The Materials You Will Need to Remove Paint on Clothing

The supplies you will need for the job will depend specifically on the type of paint you have on your article of clothing. You’ll require different materials for latex, oil, and acrylic paints. So, that means that the first step to removing paint from your clothes is to find out which type of paint it is. Once you know that, you can move onto the actual cleaning process.

☐ Paint Thinner (or turpentine)
☐ Nail Polish Remover
☐ Rubbing Alcohol
☐ Liquid Detergent
☐ Liquid Dish Soap
☐ Disposable Plastic Container
☐ Toothbrush
☐ Clean Sponge
☐ Clean Rags
☐ Spoon
☐ Butter Knife
☐ Cotton Balls
☐ Paper Towels
☐ Duct Tape

How to Remove Oil and Acrylic Paint From Clothing

Step 1 – Place paper towel down to use as a foundation for your garment.

Step 2 – Whether the paint is wet or dry, scoop the excess off with a butter knife. Then turn your garment inside out and repeat.

Step 3 – Pour a cup or two of paint thinner into a disposable plastic container, like an empty ice cream tub. Then soak some cotton balls in it.

Step 4 – With the garment inside out, use the soaked cotton balls to gently dab the soiled area. As you pick up paint, continue to switch cotton balls. If the stain is proving to be difficult to remove, try pouring paint thinner directly over it and use a toothbrush to scrub. Just be sure you have a clean, dry foundation underneath.

Step 5 – Blot the freshly treated area dry with clean paper towels to remove excess paint thinner. Then blot the area with some liquid laundry detergent.

Step 6 – Wash the garment in the laundry as usual.

How to Remove Latex Paint From Clothes

Step 1 – Place paper towels and clean rags down to use as a foundation for your article of clothing, even if it’s completely dry. This prevents paint from transferring through the fibers and onto whatever is beneath it.

Step 2 – If there is still wet paint on your clothing, use your butter knife and spoon to scrap it off.

Step 3 – Run your article of clothing under warm water and then blot it dry using a paper towel or dry rag. If you are wearing your article of clothing and it is too saturated with paint, continue rinsing the best you can until you can take it off.

Step 4 – Turn the article of clothing inside out and rinse it thoroughly under warm water.

Step 5 – If your garment is color-safe, use liquid dish soap for this step. If it is not, use liquid laundry detergent instead. Apply the soap directly to the affected area and use a clean sponge or white cloth to work up a generous lather. Be sure to continue rotating rag or sponge to avoid cleaning with a soiled section.

Step 6 – Repeat step 6 as often as you need until you feel like you’ve cleansed away most of the paint. Then launder as usual and allow to air dry.

Step 7 – Once the garment is entirely dry, check the level of paint residue. If there is still paint evident, use your butter knife to scrape off the remaining paint, or apply duct tape firmly over it and peel away. Repeat this a few times, and then repeat all steps all over again.

Side Note: At this point, you can also use an old toothbrush and a small amount of nail polish remover to get paint off your clothing but be careful as it might discolor non-color safe fabrics.

The Proper Way to Iron a Dress Shirt

There is a right way and a wrong way to iron clothing. When it comes to buttoned down dress shirts, it is critical that you choose the correct approach. After all, dress shirts are sophisticated luxury garments, and just one tiny ironing mistake can ruin the entire shirt in as little as 2 seconds.

If you want perfectly crispy and flawless results with dress shirt ironing, continue below to review an easy, 7 step guide that anyone can do, and a bonus tip on how to repair clothing damaged by an iron.

Dress Shirt Ironing Tips for Men and Women

The most essential dress shirt ironing tip, whether man, woman, or child, is to take your time. Rushing through an ironing job can cause you to lose focus and make an irreversible mistake. Here are the 7 basic steps to ironing a dress shirt:

❶ Launder Your Shirt

Be sure your shirt is freshly laundered before you get started with ironing. For dress shirts, it is recommended to have them dry cleaned. This will give you the tidiest and crispiest results. If you choose to wash your shirt at home, just be sure you are checking the label and following all manufacturer guidelines. In fact, this is your next step.

❷ Read the Shirt Label

The label inside your dress shirt is more than an itchy bother; it is an important piece of literature explaining how to take care of it. Not only should it have laundering instructions, which likely say dry clean only, but it should also have instructions for ironing. For most dress shirts, labels will say, “low iron if needed.” Some labels will tell you to use a warm iron, but this will vary depending on the shirt material.

