Fabric Care Tips for Polyester Clothing

Polyester is a popular synthetic material used to make clothing and apparel, as well as curtains, upholstered items, and a variety of home décor commodities. When it comes to taking care of polyester, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Polyester is a strong and durable fabric, but also impressionable. For this reason, it requires a different set of rules compared to cottons and similar conventional materials, namely when it comes to storing, laundering, and pressing.

Continue below to review the top fabric care tips for polyester clothing and textiles, and where you can find top-rated clothing repair service in Indianapolis.

Polyester Fabric Care 101

With a little extra knowledge and effort, you can keep your polyester clothes, garments, and household items looking as new as the day you brought them home. Whether your favorite Fall jacket, the dining room curtains, a cozy blanket, or some old cushion covers, you can keep polyester fabric looking fresh and luxurious with some helpful tips.

Always Read the Manufacturer Instructions

The majority of your polyester fabrics will come with a manufacturer tag that contains laundry instructions specifically for that garment. Be sure to always check these laundry and cleaning instructions before attempting to remove the stain or machine wash your polyester. You see, not all polyester garments are 100% polyester. Many are composed with the textiles such as linen, nylon, and silk. For this reason, one polyester item may require a different set of laundering instructions than another. If the tag says, “dry clean only”, do not machine wash it under any circumstances. Only have it cleaned through a professional dry cleaning service.

Take Extra Time to Pretreat Stains on Polyester

For polyester fabrics and garments that do not require dry cleaning service, take the extra time to pretreat stains and spots prior to laundering. Whether you are washing by hand or using a washing machine, pretreating polyester stains can help maintain the structural integrity of the fabrics while also eliminating the blemish. Pre-treating stains is especially important with polyester fabrics because polyester is not necessarily a leader in the stain resistance department.

Simply use top-quality stain remover product, which you can purchase at any local department or grocery store, and allow the product to sit for at least 15 minutes before washing. If you are pretreating white polyester fabric, consider a pre-soak. But do not use chlorine bleach. Instead, combine warm water with oxygenated bleach. Pre-soak your white polyester fabrics for at least two hours before laundering.

Machine Wash Polyester on the Right Temperature and Cycle Setting

Like with any other load of laundry, it is important to wash polyester on the correct temperature setting and washing machine cycle. The temperature and cycle setting you choose will depend on the type of polyester fabric garment you are washing. Finer or fragile polyester items will need to be cleaned on the delicate cycle using cold or warm water, although cold is recommended. Hot water can break down the fibers of polyester and cause premature fading and fabric damage. Stronger polyester fabrics can be washed in the machine on normal setting with warm or cold water.

Dry Polyester Items Properly After Laundering

The universal recommendation for drying polyester clothing and household items after washing them is to tumble dry them on low in the machine. However, it is wise to consider handwriting polyester so that the shape of the item can remain intact and you don’t have to iron as much.

Use the Appropriate Iron Settings When Pressing Polyester

Just like washing and drying polyester, it is important to use the proper settings when ironing or pressing your garments. Delicate polyester items can be damaged quickly by an iron that is too hot, or even by steam that is too strong. An iron that is not set high enough may not have any pressing effect on a thick or durable polyester item, such as curtains or a blanket. Always refer back to the manufacturer’s instructions on the tag to read instructions for ironing.

2 Ways to Make Homemade Laundry Detergent

Making your own laundry detergent at home comes with a plethora of advantages. Not only do you retain full control over the selection of ingredients you use in your detergent recipes, which is the perfect solution for those who have skin sensitivities and or suffer from contact allergies, but you also save a load of money.

Continue reading to learn two ways to make homemade laundry detergent, including a powdered formula and a liquid formula.

What You Need to Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

The great news about making your own laundry detergent is that you only need a few ingredients, literally. Three ingredients are all it takes to make either a powdered or liquid laundry detergent formula. Aside from ingredients, you’ll need a few supplies on hand. The supplies you will need specifically will depend on whether you are making a powdered formula or liquid formula.

Cheese Grater
Mixing Bowl
Large Airtight Container
Measuring Cups
Large Saucepan
Large Bucket (8-10 gal)
Warm Water

Sodium Carbonate (Washing Soda)
Pure Borax
Unscented Bar Soap
Essential Oil of Your Choice

How to Make Powdered Laundry Detergent

To make your own powdered laundry detergent, start by grading down your unscented bar of soap. You may want to buy a brand-new cheese grater for the job to ensure that it is sharp and effective. Now combine one part grated soap with two parts sodium carbonate, also known as washing soda, and two parts pure borax.

