How to Choose the Right Hand Sewing Needles

Sewing by hand is a handy skill to have. But in order to perfect your hand-sewing skills, you must dedicate yourself to years of trial and error. If you are just starting out, one of the first steps is choosing the right sewing needle for the job. Since needles are used to pull thread through fabric with the goal of joining fabrics together, hand sewing needles need to be thin enough and sharp enough to penetrate numerous types of materials. The needles that you will need for your hand-sewn project will depend on various factors, including the material being stitched, the type of sewing you need to do, the function it will serve, and much more. Continue reading to learn all about hand sewing needles, and where to find the best selection for purchase.

Hand Sewing Needles

Hand sewing needles come in an endless selection of sizes and points. Size refers to the length and width of a needle, and point refers to the sharpness of its tip. They also come with various sized holes at the opposite end of the point, where the thread is tied through. The most common type of hand-sewing needle is called a “sharp.” They are medium in length when compared to standard needles, and retain a rounded hole for threading. These features make it perfect for virtually any type of fabric, which is why they are so popular.

When a straight needle will simply not fit, you can use a specialty needle instead. Specialty needles, like circle needles, are highly effective for hand-sewing upholstery and other curved fabric garments. Keep in mind that thinner needles are best for thinner materials and fabrics, whereas, thicker needles are necessary for tougher, courser materials, like denim, leather, and canvas. Using this rule will help you gauge which size needle you need.

Hand sewing needles are very affordable too! You can buy them for cents on the dollar at any local fabrics store, crafts store, or any store with a sewing section. You can purchase a pack of 100 needles for under $5! However, be sure to invest in high-quality needles when you are sewing higher-quality or expensive fabrics. Or you can just choose professional alteration services instead!

Continue reading to learn which parts of a sewing machine you should label for a quicker and more effective memory and skill-building strategy.

Parts to Label

It’s best to get familiar with all the knobs, levers, and buttons on your sewing machine first. Locate these parts and apply a label with its name and its function. By becoming familiar with these parts and the function the serve, you will feel less intimidated about starting your first sewing project. Here’s a list of the parts you should label on your sewing machine, where they are located, and the purpose they serve in terms of sewing, stitching, and patchwork:

Length Stitch Knob

This knob is located at the top of the machine, on the right side. So think, “top-right” when looking at your machine. You can spot this knob because it should be marked with a number series, starting at one and ending at five.

Stitch Width Knob

The next part to label is the stitch width knob. This is also marked by a series of numbers representing different stitch widths, just as the length stitch knob mentioned before. This knob is located right next to the stitch length knob, generally on the left side.

Tension Control Knob

The third, but equally important, part to label on your new sewing machine is the tension control knob. This should be located on the front-side of the machine next to or near the needle.

Thread Take-Up Lever

The fourth part to label is a thread take-up lever. This can also be found at the front of the machine, and to the left of the needle. Take note that this part is also somewhat inside the machine. It takes thread up and down, in the machine.

Reverse Lever

Next, locate and label the reverse lever, also called the even switch. This part is can either be found at the front of the machine, to the left of the needle, or it can sometimes be on the left-side of the machine. It depends on the make and model sewing apparatus you have.

Handle Wheel

The last part to label is the hand wheel. You can spot this part at the top, far left side of the sewing machine. For newer models, this will look like a large knob, while older models have a metal wheel.

Tips for Balancing Tensions on Sewing Machines

Whether you are just starting out, or you are an accomplished sewer, learning to control and balance tensions on a sewing machine is an integral part of the skill. Proper tension balancing delivers a perfect stitch, as well as, the capacity to adjust tensions for different types of fabrics and materials. Although it requires years of practice, experience, and trial and error, eventually you will get tension balancing just right. In the meantime, it is always helpful to review tips and tricks for balancing tensions on a sewing machine. Continue reading to do just that!

Sewing Machines and Tension Balancing

In order to learn how to properly balance tensions on a sewing machine, you must have general sewing machine knowledge and be able to locate and utilize their features; like the bobbin and bobbin case, bobbin tension screw, upper tension assembly, presser foot lever, presser foot, stitch length and width dials, needle plate, and so on.

Before balancing the tensions, it is best to first start with some standard preparations and a few tricks of the trade. For example, be sure to use a light-colored thread shade on top and for the bobbin. It is recommended to always use high quality mercerized threads. Next, insert a brand new needle. Many people choose to use a size 14, but use whichever size you are most comfortable with, or the size the alteration calls for. Do this while keeping the needle bar in the up-position. Go forward by threading the machine and the bobbin case. Then finish by bringing the bobbin thread upwards and through the needle plate as if you are preparing to sew.

Now, set your sewing machine to its widest and longest stitch settings it allows; for straight stitch machines, set it at the longest basting stitch. Upper tensions should be between 3 and 5 for older setups; while newer machines should be set to auto.

First Step

The bottom thread tension should easily pull out of the bobbin, and slide smoothly from the needle plate opening. You can check this by using your hands to feel for smooth and easy accessibility. Although it takes practice and experience to know what proper tension feels like, you at least get the idea of what to check for.

Second Step

Go ahead and place a tester material underneath the presser foot. Try to use a dark colored fabric and fold it in half. Use this to test the stitch quality by sewing one length. Longer test fabrics allow more room for stitch testing.

