Factors That Impact the Timeline for an Alteration

On average, a professional Indianapolis tailor will need approximately 1-2 weeks to complete an alteration or hemming job. Depending on the complexity of the project, however, this timeline can vary. For example, if you’re having a complex garment – such as a wedding dress or suit – altered, it could take up to 4 weeks for the project to be completed.

The other factor that affects turnaround times is the tailor’s workload. If your tailor is especially busy, then they may need extra time to complete your project. In this case, you can always ask your tailor when they expect to be done with the job and plan accordingly.

Finally, it goes without saying that the quality of a professional alteration is far greater than any other option – so don’t forget to factor in that extra time for perfection into the timeline!

What You Need to Keep in Mind About Tailoring Service

Overall, the average timeline for professional alterations will vary depending on the complexity of the project and your tailor’s workload. On average, however, you can expect a turnaround time of 1-2 weeks – though this may be longer for complex garments. If you need your garments back sooner than that, make sure to discuss it with your tailor in Indianapolis accordingly. With these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to get perfectly tailored clothes in no time!

FAQS About Clothing Care

Which Tools Should I Have in a Sewing Kit?

You can purchase prepackaged sewing kits that come with a wide array of sewing supplies and materials. But sometimes, customizing your own kit is more cost efficient. To make your own sewing kit, start with the basics, such as a selection of needles, thread, pin cushion, ribbon ruler, scissors, finger presser, seam ripper, fabric marking pen, and stitch markers.

How Do I Make Homemade Fabric Softener?

Not only is homemade fabric softener an Eco-friendly alternative to the chemicals used in commercial products, but it is also more cost-effective too. See our blog, “Instructions for Homemade Fabric Softener” for step-by-step instructions!

Can I Remove Sweat Stains From the Pits of My Shirt?

One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pre-treat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout® Triple Enzyme Formula Laundry Stain Remover Spray, both available on Amazon.com for under $10. Simply pre-treat the affected area, and then launder as usual. You can also make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

How Do I Fix a Snagged Thread in My Sweater?

You never want to cut a snagged thread because it will only make it unravel further and cause more damage. Instead, follow these instructions for the best results:

Thread your needle. And you don’t even have to knot it at the end. Insert your needle and thread through the loop of the snag and pull it through until the end of the thread is close to the snag. Then tie a knot to the loop of the snag.

Using your scissors, cut off any excess thread that hangs after the knot. Insert the needle at the base of the snag loop. Be sure to get as close to the base as possible to blend it in with the rest of the fabric.

Then pull the needle through the fabric, and out through the inside of the garment. The snag should disappear on the outside! From here, you can either untie the knot in the thread, or you can just trim the thread with your scissors.

Can I Get Ink Out of Leather?

Leather is a delicate, luxury fabric that requires a higher degree of care and attention. Finding ink stains on such investment pieces can be quite devastating, especially considering the price tag. The best thing you can do when it comes to ink on leather is act fast. As soon as you discover an ink stain, begin the steps to remove it, promptly. See our blog, “How to Get Ink Out of Leather” for step-by-step instructions!

Here are options for pet hair removal from clothing and fabrics: Velcro Hair Rollers, rubber Cleaning Gloves, Fabric Softener Sheets, Tennis Balls, Rubber Broom, Balloons, Kitchen Sponges, and Pumice Stones.

How Do I Choose the Right Shapewear?

Choose the proper shapewear for your body and garment by staying in your correct size range (do not go down a size for a tighter fit), narrowing down the shape you are looking for (full body transformation, lower body, upper body, etc.), and choosing the right material for the season. In the warmer seasons, opt for a cotton or cotton-blend material to keep you cool. Avoid nylons, spandex, and synthetic blends.

Tips for Eliminating Clothing Odors

Does your laundry still retain odors even they are washed and dried? Do you have little leaguers and sporting athletes in your home who sweat through their jerseys and team uniforms faster than you can gather them up and toss them in the washer?

Does your spouse’s fitness apparel still smell like the gym even after being thoroughly laundered? Do you sometimes regret wearing your favorite blouse to your favorite exotic cuisine restaurant? Does your dog’s blanket refuse to lose its signature smell?

All of these smelly clothes problems can be solved with the right approach to clothing and laundry care. Here are six effective methods for eliminating wardrobe and laundry odors:

Don’t Let Laundry Sit Around

One of the worst things you can do is let your laundry sit in piles for long periods of time, especially or kept in the dark. The longer clothing remains dirty, the more odors will set into the fabrics. Basically, dirty laundry only gets dirtier, and therefore smellier. Be sure to wash your dirty laundry right away, or soon as possible.