Next, add a few drops of your essential oil of choice and mix well. We recommend using lavender or tea tree oil, as these are common fresh laundry scents. Transfer your powdered laundry detergent into an airtight container along with a ¼ cup measuring cup for scooping future loads. Use 1/8 cup of detergent for regular loads, and a full ¼ cup for extra dirty loads.

How to Make Liquid Laundry Detergent

Making your own liquid laundry detergent requires a few extra steps, but it is well worth it if you will prefer liquid detergent over powdered. Start by grating down the full bar of unscented soap. Next, pour 2 quarts of water into a large saucepan, add your grated soap, and then heat on low until the soap dissolves and turns into a thick liquid. Do not allow the liquid to come to a boil.

While your soap and water mixture is heating on low, add 4 ½ gallons of warm water into a large bucket. Then add a full box of pure borax and a full box of washing soda into the water and stir them together. Now pour the saucepan soap solution into the bucket. Mix everything until well combined, and then add 8 to 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix again.

Allow your detergent to sit overnight so that it may settle, and then transfer it into an airtight container. Before using, shake well. Use ½ a cup of liquid detergent for regular loads and a full cup of liquid detergent for extra dirty loads.

3 Reasons Why You Should Air Dry Your Clothes

Do you mindlessly pull out your clothes from the washing machine and instantly toss them into the dryer? If so, you may want to rethink your laundry room routine. Opting for an air drying approach delivers a wide range of benefits that can improve your quality of life and even save you some money. Continue reading to learn the top three reasons why you should air dry your clothing apparel and bedding, and what to do if your clothes or upholstered articles require some repair.

Top Air Drying Benefits

Lessen Energy Consumption

Although you may not realize it, your drying machine utilizes a lot of energy, which in turn increases your utility bills every month. By air drying your textiles, whether that means your clothing, bedding, towels, or upholstered items, you are reducing your energy consumption by a nominal amount. As a result, you actively lower your monthly utility bills and increased your annual savings.

Keep a Proper Fit

Not all of us can have our clothing custom tailored to fit our bodies, which are prone to be ever-changing in size and shape. Drying machines can shrink clothing, warp clothing, stretch out callers, and loosen elastics and fitted sheets and articles of clothing with similar stretchy binding. So, to help keep your clothes from warping out of shape, avoid using the dryer and opt for an air drying approach instead.

Reduce Wear and Tear

It is no secret that using the drying machine over and over again will eventually fade your clothing, promote lint balls, snags, and shedding, and even change the shape and fit. What does this lead to? It leads to you spending even more money on newer clothes so that you can stay looking your best. To save money on premature wardrobe replacement expenses, opt for air drying your clothing instead. This will keep your clothes brilliant and bright and help maintain the integrity of the fabric.

4 Types of Common Clothing Stains and How to Remove Them

Does it seem like no matter how hard you try your brand-new blouse or favorite tee-shirt always seems to catch a stain? Well, there are many types of stains that we encounter on a regular basis, but the four most common are arguably paint, grease, sweat, and wine! If you have dealt with clothing stains like these, it is time to learn how to clean them away and never live in fear of spilling your evening Merlot on your best dress ever again.

Get Rid of These 4 Pesky Stains!

Sweat Stains

Whether you have a gym rat in the family, or you suffer from hyperhidrosis, you likely need a remedy for sweat stains on clothing, particularly the armpits. One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pre-treat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout® Triple Enzyme Formula Laundry Stain Remover Spray. Simply pre-treat the affected area, and then launder as usual.

You can also make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Combine equal parts (1/4 cup of each is plenty for one shirt) of water, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. Next, apply it directly to the stained areas, then scrub it in with your scrubbing brush. When thoroughly scrubbed in, rinse clean with water.

Grease Stains

The upside to having a fresh grease stain on your garment is that there is a product on the market that is proven to combat grease, and it’s safe on clothing! Simply reach for the Dawn liquid dish soap to remove grease stains from clothes. Apply a generous amount with your fingers, rub it in, then rinse it away with clean water. You may have to repeat these steps a few times, but the formula in the detergent works well at pulling the grease up and out of clothing fibers.