Third Step

Once you have tested the stitch, inspect the finished stitch quality. If there seems to be some stitches that are skipped or abnormal, then you probably need to repair your machine. It is not a tension balancing issue at this point. If the stitch is pulling off, or the knot is showing, then your tensions are too loose. Tighten bobbin cases in 1/8 increments for accurate adjustments. Once the knot is no longer visible, then your tensions are well-balanced.

How to Choose the Right Pant Fit for Men

Men come in all different statures, dimensions, sizes, shapes, and more. All men’s bodies are different, so it takes some knowledge and a little experience to know how to dress yourself in a way that flatters your unique build the most. When it comes to clothing, not every fit is treated equally! Depending on your particular figure, clothing will fit differently. It is up to you to use the right combination of style and awareness of fit, to find the right pair of pants for you. Continue reading to learn how to match yourself to a pant type that suits you and your shape the best.

Get the Right Look!

Picking the right fit for your stature is how you can achieve a stylish look that works for you. Match your build to the descriptions below and learn what pant-type you should be looking for!

Big and Tall

The gentlemen that fit in this category have long legs, and with either a big or flat abdomen. Either way, they will need a pant with a long rise and long leg length. For full abdomens, try a flat front pants in a full cut, and for flatter mid-sections, try a flat front or pleated pant.

Tall and Slender

For taller men, boot cut or trim cut pants flatter their height best. They can also try flat fronted pants or pleated pants, with or without cuffs. Buy regular rise pants with longer leg lengths are key for these builds.

Short and Slender

Shorter men look best without all the excess bulk. Choosing flat front pants over pleated pants eliminates this unflattering bulkiness by reducing fullness in the thigh down to the ankle. Look for short-rise or low rise pants, something with a shorter inseam, like a trim cut.

Short and Heavy

Heavier set, short men want to shop for flat fronted, full cut, and low rise pants. This is a difficult combination to find on the racks, so most gentlemen have better luck using an Indianapolis men’s tailoring shop to achieve a comfortable and flattering fit.

Just Short

Men who have average builds but are just short want to dress themselves in a pant with a low rise, short inseam, and preferably no cuffs. Cuffs can just emphasize a shorter stature. Try flat front pants, and avoid pleated pants.

Short Torso, Long Legs

This is a tricky build to dress, but it turns out that a short rise pant with a longer inseam really does the trick! Try boot cut, low rises, and traditional cuts for the most gratifying fits.

Long Torso, Short Legs

For these particular builds, we just do the opposite of short torso and long legs. This means buying pants with a long rise and short inseam. Lean towards traditional cuts with flat fronts.

Big Belly and Thighs

Men with big bellies have trouble keeping their pants from sliding down. In order to combat this problem, try on flat fronted traditional cut pants for a comfortable and flattering look. Don’t make the mistake of buying a larger pant size so it feels better around your waist because then the rear will be too big. Also, steer clear of pleated pants.

Big Belly, Flat Rear, and Thin Thighs

These builds also have a hard time keeping their pants from sliding down due to their big bellies, but it is hard to find a proper pant fit with thin thighs and a flatten rear. Men of this stature should look for pants with a trim cut and a flat front. This will ensure a proper fit in all these areas. Pleated pants will only emphasize these traits so avoid them.

Small Waist, Big Thighs

This is the build that works well with pleated pants. They give you ample room in the backside and thigh area, providing comfort and style. Long rise and full cut pants are the best option here.

The easiest way to get the best fit for your pants is to trust an experienced tailor to alter your pants and suits for an optimal fit! A tailor can custom fit and alter pants, suits, dress shirts, cuffs, sleeves, coats, jackets, and more to fit your perfectly.

What is an Alterations Tailor?

An alterations tailor is a professional seamstress that customizes or alters clothing, apparel, and other existing fabrics or garments. They are different from standard tailors because they do not typically create and fabricate clothing or apparel; instead, they alter or service existing pieces. Alterations tailors are commonly employed by large-scale department stores, clothiers, or they operate their own private business. Professional alteration specialists can alter or fix clothing, apparel, home décor, fabrics, and more. They perform these duties for men, women, adolescents, children, infants, and more.

Professional Tailoring Services

There is no end to the types of fabrics and clothing an alterations tailor will fix. They accept old clothing, costumes, new clothing, barely-worn clothing, wedding attire, suits, curtains, and more. These alterations can range in level of difficulty, from simple to highly complex. This is why there is no definite price or cost associated with tailoring services. It is all dependent on the amount of time, labor, and materials needed to complete the task.

Most alterationists prefer to have their client present for measurement and assessment purposes. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. When a person cannot be present for a fitting, the alterations can be much more difficult to complete. In the case that a client cannot come in for an appointment, the tailor will simple receive the article of clothing with a tag on it, explain the alteration instructions. This is not the best case scenario for customer or tailor. Measuring the progress of a custom fitting or alteration is vital for a perfect fit or repair.

The most prevalent requests at an alterations shop is clothing repair. Ripped or torn clothing, stretched collars and sleeves, lapels, pockets, hemlines, and more are the most common alterations for clothing. As for formalwear, wedding dress alterations is by far the most popular. Almost every bride requires Indianapolis Wedding Dress Tailoring to get that perfect fit. The same goes for bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos.
