Facts About Ribbon Yarn

There are various types of yarn to choose from at your local craft store, from wool and fleece to cotton, linen, nylon, and rayon. But many knitting hobbyists are unfamiliar with ribbon yarn. Ribbon yarn is your typical yarn, but flat rather than rounded like conventional yarn. Imagine a fettuccine noodle. This is what ribbon yarn sort of looks like! Well, really it looks like a ribbon, hence its name. Do not confuse ribbon yarn with boa yarn or lace fabric, as these types of materials are stitched differently.

Ribbon Yarn PROS

When you are shopping around for ribbon yarn, you will be delighted to find that there are various types to choose from Ribbon yarn, like most other yarn selections, comes in various materials, primarily cotton and rayon, but also nylon, silk, and more.

Additional advantages of using ribbon yarn include its light weight. It’s lightweight makes it easy to work with, saving your arms and shoulders from muscle ache. But once knitted, ribbon yarn provides sufficient warmth and durability.

Ribbon Yarn CONS

Although ribbon yarn comes in a variety of different colors and patterns, it is usually sold in small amounts. Most ribbon yarn is available at 100 yarns per ball, but you may be able to set up a special arrangement with your local craft shop for larger or bulk orders.

Another common downfall to using ribbon yarn for knitting is its tricky movement. Ribbon yarn, because of its shape, tends to twist and curl as you knit with it, sometimes making it difficult to work with. In fact, most knitted garments look a bit twisty when using ribbon yarn. But this isn’t always a bad thing!

Best Applications for Ribbon Yarn

If you’re intending to show off some delicate in our intricate stitch work, ribbon yarn is not for your project. Also, because ribbon yarn results in a heavily knitted garment, it is not the best material for knitting sweaters. The outcome can be too heavy. If you plan to use wooden knitting needles, be sure the ends are very smooth because they can snag easily on ribbon yarn.

The best applications for ribbon yarn include knitting belts, scarves, head wraps, headbands, bandannas, tote bags, and similar non-essential accessories. Ribbon yard snags easily, so do not use it for a luxury or high-investment piece!

How to Reattach Iron-On Letters and Appliques

If you’ve been a high school graduate for a couple of decades, it is safe to say that all of your old and cherished sweatshirts are fitted with those era-evident, iron-on letters and appliqués. From sportsmen jackets and volleyball team sweatshirts to cheerleading uniforms, marching band blazers, and more, the variety of garments used for iron-on lettering is endless. Even modern-day clothing has them, especially children’s’ apparel. Regardless of which garment you have with pressed-on letters, it is frustrating when they begin to peel off or come detached. Fortunately, there is a way to fix this.

Continue reading to learn how to reattach iron-on letters and appliqués with a few simple steps and materials, and an emergency fail-safe approach if nothing seems to work for you.

What You Will Need to Reattach Pressed-On Letters

The type of supplies you will need to reattach ironed-on letters and appliqués will include both tools and materials. Here’s a go-to list that can be found in the local department or craft store:

☑ Sewing Machine
☑ Iron
☑ Ironing Board
☑ Scissors
☑ Paper-Backed Fusible Web (Lightweight)
☑ Matching Thread
☑ Parchment Paper

How to Fix Iron-On Letters

Getting started is simple. First gather all of your supplies and be sure they are within grasp, then turn on your iron recording to the fusible webs manufacturer’s instructions.

Your next step will be to apply your fusible web. It is important to use a lightweight fusible web. If you use fusible web that is too heavy, your garment will be very stiff.

Lay out your parchment paper on the ironing board. Then place your garment or detached letters right-side down on the parchment paper.

Now using your scissors and fusible web, trace around the letters or appliqués that are to be reattached as best you can. The fusible web cutouts should be just a bit larger.

Next, place the fusible web on top of the lettering or appliqués that are being reattached, rough side down.

Then iron over the fusible web until the backing is adhered to the items being reattached.

Once the letters or appliqués have cooled completely, cut away any excess fusible web around the letters or appliqué.

Reapplication Instructions for Ironed-On Letters and Appliqués

Your next stage of the project is to apply the lettering or appliqués back onto the garment. To begin, lay the garment out on your ironing board as flat as possible.

Then arrange the lettering or appliqués in place as they were originally designed on the garment.

Next, use a piece of parchment paper or clean rag to press on top of the lettering to ensure they have a solid connection to the garment. Be careful not to move any of your items out of place when you do this.

With the parchment paper on top of the letters or appliqués, use your iron to press them down carefully.

Lastly, allow the items to cool before moving it again. And you are done!