Pre-Treat Extra Dirty Clothes

For clothing that sees the highest amount of dirt and odor, pretreating is the best odor prevention method. Not only should you pretreat extra smelly clothing in a detergent soak, but you should also run them through a rinse cycle before running a real wash cycle.

Incorporate an Odor Shield Product

If your clothes smell after being washed and dried, try incorporating an odor shield product. These products are specially formulated to eliminate existing odors and prevent the absorption of new ones after a wash. A popular odor shield laundry product is Gain Flings or Downy Scent Beads. You can also make your own using essential oils and a laundry ball.

Learn How to Do Laundry Correctly

When it comes to using a washer and dryer, it is important that you know what you’re doing. The better you know how to do laundry, the better your results will be. If you’re dealing with stinky or smelly clothes, even after they have been washed, you may want to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on your detergents and the washing machine itself.

Keep Your Appliances Clean

In order to get the best results of your laundry, it is important to keep your washing machine and dryer in good condition. Not only should you routinely clean out the dryer vents and filters, but you should also clean the inside of your washing machine basin. There are washing machine cleaning tablets on the market. You can purchase washing machine sanitizing products, such as AFFRESH tablets, that will clean the inside of your washing machine in just one cycle.

Odor Treat Barely-Worn Garments

You can extend the life of your garments in between washes by odor treating them with high quality fabrics sanitizer products. You can reduce or get rid of odors caused by restaurants, cooking, smoke, outdoor exposure, and more with fabric odor eliminators like Lysol Fabric Sanitizer, Febreeze spray, and similar products.

Prevent Stretching Out Your Clothes With These Tips

It is not a good feeling to pull an outfit from the closet or empty the washing machine, only to find your favorite sweater or leggings stretched out beyond the ability to be worn again. You spend your hard-earned paychecks on your wardrobe, so it is only natural to want to extend the life of your clothing for as long as possible. Although you want to stretch out their lifespan, you certainly don’t want to stretch out their fabrics.

Use these tips below to prevent stretching out your clothes during the wash and after, plus learn some additional tips on how to repair a stretched out garment.

How to Stop Your Clothes From Getting Stretched During and After Washing

Always Check the Care Instructions

Before putting anything in the washing machine, it is important to always check the clothing tag for manufacturer care instructions. The tag should give you instructions on what temperature to wash the clothes in, whether to machine wash, hand wash, or dry clean, and how to dry and press the garment. You would never want to machine wash a blouse that is instructed to be dry cleaned, nor use a hot iron on a silk scarf that’s meant for a cooler press. Ignoring the care instructions on clothing tag can be significantly detrimental to the overall integrity and quality of your garment.

Use a Quality Fabric Conditioner

Whether your clothes are standard laundry or delicate pieces, it is important to always incorporate a quality fabric conditioner or fabric softener into the wash. Of course, this does not apply to clothing and garments recommended for dry cleaning, or pieces with care instructions that specifically warn against the use of a fabric softener. You will come across this from time to time. Fabric conditioners promote more of a fluid consistency within the fabric during the wash cycle. Not only does this prevent your clothes from stretching, but it can also be used to repair a stretched out garment.

Air Dry Delicate Garments

Not all clothes are meant for the dryer. Not only can a dryer stretch out clothing, but it can also fade, warp, and shrink garments. Even if the care tag permits tumble drawing the garment on low, it is best to air dry the most delicate pieces in your wardrobe. Some pieces are perfectly compatible with rack air drying, while others should be laid flat on a laundry screen. Garments like knitted sweaters can stretch out on a laundry rack. It is recommended to allow 12 to 24 hours for full air dried results.

Swap Out Your Hangers

If your hangers do not fit your clothing properly, they can stretch out all of your favorite pieces. You may need to swap out your hangers for some new ones that are more compatible with your delicate or stretchable clothes. Additionally, you may want to take some clothing off your hangers and fold them instead. Garments like heavily knit sweaters can easily stretch out on a hanger.

Fasten All Buttons and Snaps

When hanging up your delicate or stretchable pieces of clothing, it is important to fasten up all of the buttons and snaps on the garment. This helps the item of clothing keep its shape through every wash. Additionally, when you are ready to take an item of clothing out of your closet, be sure to undo the buttons, snaps, and zipper before removing it from the hanger. This is another way clothes get stretched out.

