How to Purge Your Closet for the Summer

Even though the time for spring cleaning has pretty much passed by at this point, many people are ready to purge their closets and make room for new clothes. After all, those sweaters and vests and puffer jackets won’t be of any use to you the rest of the season and the fast-approaching summer! Whether you want to reorganize your closet from fall-winter to spring-summer, create more storage space, or curate a whole new wardrobe, there are 3 simple rules to get you started and stay at the most efficient pace.

Begin With Some Basic Organization

Start by organizing your clothing according to what can and cannot be altered for a better or updated fit. Rather than spending hundreds of dollars on a new suit or dress, have it professionally tailored. Virtually all clothing articles can be repaired, adjusted, or altered. Broken zippers, frayed fabrics, torn leather, unraveled sequence, and more can be fixed with the right professional on the job. Be sure to choose a qualified Indianapolis alterations shop for the best service and long-lasting results.

Be Prepared to Make Some Hard Decisions

When you are purging things in your closet, the goal is to make more space, either for clutter control or to make room for newer things. For this reason, you will have to equip yourself with some strength and determination to follow through with the purge. Be prepared to make some tough decisions regarding what to keep, what to stow away, and what to eliminate. You might want to hold on to the past 5 year’ worth of Halloween costumes, but encourage yourself to be reasonable.

Donate Old or Non-Redeemable Clothing

For the articles of clothing in your wardrobe that are beyond reasonable repair or repurposing, do not toss them in the garbage. Instead, donate them to people or organizations that need them, such as homeless shelters, animal shelters, school art programs, and similar places. For clothes that are perfectly good but obsolete in terms of fashion, donate them to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill center.

Keep in Mind That You Can Alter Clothes That Don’t Fit Anymore

Clothes that fit better look better. But you might have avoided altering your clothes all this time due to a misconception about cost. You might think clothing alterations are out of your budget, but the truth is, they can save you thousands of dollars in new clothing purchases. The same benefits apply to home décor like bedding and curtains. You would be surprised to learn just what professional seamstresses can fix, adjust, and repair!

Need some help refitting some of your favorite pieces in your wardrobe at an affordable price? Call Yong’s Alterations at 317-845-9077 for more information about our alteration services in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Is Your Sewing Machine Swallowing Fabric?

There are plenty of frustrating mishaps and mechanical errors you can experience with your sewing machine, especially if you have been sewing for several years. Running into problems like these are bound to happen at some point on the sewing machine learning curve. However, this does not mean that you cannot change your approach when necessary to avoid such problems.

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077
Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

One of the most complained-about issues is fabric swallowing. If your sewing machine is swallowing all your fabric, use these nifty tricks to remedy the issue for good!

1) Use a Finer Sharper Needle

You always want to use a needle that is fine enough to sew through the fabric you are using. If your needle is too thick, it can force the fabric into the hole beneath the presser foot. In the case that your sewing machine is swallowing a lot of fabric, try opting for a finer, sharper needle as a solution.

2) Seal Up the Needle Plate Hole

Although it may sound odd, you can try to cover the needle plate hole with something that can withstand the friction and heat of a sewing machine, like sticky clear tape. Just be sure you place it underneath the hole and not on top.

3) Never Start Sewing on a Raw Edge

When you are sewing, never start on a raw edge of a piece of fabric. Instead, start from an inside point and work your way to the edge of the fabric, especially if you are sewing pleats or darts. For slippery fabrics, start from at least 3/8th of an inch from the edges.

4) Avoid Back Tacking at the Start of the Seam

Not only do you never want to start sewing on a raw edge, you do not want to tack back in the middle of a run. Instead of doing this, turn your piece over and then sew over the gap that you left at the beginning.

5) Change to Chain Stitching

Chain stitching is a method that involves sewing one piece of fabric onto another piece without stopping, raising, and lowering the presser foot in between. You can use this approach if your machine is swallowing fabric a lot.

How to Make Your Jeans More Comfortable Around the Waist

Now that the holidays are over, it is common to find yourself feeling a little less comfortable in your most comfortable pair of jeans. And since it is not likely an option for you to don elastic stretch pants all day, you’ll need to figure out another way to overcome the holiday bloat. But you don’t need to hit the treadmill extra hard or restrict yourself to all-juice diet. Instead, try out these easy and effective tricks for making your jeans more comfortable around the waist!

Here are some effective tricks for expanding the waistline of your favorite pair of jeans:

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077
Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

☑ Soak and Tug

Soak your jeans in a bucket or tub of warm water. Do not use cold water since it may tighten the denim fibers and reverse your objective. Allow the jeans to soak for a few minutes until they are entirely saturated. Remove them from the water, ring the excess water out, and then use your hands to stretch out the waistband of the jeans. Repeat this step as many times as needed, and then allow your jeans to hand dry.