Pro Tip #1: Although the fusible web should do the trick, you can further secure your letters or appliqués in place if you sew them to the garment. This is where your sewing machine will come in handy. Just be sure to keep the stitching even on all edges to prevent the unappealing curling effect.

Pro Tip #2: Take good care when washing your embellished garments. Turn it inside out and wash on delicate cycle in cold water. Tumble dry low or lay flat to dry. If you choose to iron, use a very low setting.

Have you had a little bit of trouble reattaching the lettering or appliqués to your favorite garment? If so, contact Yong’s Alterations for superior clothing repair services in Indianapolis, Indiana at the most competitive prices in town. We can usually offer same day service!

3 Reasons Why You Should Air Dry Your Clothes

Do you mindlessly pull out your clothes from the washing machine and instantly toss them into the dryer? If so, you may want to rethink your laundry room routine. Opting for an air drying approach delivers a wide range of benefits that can improve your quality of life and even save you some money. Continue reading to learn the top three reasons why you should air dry your clothing apparel and bedding, and what to do if your clothes or upholstered articles require some repair.

Top Air Drying Benefits

Lessen Energy Consumption

Although you may not realize it, your drying machine utilizes a lot of energy, which in turn increases your utility bills every month. By air drying your textiles, whether that means your clothing, bedding, towels, or upholstered items, you are reducing your energy consumption by a nominal amount. As a result, you actively lower your monthly utility bills and increased your annual savings.

Keep a Proper Fit

Not all of us can have our clothing custom tailored to fit our bodies, which are prone to be ever-changing in size and shape. Drying machines can shrink clothing, warp clothing, stretch out callers, and loosen elastics and fitted sheets and articles of clothing with similar stretchy binding. So, to help keep your clothes from warping out of shape, avoid using the dryer and opt for an air drying approach instead.

Reduce Wear and Tear

It is no secret that using the drying machine over and over again will eventually fade your clothing, promote lint balls, snags, and shedding, and even change the shape and fit. What does this lead to? It leads to you spending even more money on newer clothes so that you can stay looking your best. To save money on premature wardrobe replacement expenses, opt for air drying your clothing instead. This will keep your clothes brilliant and bright and help maintain the integrity of the fabric.

Sewing Safety for Beginners

Sewing is an excellent and entertaining hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. However, when you are first starting out, it is important to instill some fundamental safety rules in order to prevent sewing injuries. Things like seam rippers, fabric cutters, scissors, needles, and Rotary cutting equipment can all cause severe injuries and even amputations! So, just as we learn the safe way to handle and use scissors as a child, you will learn these same values in terms of sewing, as well as a few other interesting tips that can save you time, money, or a huge hassle.

Continue reading to learn some helpful tips and tricks for safe sewing if you are just starting out as a beginner, and where you can get help with your sewing projects that leave you stuck.

Use Thimbles and Cut-Resistant Gloves

There are several sewing apparatuses that can hurt our fingers and skin, like needles, pins, seam rippers, rotary cutters, and more. Using certain sewing tools can significantly reduce the number of Band-Aids you peel through after a sewing project. Tools like thimbles are classic, yet effective in protecting fingertips from needle points and razor cuts. In fact, thimbles were among the very first sewing tools invented. Modern sewing gear that is effective at protecting fingers and skin are sewing safety gloves. They are relatively inexpensive and the perfect tool for kids and beginner seamstresses.

Fundamental Guidelines for Sewing Safety

Aside from protective tools and apparatuses, there are certain guidelines to follow in order to remain safe while sewing. For example, it is important to never aim a seam ripper at yourself or another person. Always aim the point away from the body and do not place your hands in its way. Also, avoid poking your skin with pins. Although mild in pain, pinpoint cuts can bleed all over your garment without you realizing it, or worse, become infected.

Mind Your Rotary Cutting Equipment

Rotary cutting equipment is sharp, and can easily slice through, or slice off, a finger or piece of skin. It is important to always SLOW DOWN and take your time when using rotary rulers and cutters. Be sure to line the ruler up and then stop, keeping your fingers and hands out of its path. Also, many styles of rotary blades automatically retract, but many also do not. This means to never expect your rotary blades to automatically retract. Always be sire the blade is covered and locked before placing it down or putting it away.

Furniture Can Get Damaged From Sewing Activities Too

Although fingers and hands are important to protect, so is your furniture! Just like your skin and extremities, furniture can also be damaged by sewing tools and techniques. For example, when cutting fabric, it is always important to lay down a protective barrier on top of the surface you intend to use for a platform. Dining room tables, countertops, and more can be significantly damaged by cutters, seam rippers, and more. This leads to unsightly marks and nicks, as well as costly repairs and replacements. Try using a thick, folding cardboard poster as a liner for tables and countertops. It is thick enough to protect and easy to store.