Side Tip: Using a quality spray starch can really deliver crisp, fresh ironing results that last all day.

❸ Start With the Collar

With your low to warm iron, begin by pressing the underside of the collar. When pressing the underside of the collar, be sure you are working from the center to the outer points. Simply flip the collar over and repeat the same process, starting at the center of the collar and working your way out to the edges.

❹ Move Onto Shoulders

The next area to press after your collar is the shoulders of the shirt. Do so by draping the shoulder of one side of the shirt over the tip of your ironing board. This way, you are not disturbing the rest of the fabric. Iron from the yoke toward the back section of the shirt. The yoke is the area of the shirt that meets the collar.

Side Tip: Be sure you are using extreme caution when ironing. Too much stand still in one area will burn the material, so use continual movements. With a quality iron, you should not have to use much pressure. The weight of the iron should be enough to have a pressing effect on the shirt.

❺ Iron the Cuffs Next

Your next step after pressing the collar and shoulders of the shirt is to iron the cuffs. Use the same application as you did with the collar. Lay the sleeve flat, with the buttons facing up. Then iron the inside of the cuff, followed by the outside.

❻ Iron the Sleeves

Once your collar, cuffs, and shoulders are ironed, you will need to press the sleeves. Lay one sleeve flat, buttons up, and begin ironing from the shoulder to the cuff. Repeat on the other side of this sleeve, and then repeat on both sides of the other sleeve.

❼ Iron the Front and Back

Your last step in the dress shirt ironing process is to iron the front side and the back side of the shirt. Lay on layer of your shirt flat, draping over the side of your ironing board. Using soft and continual movements, iron the front panel of the shirt, using extra caution between the buttons, then do the other front panel on the other side of the shirt. With the front sides done, you can flip your shirt over and finish by pressing the back.

These steps will ensure that you achieve the ironing results you are after when it comes to your dressy clothes. But, if you happen to make a mistake and say, burn a hole in your favorite shirt, there might be a solution. Contact an Indianapolis alterations shop to inquire about clothing repair service.

Corduroy Sewing 101

Corduroy is a classic garment fabric that has paved its way through mainstream fashion history. Because it is a sturdy but luxurious material that can be applied universally across the garment board, corduroy always seems to make a comeback. Currently, you can find corduroy apparel in all your favorite clothing stores, from pants and jackets to dresses, skirts, vests, coats, suits, and even accessories like hats and purses.

With so much corduroy going around, you may be tempted to indulge in a little wardrobe upgrade yourself. However, not all corduroy is a perfect fit, and as an important investment, you will want to make sure it stands the test of time. So, it is wise to be prepared to make some minor alterations or periodic repairs to your garment as needed.

Continue reading to learn some top advice on how to sew with corduroy, as well as where to get trusted and affordable tailoring services for corduroy fittings and repairs in Indianapolis.

How to Sew With Corduroy

Corduroy is a cotton-based fabric that is sometimes blended with polyester. Due to its textile makeup, corduroy is proven to be a material worthy of several clothing applications. Not only is corduroy fashionable, but it is also durable and incredibly warm. From the catwalk to the arid paths of the Sedona, corduroy will serve you well depending on how you wear it and why you need it.

But when mishaps occur, you may need to sew your corduroy up alter it to better fit you. Use these tips to help you understand how to sew with corduroy:

Cut Straight Along the Ribs

It is important to put a lot of focus on keeping the corduroy ribs (wales) straight when you are cutting them. You want the pattern grain line arrows to be perfectly parallel to the ribs. To ensure better precision, cut corduroy with the ribs side facing up. When you can see the ribs, it is easier to ensure you are cutting parallel along the grain line.

Sew Parallel to the Fabric Wales

In addition to keeping the ribs straight when you cut corduroy, it is equally important to keep the fabric wales straight when you are sewing corduroy. Making the mistake of sewing even slightly off-grain will result in an obvious garment irregularity that will be blatant to even the most untrained eye.

Try Not to Squash the Corduroy

Corduroy has ribs, or fabric wales, which are the valleys on the fabric. Corduroy also has piles, which are the peaks of the fabric. When sewing corduroy, it is important to avoid squishing the raised piles because it can cause permanent damage to the fabric and make it more difficult to attain your alteration objectives. If you are using a sewing machine, you can avoid squishing the piles by lowering the presser foot, lowering the thread tension, or both.