Paint Stains

Because different paints react to different removal methods, the first step to cleaning paint off of your clothes is finding out which type of paint you are dealing with. For latex paint, use a butter knife to scrap the dry paint off inside and out. Next, run your garment under warm water and then blot it dry using a paper towel. Last, flip it inside out, rinse it again, treat it with liquid detergent, then launder as usual.

For acrylic paint stains, scrape off as much paint as you can, then blot the affected area with paint thinner using a cotton ball or paper towel. Do this inside and out, and then blot it again using liquid detergent. Finish by washing it in the laundry as you usually would.

Red Wine Stains

Spilling or splattering red wine on your clothes can really put a damper on the whole experience of having a glass or two of wine to begin with. But did you know you can easily remove a fresh red wine stain from your clothes using white wine? It’s true! The white wine has the same consistency and density as red wine, so by pouring some white over a red wine spill, you push the red wine up and out of the clothing fibers, making it easier to blot and rinse away.

This method is not recommended for light or white clothing. For garments of these hues, remove red wine by combining Dawn dishwashing soap and hydrogen peroxide, then applying generously over the stain. Let is soak all the way in, and then launder as usually immediately. This usually does the trick!

4 Fabrics You Should Never Machine Wash

Your laundry day does not have to cause you stress. By educating yourself on the best practices for washing all sorts of garments and fabrics, you can better preserve and protect your clothing and more. Although modern innovation gives us incredibly smart and highly-advanced features on modern-day washing machines, there are still some fabrics that should never be tossed into them.

Fabrics Than Cannot Be Washed in the Machine

The top 4 fabrics that should never be machine washed are cashmere, which you likely already knew about, as well as wool, leather, and silk. Whether clothing, home décor, or something else of value, be sure to wash these fabrics by hand, or at the local dry cleaner. Here’s why:

As you already know if you own anything cashmere, it is a very delicate material. So, it should not be a surprise to learn that cashmere should never been washed in the machine. Instead, take your cashmere items to a local dry cleaner for optimal care. Or, read the care instructions on the label, which will likely tell you to hand wash and dry flat.

Just like cashmere, wool is prone to all sorts of damage in the washing machine. It is best to entrust your wool laundering to a local dry cleaning company, or follow the care instructions on the tag, which usually say to hand wash in mild detergent, and dry flat.

As you can surmise, leather is not something you want to put in a washing machine under any circumstances. Not only can machine washing cause leather to shrink, but it can also cause it to permanently crinkle, misshapen, warp, discolor, and even tear. Leather should be hand-cleaned using leather-safe products and microfiber cloths. Also, learn how to get ink out of leather.

Silk is one of the softest, most delicate fabrics available in the world. Pure silk is very expensive, as it comes from the organic matter made by silkworms. It takes 12 pounds of fully-spun silkworm cocoons to produce 1 pound of pure silk material! And although silk is surprisingly durable and strong, it is far too delicate and valuable to ever machine wash. Even the cost-effective alternatives to silk fabric are not suited for machine washing.

Additional Items to Keep Out of the Washing Machine:

Structured garments like blazers, pleated skirts, or jackets with shoulder pads should not be washed in a machine, as they will warp and become misshapen.

Garments with embellishments on them, like bobbles, pearls, beads, and sequence might come apart or snag if machine washed.

Bras are not a good candidate for machine washing because they can misshapen, stretch out, or their clasps can snag and catch on other items.

Formal dresses and formal wear should also not be placed in the machine for washing. These are often made of fine fabrics not well suited for machine washing, like silk and satin. Also, they usually have appliques and embellishments, like crystals, pearls, lace, and more.

Tips for Sewing Quilted Cotton Clothing

Quilted cotton clothing is a familiar staple in almost everyone’s closet. This medium weight cotton material works well with all body types, shapes, heights, and drapes, making it a perfect addition to your wardrobe. But when your quilted cotton clothes need some altering, you might want to review some important tips for sewing clothing made of quilted cotton. Continue reading to do just that!

Quilted Cotton Clothes are Stiffer Than Other Cotton Fabrics

Quilted cotton is often used to make purses, bags, and you guessed it, quilts, but many clothing garments are also made from such materials. Because quilted cotton is a stiffer type of fabric compared to other types of cotton materials, many people are hesitant about sewing it up or making repairs. But if your cotton skirt or button-down jacket snags or tears, don’t be intimidated by the repair project. So long as you have sewing experience and know how to use your sewing machine, you should be just fine. If not, there are always professional alteration shops you can rely on to help you correct any sewing mistakes or alteration errors you’ve made.