☑ Tuck and Walk

Another way to stretch out the waistline of your jeans is to use the tuck approach. Start by putting on your pair of jeans. Then find something solid that can fit on the inside of the waistband, such as a deodorant stick or remote. Tuck them on the left and right side of your pants, and then walk around for an hour. This will stretch out the fibers enough to make the waistband a little looser. If you cannot fit something on both sides, just do one side.

☑ Iron and Heat

Use an iron to eliminate any wrinkles in your jeans. This will instantly give you more space. Then, continue to heat up the waistband until it’s hot. Put on your jeans while the denim is still hot, tuck your shirt in to avoid burning yourself, and walk around in your jeans for several minutes. This will make the fibers more flexible and give you more breathing room around the waistline.

☑ A New Button

For those who are handy with a sewing needle and thread, you can simply remove the existing button, and re-position it an inch or so to widen the waistline. Even with only a little sewing knowledge, this task is fairly simple and straightforward. If you want just a temporary fix that does not involve sewing, try using a rubber band instead. Simply unbutton your jeans, insert the rubber band through the button hole, and then loop both sides around the metal button. This gives instant leeway in the waistline, making it perfect for post-dinner plans.

Three Effective Remedies for Stain Removal

Last month, we cover the most effective ways to get rid of unwanted pet hair on all sorts of fabrics and apparel. This month, we want to discuss 3 full-proof methods for removing stains from your favorite clothes, as well as, curtains, tablecloths, place mats, rugs, and more! Continue reading to get started!

Spills and stains are bound to happen everywhere they can. Anything made of cloth or other form of textile are prone to permanent, unpleasant staining. In order to prevent stains from setting in, it is important to take immediate action when a spill or smudge occurs. More importantly, you must take good care of your fabrics for optimal stain resistance, and to maintain dazzling luster for as long as possible.

Stain Removal Tips

Clothes, uniforms, costumes, rugs, mats, upholstered furniture, and curtains are most susceptible to stains like blood, grease, makeup, coffee, mud, paint, wine, vomit, gum, food and more. All of these stains can be extremely difficult to remove if left ignored or untreated. So they key to resolving a stain is to act immediately.

When a spill or stain happens, immediately blot up any excess liquid or substance using a terrycloth towel or rag. Never wipe, rub, or smear in a blemish! Start from the outside and blot in a circular motion, working your way inwards. Take note that tougher stains, or ones that had time to set-in, will usually require professional treatment.

Here are three helpful remedies for stains like these and more:

Dry Cleaning Solvents

The first remedy for stains is dry cleaning solvents. Brands like Carbona® and Energine® are examples of dry-cleaning solvents on the market, and come highly recommended by professionals. Just be sure to always read the label before attempting to treat a spot or stain with a dry cleaning detergent you are not familiar with.

Also, it is a good idea to pre-test a spot on the material you intend to clean beforehand, to ensure the product is safe and non-damaging. Use the cleaning and blotting tips above, removing any excess liquid, and allow to dry completely. Finish with multiple rinses of the detergent from the treated material.

Protein Enzyme Detergents

The second remedy involves using a type of protein enzyme laundry detergent, which is just a fancy way of describing common cleaners like Tide® or Era®. Not just for clothes, protein enzyme laundry detergents can also be used to treat stains on carpeting, rugs, curtains, and upholstered furniture, and more.

Take note that you must dilute the detergent down by using only 1 part detergent and 30 parts water. This ratio is important so that you do not create uncontrollable lather and suds on your material. Use the cleaning and blotting tips mentioned before, then rinse the treated area thoroughly until the detergent is entirely gone. Multiple applications might be necessary depending on the severity of the stain.

White Vinegar & Rubbing Alcohol

The third remedy for stain removal is to use two common household products: distilled white vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Combine 1 part distilled white vinegar with 9 parts rubbing alcohol. Ethyl, denatured, or isopropyl are acceptable forms of rubbing alcohol. Simply apply the mixture to the affected area, followed by the above-mentioned cleaning and blotting techniques. You may need to repeat these steps for best results.

4 Simple Steps to Setting Your Seam Guide to Sew Curves

If you are having trouble getting accurate seam allowances, it may help to review some tips for setting your sewing machine seam guide. Continue reading to learn the 4 basic steps to setting seam guides for sewing curves.

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Start With the Right Materials

To set a seam gauge accurately, you will need some specific materials. If you already have these items, be sure they are still in good condition. If they are old, you may get better results by replacing them with new ones. Here is what you will need:

SEWING MACHINE
SEAM GUIDE
SEWING GAUGE
TAPE MEASURE

You will need to cut out the patterns according to the requirements in the pattern directions. The only way to ensure your pattern pieces will fit together accurately is to get your seam allowances are set correctly. You must practicing watching the seam guide while not the moving sewing machine needle to achieve consistent seam allowances.