Take Care When Ironing and Laundering

Corduroy is a specialty fabric that requires a separate level of care when it comes to pressing and cleaning. Try not to press too hard when you are ironing corduroy, as it can damage the piles as mentioned before. In fact, it is recommended to steam corduroy if you can. To properly clean corduroy, wash on the delicate cycle and cold water and hang dry. If you must put corduroy in the dryer, tumble dry on low for shorter time as possible.

How to Reattach Iron-On Letters and Appliques

If you’ve been a high school graduate for a couple of decades, it is safe to say that all of your old and cherished sweatshirts are fitted with those era-evident, iron-on letters and appliqués. From sportsmen jackets and volleyball team sweatshirts to cheerleading uniforms, marching band blazers, and more, the variety of garments used for iron-on lettering is endless. Even modern-day clothing has them, especially children’s’ apparel. Regardless of which garment you have with pressed-on letters, it is frustrating when they begin to peel off or come detached. Fortunately, there is a way to fix this.

Continue reading to learn how to reattach iron-on letters and appliqués with a few simple steps and materials, and an emergency fail-safe approach if nothing seems to work for you.

What You Will Need to Reattach Pressed-On Letters

The type of supplies you will need to reattach ironed-on letters and appliqués will include both tools and materials. Here’s a go-to list that can be found in the local department or craft store:

☑ Sewing Machine
☑ Iron
☑ Ironing Board
☑ Scissors
☑ Paper-Backed Fusible Web (Lightweight)
☑ Matching Thread
☑ Parchment Paper

How to Fix Iron-On Letters

Getting started is simple. First gather all of your supplies and be sure they are within grasp, then turn on your iron recording to the fusible webs manufacturer’s instructions.

Your next step will be to apply your fusible web. It is important to use a lightweight fusible web. If you use fusible web that is too heavy, your garment will be very stiff.

Lay out your parchment paper on the ironing board. Then place your garment or detached letters right-side down on the parchment paper.

Now using your scissors and fusible web, trace around the letters or appliqués that are to be reattached as best you can. The fusible web cutouts should be just a bit larger.

Next, place the fusible web on top of the lettering or appliqués that are being reattached, rough side down.

Then iron over the fusible web until the backing is adhered to the items being reattached.

Once the letters or appliqués have cooled completely, cut away any excess fusible web around the letters or appliqué.

Reapplication Instructions for Ironed-On Letters and Appliqués

Your next stage of the project is to apply the lettering or appliqués back onto the garment. To begin, lay the garment out on your ironing board as flat as possible.

Then arrange the lettering or appliqués in place as they were originally designed on the garment.

Next, use a piece of parchment paper or clean rag to press on top of the lettering to ensure they have a solid connection to the garment. Be careful not to move any of your items out of place when you do this.

With the parchment paper on top of the letters or appliqués, use your iron to press them down carefully.

Lastly, allow the items to cool before moving it again. And you are done!

Pro Tip #1: Although the fusible web should do the trick, you can further secure your letters or appliqués in place if you sew them to the garment. This is where your sewing machine will come in handy. Just be sure to keep the stitching even on all edges to prevent the unappealing curling effect.

Pro Tip #2: Take good care when washing your embellished garments. Turn it inside out and wash on delicate cycle in cold water. Tumble dry low or lay flat to dry. If you choose to iron, use a very low setting.

Have you had a little bit of trouble reattaching the lettering or appliqués to your favorite garment? If so, contact Yong’s Alterations for superior clothing repair services in Indianapolis, Indiana at the most competitive prices in town. We can usually offer same day service!

Sewing Safety for Beginners

Sewing is an excellent and entertaining hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. However, when you are first starting out, it is important to instill some fundamental safety rules in order to prevent sewing injuries. Things like seam rippers, fabric cutters, scissors, needles, and Rotary cutting equipment can all cause severe injuries and even amputations! So, just as we learn the safe way to handle and use scissors as a child, you will learn these same values in terms of sewing, as well as a few other interesting tips that can save you time, money, or a huge hassle.

Continue reading to learn some helpful tips and tricks for safe sewing if you are just starting out as a beginner, and where you can get help with your sewing projects that leave you stuck.

