before constructing your garment. This will tell you how the fabric is going to respond to being laundered, so look for color changes, fading, and shrinkage. If it shows too much of all three, you probably don’t want to use that fabric for your project. This is why preshrinking fabric is a great tester.

If the fabric is good and you decide to move forward with your garment, be sure to pass along care instructions if it is intended to be a gift to someone else. This way, they do not damage your gift in the first wash. For fabrics that are dry-clean only, you must take it to the dry cleaners to have it preshrunk and tested. It is not recommended to preshrink dry-clean only fabrics in the washer and dryer.

Men Have Tailoring Options Too!

When you think of alterations, images of dresses and gowns might pop into your head; but alteration services aren’t just for women and girls. Men have tailoring options too! A well-tailored suit or clothing is next to gold for some men. In fact, a properly tailored suit or tailored clothing can make a man look that much more dignified and professional. Aside from suits, there are several other types of tailoring options and common alterations for men’s and boy’s clothing. Continue reading and learn some other tailoring possibilities for the guys!

Suits and Tuxedos

Tuxedos and suits are not just for weddings anymore. A suit can be dressed into many different styles for many different occasions. Whether a leisurely night on the town, a company conference, or a black-tie function for charity, a well-tailored suit or tux can make a world of difference in fit and fashion. Sleeves, lapels, blazers, jacket lengths, collars, necklines, hems, pleats, cummerbunds, dress shirts, zippers, buttons, pockets, and even ties and pocket scarves occasionally need altering. To get that perfect comfort and feel, men’s clothing sometimes need a few tweaks to get it just right. The same goes for boy’s suits and tuxedos.

Denim and Leather

Men are known to own many pairs of jeans. They keep buying more and more, so they must love the way they feel. But to get an even better look and more comfort, denim alterations will do the trick. Men are commonly getting their new jeans altered for length and width. Men who are exceptionally tall like to have their jeans custom made, which is something a trained tailor can certainly do! In addition to denim hemming, take-ins, and width adjustments, zippers, pleats, and pockets are often in need or repair or alteration. Again, the same applies to boy’s denim clothing.

As for leather, men like their leather jackets, belts, and more. And since these garments are generally expensive, it is likely for them to be altered or repaired when in need. Cuffs, sleeves, shoulders, rips, tears, zippers, and more can be altered or repaired by a trained tailor.

Jerseys, Uniforms, and More

Other common garments worn by men and boys are sports jerseys and uniforms. Whether a school jersey or uniform, or for work, alterations are important to keep them in their best condition possible. Certain jerseys are not replaceable, therefore, when a repair or alteration is needed, it can truly save the garment from becoming trash. Work uniforms sometimes cost money to replace, so when a zipper is broken or a few buttons go missing, the best option is to take it to an alteration shop for a cheap and quick repair.

How to Choose the Right Pant Fit for Men

Men come in all different statures, dimensions, sizes, shapes, and more. All men’s bodies are different, so it takes some knowledge and a little experience to know how to dress yourself in a way that flatters your unique build the most. When it comes to clothing, not every fit is treated equally! Depending on your particular figure, clothing will fit differently. It is up to you to use the right combination of style and awareness of fit, to find the right pair of pants for you. Continue reading to learn how to match yourself to a pant type that suits you and your shape the best.

Get the Right Look!

Picking the right fit for your stature is how you can achieve a stylish look that works for you. Match your build to the descriptions below and learn what pant-type you should be looking for!

Big and Tall

The gentlemen that fit in this category have long legs, and with either a big or flat abdomen. Either way, they will need a pant with a long rise and long leg length. For full abdomens, try a flat front pants in a full cut, and for flatter mid-sections, try a flat front or pleated pant.

Tall and Slender

For taller men, boot cut or trim cut pants flatter their height best. They can also try flat fronted pants or pleated pants, with or without cuffs. Buy regular rise pants with longer leg lengths are key for these builds.

Short and Slender

Shorter men look best without all the excess bulk. Choosing flat front pants over pleated pants eliminates this unflattering bulkiness by reducing fullness in the thigh down to the ankle. Look for short-rise or low rise pants, something with a shorter inseam, like a trim cut.

Short and Heavy

Heavier set, short men want to shop for flat fronted, full cut, and low rise pants. This is a difficult combination to find on the racks, so most gentlemen have better luck using an Indianapolis men’s tailoring shop to achieve a comfortable and flattering fit.

Just Short

Men who have average builds but are just short want to dress themselves in a pant with a low rise, short inseam, and preferably no cuffs. Cuffs can just emphasize a shorter stature. Try flat front pants, and avoid pleated pants.

Short Torso, Long Legs

This is a tricky build to dress, but it turns out that a short rise pant with a longer inseam really does the trick! Try boot cut, low rises, and traditional cuts for the most gratifying fits.

Long Torso, Short Legs

For these particular builds, we just do the opposite of short torso and long legs. This means buying pants with a long rise and short inseam. Lean towards traditional cuts with flat fronts.

Big Belly and Thighs

Men with big bellies have trouble keeping their pants from sliding down. In order to combat this problem, try on flat fronted traditional cut pants for a comfortable and flattering look. Don’t make the mistake of buying a larger pant size so it feels better around your waist because then the rear will be too big. Also, steer clear of pleated pants.

Big Belly, Flat Rear, and Thin Thighs

These builds also have a hard time keeping their pants from sliding down due to their big bellies, but it is hard to find a proper pant fit with thin thighs and a flatten rear. Men of this stature should look for pants with a trim cut and a flat front. This will ensure a proper fit in all these areas. Pleated pants will only emphasize these traits so avoid them.

Small Waist, Big Thighs

This is the build that works well with pleated pants. They give you ample room in the backside and thigh area, providing comfort and style. Long rise and full cut pants are the best option here.

The easiest way to get the best fit for your pants is to trust an experienced tailor to alter your pants and suits for an optimal fit! A tailor can custom fit and alter pants, suits, dress shirts, cuffs, sleeves, coats, jackets, and more to fit your perfectly.