Are you wondering how to repair an item of clothing that has stretched out in the washer or on the hanger? How to Cover a Clothing Rip With a Patch

Patch Sewing 101

The great thing about patch sewing is that even a beginner can do it. In fact, it makes a great activity for you and your children to do together. Keep in mind, embroidered clothing patches aren’t just for repairs, they are also great for adding some flare to any garment or accessory! Apply patches to anything upholstered, including shirts, blouses, sweaters, sweatshirts, blazers, jackets, jeans, trousers, shorts, coats, costumes, uniforms, backpacks, purses, tote bags, suitcases, hats, scarves, and much more!

Selecting a Patch

When it comes to choosing a clothing patch, you will find a vast selection of options. Select one that represents your style, but also matches the garment you plan to repair. From rainbows and peace signs to sunsets, surfboards, flowers, animals, stars, sports logos, and more, you will surely find a clothing patch that meets these needs and speaks to your character.

Patch Application

As for application, you will need to decide between sewing and ironing. Some patches are designed to be ironed on, while others are designed to be sewn on by hand. Both techniques work well, even if you are a beginner.

If you plan to purchase an iron-on patch, be sure you have access to both an iron and ironing board. If you don’t have an ironing board, you can use a heavy-duty, folded towel. Most people prefer to sew on iron-on patches because they tend to come off in the wash. Iron-on patches come with written instructions, which basically involve pressing the patch onto the surface of the garment with a medium-hot iron. It’s easy!

If you plan to go the sewing route, be sure you have the proper sewing thread, thread color, and needle. You can use a similar color thread or a contrasting color. You will also need sewing pins and a pair of scissors.

To Sew on a Patch

If you prefer a sew-on patch, consider using sewing thread for jeans, embroidery, or hand-quilting because they offer added durability. Polyester and cotton threads will work, but they are weaker and prone to breakage.

To begin, lay your garment flat and clear the surface around the tear. Clean up the fraying around the inner edge of the rip by cutting down the loose exposed threads.

Lay your patch on top of the area you wish to apply it, in this case over the rip, then pin it in place. Try to only use 2 or 3 pins. Once it is pinned, begin preparing your needle and thread. Bonus tip: double up on your thread.

Now begin sewing around the outer perimeter of the patch. Insert the needle fabric-first, pushing upwards into the patch. This way, the knot at the end of your thread is not visible.  If you run out of thread before completing your loop, just restart as usual.

Is the damage to your garment to large or complex to cover with a patch? Contact Yong’s Alterations at 317-845-9077 for professional sewing and alteration services in Indianapolis, Indiana. We work with curtains, rugs, drapery, upholstery, and of course, clothing!

The Importance of Using Quality Thread in a Sewing Machine

If you have been having problems with your sewing machine, the first troubleshooting method is to swap out the needle for a new one. If that doesn’t work, your sewing thread could be the issue. Good quality sewing thread is one of the most important elements of any successful sewing or clothing alteration project.

Continue below to learn more about the importance of using high quality threat in a sewing machine, plus what to do if you cannot seem to get your stitches right.

Quality Thread is Essential for Sewing Machine Work

Just like many other products out there, you cannot sacrifice thread quality without noticing it at some point in time. Sure, you can save a few bucks by opting for that cheaper thread, but your project will suffer certain aesthetic and structural deficiencies. Plus, low quality thread is often incompatible with sewing machine work, as it can lose tension and snap while running through all the tension disks and eye openings within the machine. It can even cause your machine to suffer long-term or irreversible damages, especially to the disks.

So, what makes a good quality sewing machine thread? Well, there are many attributes to look for in a dependable, top-grade thread, and a high price tag is not one of them.

How to Choose a Good Sewing Machine Thread

When shopping around for a sewing machine thread that works well, is compatible with your sewing machine, and will render great results, you want to look for fewer loose fibers and less fraying tendencies. Loosely-wound threads with many stray fibers do not perform well in sewing machines. Choose a thread that is more tightly wound and has few stray fibers. Here is a guide you can take to the store:

Loosely-Wound with Stray Fibers:

► Coats And Clark Dual Duty All-Purpose Thread
► Excell 100% Polyester
► Lucky Strike 100% Cotton Thread
► Talon Superlock 100% Spun Polyester
► Trusew 100% Spun Polyester

Recommended Sewing Machine Thread:

► Coats and Clark 100% Cotton Thread
► Guttermann 100% Polyester Thread
► Mettler Metrosene Plus 100% Polyester
► Mettler’s Silk Finish 100% Mercerized Cotton
► Molnlycke 100% Polyester Thread

What to Do if You Spill Paint on Your Clothes

Whether you were suddenly inspired to change the color of your dining room walls or hosting a playful afternoon of finger art with the kids, paint seems to always get on clothing no matter how hard you try to prevent it from happening. Fortunately, there are some handy tricks to removing paint from clothes; and the best part is, they won’t jeopardize the integrity of your fabrics.