Use Thimbles and Cut-Resistant Gloves

There are several sewing apparatuses that can hurt our fingers and skin, like needles, pins, seam rippers, rotary cutters, and more. Using certain sewing tools can significantly reduce the number of Band-Aids you peel through after a sewing project. Tools like thimbles are classic, yet effective in protecting fingertips from needle points and razor cuts. In fact, thimbles were among the very first sewing tools invented. Modern sewing gear that is effective at protecting fingers and skin are sewing safety gloves. They are relatively inexpensive and the perfect tool for kids and beginner seamstresses.

Fundamental Guidelines for Sewing Safety

Aside from protective tools and apparatuses, there are certain guidelines to follow in order to remain safe while sewing. For example, it is important to never aim a seam ripper at yourself or another person. Always aim the point away from the body and do not place your hands in its way. Also, avoid poking your skin with pins. Although mild in pain, pinpoint cuts can bleed all over your garment without you realizing it, or worse, become infected.

Mind Your Rotary Cutting Equipment

Rotary cutting equipment is sharp, and can easily slice through, or slice off, a finger or piece of skin. It is important to always SLOW DOWN and take your time when using rotary rulers and cutters. Be sure to line the ruler up and then stop, keeping your fingers and hands out of its path. Also, many styles of rotary blades automatically retract, but many also do not. This means to never expect your rotary blades to automatically retract. Always be sire the blade is covered and locked before placing it down or putting it away.

Furniture Can Get Damaged From Sewing Activities Too

Although fingers and hands are important to protect, so is your furniture! Just like your skin and extremities, furniture can also be damaged by sewing tools and techniques. For example, when cutting fabric, it is always important to lay down a protective barrier on top of the surface you intend to use for a platform. Dining room tables, countertops, and more can be significantly damaged by cutters, seam rippers, and more. This leads to unsightly marks and nicks, as well as costly repairs and replacements. Try using a thick, folding cardboard poster as a liner for tables and countertops. It is thick enough to protect and easy to store.

What Does a Tailor Do at an Alterations Shop?

An alterations tailor is a professional seamstress that customizes or alters clothing, apparel, and other existing fabrics or garments. Alterations tailors are commonly employed by large-scale department stores, clothiers, or they operate their own private business. What You Can Expect From Professional Tailoring Services

Tailors Work With Virtually All Garments and Fabrics

There is no end to the types of fabrics and clothing an alterations tailor will fix. They accept old clothing, costumes, new clothing, barely-worn clothing, wedding attire, suits, curtains, and more. These alterations can range in level of difficulty, from simple to highly complex. This is why there is no definite price or cost associated with tailoring services. It is all dependent on the amount of time, labor, and materials needed to complete the task.

Tailors Prefer to Have Client Fittings for Best Results

Most alteration specialists prefer to have their client present for measurement and assessment purposes. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. When a person cannot be present for a fitting, the alterations can be much more difficult to complete. In the case that a client cannot come in for an appointment, the tailor will simply receive the article of clothing with a tag on it, explain the alteration instructions. This is not the best case scenario for customer or tailor. Measuring the progress of a custom fitting or alteration is vital for a perfect fit or repair.

Tailors are Exceptionally Good at Clothing Repair

The most prevalent requests at an alterations shop are clothing repairs. Issues like ripped or torn clothing, stretched collars and sleeves, lapels, pockets, hemlines, and more are the most common alterations for clothing. They can even mend rugs, curtains, tablecloths, and various other fabric home décor!

They are Also the Best for Formal Clothing Alterations

As for formal wear, wedding dress alterations is by far the most popular. Almost every bride requires Indianapolis wedding dress tailoring to get that perfect fit. The same goes for bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos. Tailors are also adept at all other types of formal wear alterations, such as business suits, evening gowns, recital outfits, costumes, and more.

Tailors Need Time to Get it Just Right

Alteration shops really encourage clients to bring their garments in for modifications and repairs as early as possible to ensure they are ready by the desired date or occasion. Once in the hands of the tailor, the amount of time it takes for the alteration to be finished depends on a variety of factors, including the number of fittings needed, size of the garment, complexity of the alteration, and more. Well-established alterations shops can often provide same-day alterations and rush alterations upon request.

Top 4 Reasons for Sewing Basting Stitches

As a sewer, you may be asking yourself, “Why baste?” If so, you are asking the right question. Basting is important in many types of sewing projects, and quite helpful for various applications. Continue reading to learn the top four reasons why you should sew basting stitches, and what to do if you need help with your needlework.