Use the Tape Measurer on the Sewing Machine

Refer to the mark on your tape measurer, and then place the machine needle directly on top of it. Next, place the presser foot down on the tape measurer so that it does not move while you work. Also, line up the markings on the presser foot with the markings on the tape measurer to ensure it is straight.

Set Your Seam Gauge

Now place your seam guide at the edge of your tape measurer. Double check that it is perpendicular to the tape measurer. It is also important to make your seam guide the proper length; do not make it too long, and be sure that the fabric will move underneath the needle.

Set Your Seam Guide

When sewing curves, be sure your turning point is directly horizontal with the needle. To set up your turning point, place the sewing gauge right behind needle so that the end of the gauge is even with the edge of the seam guide. Then draw a line along the edge of the seam gauge. The mark that meets the edge of the seam guide is where you will line up your fabric to make your sewing curve.

How to Remove Sweat Stains From Clothing

Sweat is nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone perspires; it is a natural and healthy function of the human body. Although we must embrace our perspiration, it does not mean we have to let it ruin our favorite clothes! Continue reading to learn how to get rid of unattractive armpit and sweat stains from clothing!

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Perspiration stains on shirts are not just unsightly and awkward, they are seemingly impossible to get out. No matter how many times you run them through the washing machine, the tell-tale, yellowish-brown staining still remains resilient to detergent as ever. They mostly develop as a result of a combination of factors aside from sweat, including body oil, skin flakes, and chemicals in underarm deodorant.

But you don’t have to toss out your favorite tees or turn them into rags just because they are discolored and stained from sweat! There are some effective ways to get rid of them, and you can do it with just a few simple-to-use, store-bought items.

Store-Bought Option

One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pre-treat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout® Triple Enzyme Formula Laundry Stain Remover Spray, both available on Amazon.com for under $10. Simply pre-treat the affected area, and then launder as usual.

Homemade Option

You can also make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. These are highly effective cleaning agents that are safe to use on clothing. You will need a large plastic bowl, a small bowl, a tea kettle (or pot), rubber gloves, scrubbing brush, standard laundry detergent, a microwavable liquid measuring cup ,and of course, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

Here’s What to Do:

Turn your shirt inside out and place it in the large plastic bowl with the armpit sections facing up.

Check the label of the shirt. If it contains spandex, you will need to use a separate approach at this time.

a. If it DOES NOT contain spandex, boil water on the stove, and then pour the boiling water directly over the armpit stains.

b. If it DOES contain spandex, dampen the shirt with cold water first, and then proceed with step a. Hot water can damage the fibers in spandex, so dampening it with cold water will help protect the fibers while removing the sweat stains.

Using your small bowl, combine equal parts (1/4 cup of each is plenty for one shirt) of water, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. The baking soda works well to whiten the fabric and absorb any residual odors, while the hydrogen peroxide disinfects.

Special Note: Because this solution contains hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, it cannot be made ahead of time and stored for later use. Only prepare this solution at the time of treatment, and then discard the remainder down the toilet.

Apply a scoop of your solution and apply it directly to the stained areas, then scrub it in with your scrubbing brush. When thoroughly scrubbed in, rinse clean with water.

Now, simply launder the shirt as usual. If the stains are still visible, repeat this process as needed.

Once the stains are gone, you can let the shirt dry, either in the dryer or by hang drying. Do not let the shirt dry before the stains are out.

Simply catch and treat sweat stains early on to increase the life of your favorite tees and shirts! If you need some clothing repairs, trust your local Indianapolis alterations shop for skilled workmanship at a fair price.

Tips for Sewing a Seam

When you sew two or more pieces of fabric together, you create what is called a “seam.” Seams are the most basic constructions for sewing. As you continue on the learning curve of sewing and stitching, you will discover that many sewing patterns instruct you to use a specific amount of “seam allowance” so that the pieces of fabric you are working with fit together properly.

Continue reading to learn more about seam allowances, and some helpful pointers for sewing a seam.

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Seam Allowances

A seam allowance is simply the amount of material between the edge of a piece of fabric and the stitching line. The most common seam allowances for modern sewing patterns are 1/4″, 1/2″ and 5/8″. If you are using a seam allowance of five eighths, that means that there will be five-eighths of an inch of material between the stitch line and the edge of the fabric.

Many sewing machines come with throat plates with built-in seam guides. However, you can also set your own seam guide on your sewing machine. In order to use the stitching guide accurately, you must be sure that your needle is in the right position. You don’t want the sewing machine needle to be in the far left position when you need it in the center!