Here are some fundamental tips to follow when sewing quilted cotton clothes:

?? Know Your Limit – As mentioned, if you are nothing more than a novice seamstress, it is not wise to attempt your own clothing repairs or projects. Even if you are a sewing hobbyist, be sure you know your talent’s limit. If you believe that the repair is too complex, it is best to leave it to a professional. If you are attempting a full clothing creation, be sure to take on a pattern that is simple and straightforward, like one without sleeves. Sleeves are hard to manage as a beginner in sewing.

?? Have the Right Tools – The right tools mean everything when it comes to any repair. As for quilted cotton, the same theory applies. Before repairing or altering a quilted cotton piece, be sure you are fully equipped with the proper materials and tools to get the job done to specification. For quilted cotton specifically, have on hand marking tools, cutting tools, thread, lining, and your sewing machine set up and accessories.

?? Practice Makes Perfect – Because quilted cotton is stiffer, it is sometimes more challenging to work with, especially of you do not have experience working with it before. Even if you are a pro at sewing, like a player up to bat, you might need a few practice swings before making your final stitches or alterations. So, use some scrap pieces of quilted cotton fabric to practice the type of stitch required to repair or modify your garment.

4 Ways to Prevent a Sewing Machine From Swallowing Fine Fabric

As someone who uses the sewing machine often, you know there is nothing more frustrating than that moment your fabric gets sucked under the needle plate. No matter how easily your sewing project is coasting along as you run your fabric through your machine, this sewing blunder can happen to anyone at any moment in time. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent your sewing machine from destroying your fine fabrics. After all these materials are not cheap; right? So, we must protect them at all costs. Plus, we want our finished pieces to come out perfect!

Rather than researching every single possible way you can prevent sewing machine fabric swallowing, simply continue below to learn the top four methods that are sure to work for you.

Indianapolis Clothing Repair and Alterations
Indianapolis Clothing Repair and Alterations 317-845-9077

Switch to a Finer Needle

When sewing with fine fabrics, one of the best ways to prevent sewing machine swallowing problems is to simply switch to a finer needle. You can find the vast array of needle types and sizes at any local fabric or craft store, as well as online, through various vendors and retailers. Opt for needled labelled 60 or 70 on the pack.

Cover the Needle Plate Hole

Although this might sound like it could impede your sewing project process, using a but a sticky tape to cover the needle plate hole is a great way to quickly stop a sewing machine from swallowing up your fine fabrics. Try to use a very small piece of tape, as small as you can make it while still covering the hole. Then, before you begin stitching, pierce a single hole in the tape with your sewing machine.

Never Start on a Raw Edge

Beginning your sewing work on the raw edge of a piece of fabric is a common novice sewing mistake. What sewing enthusiasts eventually learn is, doing so will cause your sewing machine to suck up your fabric underneath the needle plate. So, in order to prevent this from happening one surefire precaution is to never start sewing on a raw edge. For pleats and darts, start from the inside and work your way towards the edges. For seams, start a little inward from the edge.

Consider Chain Stitching

Another common method to prevent a sewing machine from swallowing up fabrics, especially fine fabrics, is to use the chain stitching approach. Chain stitching is the process of sewing together multiple pieces without stopping in between to lower or raise the presser foot. This technique is often used to speed up the sewing process. For those in a hurry, chain stitching is your go to sewing machine method.

What Can I Do if My Dress is Too Long? What if it is too short?

A simple dress hem is the perfect solution to a dress that is too long. This is a simple job that can be done in as little as a day or two. Oppositely, if your dress is a tad bit too short, there is a perfectly good solution for that too! Your tailor can add more fabric, or perhaps an under layer of tulle or chiffon, to make it the right length.

Can I Have a Zipper Removed From a Dress?

Many women buy fall in love with a dress, but not the gaudy and uncomfortable zipper in the back. Again, this is a common and simple alteration that can be completed in just a day or so. It is recommended to not try to remove a zipper on your own, as it requires specific sewing tools and hands-on experience to do it flawlessly.

What Do I Need to Bring to My Dress Fitting?

When you show up for your fitting, be sure to bring your shoes you plan to wear with you. If you plan to swap shoes in the middle of your event, bring those shoes too. It is also important to bring all other accessories you plan to use or wear on your wedding day to be sure they work with your alterations, including all undergarments you plan to wear, as well as any veils, gloves, hosiery, jewelry, and more. This helps to see if the sizes, designs, shapes, and fits work with the dress and the alterations.