Indianapolis Alterations and Sewing Repairs 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Alterations and Sewing Repairs 317-845-9077

Basting is the method of sewing long, easily-removable stitches into two pieces of fabric, and can be done by machine or by hand. It is intended to temporarily connect two pieces of fabric together for the purpose of fulfilling an overall sewing need. The umbrella reason for basting is to save time. Basting does this in many ways, but mostly, by providing ease and convenience. It is worth your time to baste if you find yourself in certain sewing situations.

Here’s 4 reasons why professionals recommend sewing basting stitches:

Test the Fitting

Basting on seams lets you test the fitting (i.e. side seams) or placement (i.e. darts) before making any semi-permanent stitching decisions. It avoids the scenario of having to remove stitches that you later decide are not in the right place, which can jeopardize the structural integrity of the fabric fibers.

Secure Slippery Fabrics

If you are stitching with silk, satin, or something equally slick, basting is highly beneficial. Basting will let you attach to pieces of slippery fabric together while you work at sewing in permanent stitches. Basting will also make it much easier to take out stitches if the fabric pieces do happen to move while you work.

Create Temporary Stitching

Sewing in basting stitches lets you create provisional stitching while you work at sewing in regular seams or accessories. This works well when adding in things like zippers or appliques. It is a great method for making real-time alterations too, such as dress fittings and costume designs.

Make Two Layers of Fabric into One

When working with multiple pieces of fabric that must be held together as one, basting is the perfect course of action to take. It lets you secure two pieces of fabric together as if they were just one solid piece, thus allowing you to make even and balanced fittings, such as adding layers of chiffon to a skirt or folds in curtain valances. They are easily removable too, which lets you eliminate unnecessary bulk.

Need Help With Your Needlework?

If you have found yourself stuck on a project, whether you have hit a roadblock or reached dead end, you have some options to get you back on track. Contact a local and trusted Indianapolis alterations specialist for professional sewing repairs and corrections. They can give you the right advice, and make the proper modifications to correct your project or piece.

Tips for Balancing Tensions on Sewing Machines

Whether you are just starting out, or you are an accomplished sewer, learning to control and balance tensions on a sewing machine is an integral part of the skill. Proper tension balancing delivers a perfect stitch, as well as, the capacity to adjust tensions for different types of fabrics and materials. Although it requires years of practice, experience, and trial and error, eventually you will get tension balancing just right. In the meantime, it is always helpful to review tips and tricks for balancing tensions on a sewing machine. Continue reading to do just that!

Sewing Machines and Tension Balancing

In order to learn how to properly balance tensions on a sewing machine, you must have general sewing machine knowledge and be able to locate and utilize their features; like the bobbin and bobbin case, bobbin tension screw, upper tension assembly, presser foot lever, presser foot, stitch length and width dials, needle plate, and so on.

Before balancing the tensions, it is best to first start with some standard preparations and a few tricks of the trade. For example, be sure to use a light-colored thread shade on top and for the bobbin. It is recommended to always use high quality mercerized threads. Next, insert a brand new needle. Many people choose to use a size 14, but use whichever size you are most comfortable with, or the size the alteration calls for. Do this while keeping the needle bar in the up-position. Go forward by threading the machine and the bobbin case. Then finish by bringing the bobbin thread upwards and through the needle plate as if you are preparing to sew.

Now, set your sewing machine to its widest and longest stitch settings it allows; for straight stitch machines, set it at the longest basting stitch. Upper tensions should be between 3 and 5 for older setups; while newer machines should be set to auto.

First Step

The bottom thread tension should easily pull out of the bobbin, and slide smoothly from the needle plate opening. You can check this by using your hands to feel for smooth and easy accessibility. Although it takes practice and experience to know what proper tension feels like, you at least get the idea of what to check for.

Second Step

Go ahead and place a tester material underneath the presser foot. Try to use a dark colored fabric and fold it in half. Use this to test the stitch quality by sewing one length. Longer test fabrics allow more room for stitch testing.

Third Step

Once you have tested the stitch, inspect the finished stitch quality. If there seems to be some stitches that are skipped or abnormal, then you probably need to repair your machine. It is not a tension balancing issue at this point. If the stitch is pulling off, or the knot is showing, then your tensions are too loose. Tighten bobbin cases in 1/8 increments for accurate adjustments. Once the knot is no longer visible, then your tensions are well-balanced.