Curved Seams

At some point in your sewing mastery, you will come across the need to sew curved seams. Sewing curves seams are just the same as sewing a straight seam except you will follow a curved edge rather than a straight one. These are common for arm holes, crotches, and other curved areas of clothing.

Flat Felled Seams

Flat felled seams are commonly seen on heavy-duty fabrics and apparel, like denim and jeans. They are seams with double stitch lines and no “unattached” seam allowance. They are used to close up all crude edges to form a durable and strong seam.

Seam Sewing Advice:

Keep in mind the importance of seam allowances and seam finishes.

Always rely on seam guides to create correct seam allowances.

Be sure to align the pin and fabric edges. You can also baste them together.

Observe the seam line while sewing instead of moving the sewing machine needles to properly sew a straight seam allowance.

Seam finishes preserve the seam allowance and stabilize the seam, making them vital aspects of an apparel sewing project.

Tips for Using Fusable Tape as an Alternative to Sewing

Did you know you can join fabric without sewing it together? It’s called fusable tape and it is gaining wide-spread popularity among apparel lovers everywhere!

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Also known as “fusable web”, fusable tape is a material that melts when heat is applied. The special formula adhesive will soundly bond together two pieces of fabric, making it the perfect “non-sewing” sewing approach. It is very much like tape, as it comes in rolls and bears comes in various lengths and widths. It is highly useful for several types of projects, including clothing alterations, costume design, home textile décor, and more.

Proper Applications of Fusable Tape

Use it for a simple and fast hem or clothing repair.
Use it when you want an invisible hem.
Cut a small patch and use it to repair torn fabric.
Use it to hold a stubborn edge that wants to twist out of shape.
Use it to simplify decorative or top-stitching.

Choosing the Right Weight

Fusable tape comes in all sorts of different varieties. So it is important that you match the proper tape with the proper application. The weight of fabric you are working with will determine which tape you will use. For example, a lighter fabric, like sheer chiffon, would require an ultra-light fusable tape variety. In contrast, a heavy knit sweater or denim will not fuse well with a lighter tape. Do not try to get ahead by using a heavy-duty tape for a lighter fabric; this is not ensuring better fusibility. Instead, it will look messy and unprofessional.

How to Use Fusable Tape:

Wash and dry the fabric piece you are working with.

Preheat your iron to low heat and set up your ironing board or station.
Iron your fabric to your desired placement.

Put a piece of tape between the two pieces of fabric you wish to fuse, and press it down with your iron until the adhesive melts.

Do not disturb or move the fabric until the adhesive has completely dried. This can take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.

Never apply the iron directly to the tape. It will stick to the iron and make a big mess! If you need to fuse tape to only one piece of fabric, use parchment paper in between the tape and the iron.

We recommend Bias® Fusible Tape, which retails around $12 for a 22-yard roll. Look for it on Amazon, or at your local crafts and fabrics store.

Can Shapewear Be Altered?

Shapewear Alterations 317-845-9077

Shapewear Alterations 317-845-9077

Shapewear has become increasingly popular over the years. It is a terrific garment for any woman of any size. Unfortunately, shapewear is not cheap; so purchasing different types of shapewear can be quite the investment. Furthermore, women are always changing in size and shape, losing and gaining weight throughout the course of their lives; so when shapewear doesn’t fit anymore, it can be a huge let down. Rather than investing in new shapewear, many women are asking whether or not they can just “let out” or “take in” their garments, and avoid the cost of buying new. If this is something you have thought about yourself, continue reading to learn more about options.

Professionally Altering Shapewear Garments

If you visit an experienced, skilled tailor, they will tell you that it is possible to alter your shapewear garment. But there is catch. In fact, there are a few. First, the cost of altering your shapewear would be very close to the cost of purchasing a brand new garment. You are looking at a difference of maybe $15 to $20 or so. This close price proximity, coupled with the amount of time and the trips you’ll make to the shop, having your shapewear altered professionally may not be worth it in the end.

Furthermore, when you have a shapewear garment altered, there is no guarantee that it will have the same affect it did before it was altered. There will almost always be a slight difference in the way the garment wears and shapes. This is simply unavoidable.

Altering Shapewear Yourself

To avoid the cost of professional alterations, you could choose to alter your shapewear garments yourself. However, this is not recommended for a few different reasons. Unless you are a skilled seamstress who has experience with sewing clothing, it is not recommended at all. Altering clothes is complex, but altering shapewear is much more complicated.

Without the right experience and knowledge, you are very capable of destroying the shapewear with inadequate work. Furthermore, if you do not already have the materials and supplies needed to implement alterations, you are looking at another investment. This could also come close to the cost of buying new shapewear or having it professional altered.