Can I Alter a Dress Myself?

If you have a lot of hands-on sewing and fashionista experience, then go for it! But if you are planning to watch some instructional videos online and them attempt a dress alteration yourself, please reconsider. Although people online might make it look really easy to bring in a waist or shorten a hemline, there are more variables to it than you think. Always entrust a professional tailor for any dress alteration needs if you want flawless results that look as if you bought the dress that way!

How to Get Your Fabric Ready Before Sewing

Before you ever thread a needle through, it is important to take the proper steps to prepare your fabrics for a sewing project. Continue below to learn everything from confirming the front and backside of your material, to washing, ironing, pinning, cutting, and even identifying the grain.

Fabric Preparation Guide

When you purchase your sewing fabrics and materials at the store, they are not necessarily “sewing ready” in their current condition. To ensure the best possible results of your sewing project, it is important to pre-treat and prepare your fabrics prior to any cutting, pinning, or stitching. On a side note, if you wish to color treat or dye your fabrics, this must be done before you begin stitching as well. Here is a brief rundown on the best ways to prepare fabric for sewing:

At the store, fabrics are not fully-protected on the shelf. So, when you bring them home, they are likely covered in dust, which can contain some very undesirable, microscopic contaminants like dead skin and dust mites. So, your first best-practice for prepping your fabrics is to wash them with a quality liquid detergent, either by hand or on the delicate cycle in your washing machine. Also, be sure to lay them flat and allow them to dry to completion. Do not dry them in the dryer, even on low or air only. The process can still cause visible changes in the quality of the fabric.

Once your fabrics are clean and dry, you will want to perfect them by releasing any lines, warps, crinkles, or wrinkles. You can choose from a selection of options. You can press fabrics with a fabric pressing machine; you can iron them by hand; or you can steam them. Either way, pressing out your fabrics will give them an added luster, and make sewing much easier.

There are certain things you need to locate or identify before getting started with sewing. After washing, drying, and pressing your fabrics, your next step is to determine which is the front and which is the back. Typically, this is pretty obvious, as backsides are usually faded or have indiscernible patterns. The fabric front is referred to as the right side, which should be the side you plan to have facing outward in your sewing piece. Another important part of this step is to identify the direction of the grain. The grain is important to the way your piece drapes, and ultimately, performs. Warp are lengthwise threads, while weft are crosswise, which run parallel and perpendicular to the selvage.

Cutting and Pinning

At this point, your fabrics are ready to begin the sewing process, but not before a few more steps. Here, you can start measuring and cutting out your fabric pieces or templates. You can also start pinning any appliques or pieces to your fabrics. Be sure to avoid any wrinkles by laying your fabrics flat during this step. Also, be sure to pin pieces together inside the seam allowance to avoid bunching. When cutting, be sure your scissors or shears are as sharp as they can be for fine cuts.

Pants, Dress Shirts, and Dresses

In the spring, the weather isn’t quite warm enough to don summer shorts and tank tops. This is why spring wardrobes can be converted into fall wardrobes with a little alteration magic. By enlisting a trusted alteration specialist, you can place an order to have your pants, dresses, and dress shirts custom tailored for the fall season. Professional tailors can add sleeves to dress, take in or take out pants, depending on whether you gained or lost over the summer, and much more. Dress shirt sleeves and collars can be adjusted, slacks can be hemmed to fit boots, and spring jackets can be insulated with more fabric to be warmer.

The options are truly endless, especially since tailoring clothes is customized to the person wearing them. Best of all, altering existing clothing is much cheaper than purchasing a new wardrobe for the fall. Furthermore, you can apply this money-saving technique to winter and spring clothes as well, or even apply it backwards by turning winter clothes into summer attire!

The Secrete is in the Tailor Professional

If you want good results that you can afford, you must select the right alterations shop for the job. See our blog, “What Makes a Really Good Tailor?” to learn exactly what to look for in an alterations professional, and why it matters. One of the first qualities to look for in a professional tailor is experience.

Alterations is a skill more than a vocation, and not everyone possesses the talent to alter and tailor garments, clothing, and fabric. Just like experience, credentials also prove a company’s ability to meet client’s needs. And not just a company, an individual as well. Check to see if the company has won any awards, or been recognized by esteemed organizations for exceptional service or values.