So, before tossing out your kid’s favorite jersey or your most comfortable pair of jeans, continue reading and learn some methods of getting paint off clothes instead!

Indianapolis IN Clothing Repairs 317-845-9077
Indianapolis IN Clothing Repairs 317-845-9077

The Materials You Will Need to Remove Paint on Clothing

The supplies you will need for the job will depend specifically on the type of paint you have on your article of clothing. You’ll require different materials for latex, oil, and acrylic paints. So, that means that the first step to removing paint from your clothes is to find out which type of paint it is. Once you know that, you can move onto the actual cleaning process.

☐ Paint Thinner (or turpentine)
☐ Nail Polish Remover
☐ Rubbing Alcohol
☐ Liquid Detergent
☐ Liquid Dish Soap
☐ Disposable Plastic Container
☐ Toothbrush
☐ Clean Sponge
☐ Clean Rags
☐ Spoon
☐ Butter Knife
☐ Cotton Balls
☐ Paper Towels
☐ Duct Tape

How to Remove Oil and Acrylic Paint From Clothing

Step 1 – Place paper towel down to use as a foundation for your garment.

Step 2 – Whether the paint is wet or dry, scoop the excess off with a butter knife. Then turn your garment inside out and repeat.

Step 3 – Pour a cup or two of paint thinner into a disposable plastic container, like an empty ice cream tub. Then soak some cotton balls in it.

Step 4 – With the garment inside out, use the soaked cotton balls to gently dab the soiled area. As you pick up paint, continue to switch cotton balls. If the stain is proving to be difficult to remove, try pouring paint thinner directly over it and use a toothbrush to scrub. Just be sure you have a clean, dry foundation underneath.

Step 5 – Blot the freshly treated area dry with clean paper towels to remove excess paint thinner. Then blot the area with some liquid laundry detergent.

Step 6 – Wash the garment in the laundry as usual.

How to Remove Latex Paint From Clothes

Step 1 – Place paper towels and clean rags down to use as a foundation for your article of clothing, even if it’s completely dry. This prevents paint from transferring through the fibers and onto whatever is beneath it.

Step 2 – If there is still wet paint on your clothing, use your butter knife and spoon to scrap it off.

Step 3 – Run your article of clothing under warm water and then blot it dry using a paper towel or dry rag. If you are wearing your article of clothing and it is too saturated with paint, continue rinsing the best you can until you can take it off.

Step 4 – Turn the article of clothing inside out and rinse it thoroughly under warm water.

Step 5 – If your garment is color-safe, use liquid dish soap for this step. If it is not, use liquid laundry detergent instead. Apply the soap directly to the affected area and use a clean sponge or white cloth to work up a generous lather. Be sure to continue rotating rag or sponge to avoid cleaning with a soiled section.

Step 6 – Repeat step 6 as often as you need until you feel like you’ve cleansed away most of the paint. Then launder as usual and allow to air dry.

Step 7 – Once the garment is entirely dry, check the level of paint residue. If there is still paint evident, use your butter knife to scrape off the remaining paint, or apply duct tape firmly over it and peel away. Repeat this a few times, and then repeat all steps all over again.

Side Note: At this point, you can also use an old toothbrush and a small amount of nail polish remover to get paint off your clothing but be careful as it might discolor non-color safe fabrics.

Fabric Care Tips for Polyester Clothing

Polyester is a popular synthetic material used to make clothing and apparel, as well as curtains, upholstered items, and a variety of home décor commodities. When it comes to taking care of polyester, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Polyester is a strong and durable fabric, but also impressionable. For this reason, it requires a different set of rules compared to cottons and similar conventional materials, namely when it comes to storing, laundering, and pressing.

Continue below to review the top fabric care tips for polyester clothing and textiles, and where you can find top-rated clothing repair service in Indianapolis.

Polyester Fabric Care 101

With a little extra knowledge and effort, you can keep your polyester clothes, garments, and household items looking as new as the day you brought them home. Whether your favorite Fall jacket, the dining room curtains, a cozy blanket, or some old cushion covers, you can keep polyester fabric looking fresh and luxurious with some helpful tips.

Always Read the Manufacturer Instructions

The majority of your polyester fabrics will come with a manufacturer tag that contains laundry instructions specifically for that garment. Be sure to always check these laundry and cleaning instructions before attempting to remove the stain or machine wash your polyester. You see, not all polyester garments are 100% polyester. Many are composed with the textiles such as linen, nylon, and silk. For this reason, one polyester item may require a different set of laundering instructions than another. If the tag says, “dry clean only”, do not machine wash it under any circumstances. Only have it cleaned through a professional dry cleaning service.

Take Extra Time to Pretreat Stains on Polyester

For polyester fabrics and garments that do not require dry cleaning service, take the extra time to pretreat stains and spots prior to laundering. Whether you are washing by hand or using a washing machine, pretreating polyester stains can help maintain the structural integrity of the fabrics while also eliminating the blemish. Pre-treating stains is especially important with polyester fabrics because polyester is not necessarily a leader in the stain resistance department.

Simply use top-quality stain remover product, which you can purchase at any local department or grocery store, and allow the product to sit for at least 15 minutes before washing. If you are pretreating white polyester fabric, consider a pre-soak. But do not use chlorine bleach. Instead, combine warm water with oxygenated bleach. Pre-soak your white polyester fabrics for at least two hours before laundering.

Machine Wash Polyester on the Right Temperature and Cycle Setting

Like with any other load of laundry, it is important to wash polyester on the correct temperature setting and washing machine cycle. The temperature and cycle setting you choose will depend on the type of polyester fabric garment you are washing. Finer or fragile polyester items will need to be cleaned on the delicate cycle using cold or warm water, although cold is recommended. Hot water can break down the fibers of polyester and cause premature fading and fabric damage. Stronger polyester fabrics can be washed in the machine on normal setting with warm or cold water.

Dry Polyester Items Properly After Laundering

The universal recommendation for drying polyester clothing and household items after washing them is to tumble dry them on low in the machine. However, it is wise to consider handwriting polyester so that the shape of the item can remain intact and you don’t have to iron as much.

Use the Appropriate Iron Settings When Pressing Polyester

Just like washing and drying polyester, it is important to use the proper settings when ironing or pressing your garments. Delicate polyester items can be damaged quickly by an iron that is too hot, or even by steam that is too strong. An iron that is not set high enough may not have any pressing effect on a thick or durable polyester item, such as curtains or a blanket. Always refer back to the manufacturer’s instructions on the tag to read instructions for ironing.

What Does a Tailor Do at an Alterations Shop?

An alterations tailor is a professional seamstress that customizes or alters clothing, apparel, and other existing fabrics or garments. They are different from standard tailors because they do not typically create and fabricate clothing or apparel; instead, they alter or service existing pieces. Alterations tailors are commonly employed by large-scale department stores, clothiers, or they operate their own private business. Professional alteration specialists can alter or fix clothing, apparel, home décor, fabrics, and more. They perform these duties for men, women, adolescents, children, infants, and more.

What You Can Expect From Professional Tailoring Services

Tailors Work With Virtually All Garments and Fabrics

There is no end to the types of fabrics and clothing an alterations tailor will fix. They accept old clothing, costumes, new clothing, barely-worn clothing, wedding attire, suits, curtains, and more. These alterations can range in level of difficulty, from simple to highly complex. This is why there is no definite price or cost associated with tailoring services. It is all dependent on the amount of time, labor, and materials needed to complete the task.

Tailors Prefer to Have Client Fittings for Best Results

Most alteration specialists prefer to have their client present for measurement and assessment purposes. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. When a person cannot be present for a fitting, the alterations can be much more difficult to complete. In the case that a client cannot come in for an appointment, the tailor will simply receive the article of clothing with a tag on it, explain the alteration instructions. This is not the best case scenario for customer or tailor. Measuring the progress of a custom fitting or alteration is vital for a perfect fit or repair.

Tailors are Exceptionally Good at Clothing Repair

The most prevalent requests at an alterations shop are clothing repairs. Issues like ripped or torn clothing, stretched collars and sleeves, lapels, pockets, hemlines, and more are the most common alterations for clothing. They can even mend rugs, curtains, tablecloths, and various other fabric home décor!

They are Also the Best for Formal Clothing Alterations

As for formal wear, wedding dress alterations is by far the most popular. Almost every bride requires Indianapolis wedding dress tailoring to get that perfect fit. The same goes for bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos. Tailors are also adept at all other types of formal wear alterations, such as business suits, evening gowns, recital outfits, costumes, and more.

Tailors Need Time to Get it Just Right

Alteration shops really encourage clients to bring their garments in for modifications and repairs as early as possible to ensure they are ready by the desired date or occasion. Once in the hands of the tailor, the amount of time it takes for the alteration to be finished depends on a variety of factors, including the number of fittings needed, size of the garment, complexity of the alteration, and more. Well-established alterations shops can often provide same-day alterations and rush alterations upon request.