4 Types of Common Clothing Stains and How to Remove Them

Does it seem like no matter how hard you try your brand-new blouse or favorite tee-shirt always seems to catch a stain? Well, there are many types of stains that we encounter on a regular basis, but the four most common are arguably paint, grease, sweat, and wine! If you have dealt with clothing stains like these, it is time to learn how to clean them away and never live in fear of spilling your evening Merlot on your best dress ever again.

Get Rid of These 4 Pesky Stains!

Sweat Stains

Whether you have a gym rat in the family, or you suffer from hyperhidrosis, you likely need a remedy for sweat stains on clothing, particularly the armpits. One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pre-treat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout® Triple Enzyme Formula Laundry Stain Remover Spray. Simply pre-treat the affected area, and then launder as usual.

You can also make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Combine equal parts (1/4 cup of each is plenty for one shirt) of water, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. Next, apply it directly to the stained areas, then scrub it in with your scrubbing brush. When thoroughly scrubbed in, rinse clean with water.

Grease Stains

The upside to having a fresh grease stain on your garment is that there is a product on the market that is proven to combat grease, and it’s safe on clothing! Simply reach for the Dawn liquid dish soap to remove grease stains from clothes. Apply a generous amount with your fingers, rub it in, then rinse it away with clean water. You may have to repeat these steps a few times, but the formula in the detergent works well at pulling the grease up and out of clothing fibers.

Paint Stains

Because different paints react to different removal methods, the first step to cleaning paint off of your clothes is finding out which type of paint you are dealing with. For latex paint, use a butter knife to scrap the dry paint off inside and out. Next, run your garment under warm water and then blot it dry using a paper towel. Last, flip it inside out, rinse it again, treat it with liquid detergent, then launder as usual.

For acrylic paint stains, scrape off as much paint as you can, then blot the affected area with paint thinner using a cotton ball or paper towel. Do this inside and out, and then blot it again using liquid detergent. Finish by washing it in the laundry as you usually would.

Red Wine Stains

Spilling or splattering red wine on your clothes can really put a damper on the whole experience of having a glass or two of wine to begin with. But did you know you can easily remove a fresh red wine stain from your clothes using white wine? It’s true! The white wine has the same consistency and density as red wine, so by pouring some white over a red wine spill, you push the red wine up and out of the clothing fibers, making it easier to blot and rinse away.

This method is not recommended for light or white clothing. For garments of these hues, remove red wine by combining Dawn dishwashing soap and hydrogen peroxide, then applying generously over the stain. Let is soak all the way in, and then launder as usually immediately. This usually does the trick!

How to Tell if Your Thread is Expired

Did you know that thread can go bad? It’s true. After some time, thread begins to take on certain attributes that lower the quality of your sewing project results. How can you tell if thread is expired? Continue reading to learn the signs.

Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077
Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077

Top 3 Signs of Bad Thread

Before you throw out any spools of thread, be sure you know which signs to look for that tell you they have lost quality or integrity. The top three signs to look for are dust, light, and humidity.

When dust has settled on a surface, you know right away that it has been some time since it was cleaned. Well, the same circumstance can indicate the quality of a spool of thread. If a spool is particularly dusty, it is likely that the dust has settled deep into the fibers of the thread. As a result, sewing projects can suffer. Furthermore, it can damage your sewing machine since dust gets pulled directly into the tension discs. This will cause the discs to experience negative friction, which will immediately stop your sewing machine from working.

When you open a brand new spool of thread, it is bright and lustrous. But overtime, the dyes within the textiles will slowly evaporate, resulting in faded thread. Thread will fade faster if stored in an area with high light exposure, whether artificial or natural. Light fades thread, but so does time, so theses are two factors to consider when assessing the overall quality of your spools. If you use faded thread in your sewing projects, you can expect a lack-luster finish. Of course, if this is the artistic intention, then faded thread is a good thing! Just keep in mind that thread that has faded from age can also be weaker, which can cause structural integrity problems with your final sewing products.

Humidity, both in excess or lack-there-of, can negatively affect the quality and performance of thread. In areas where the climate is very dry, spools can turn brittle, which creates additional structural issues for a sewing project. In areas where the climate is very humid, spools can actually become sticky, or even develop mold. For these reasons, it is important to store your thread properly if you want to extend their lifespan. If you have humidity control issues in your home or office, you can consider a humidifier, which can help with your indoor air quality.

3 Ways to Control Fraying Fabric

Are you having trouble controlling the fraying in your fabrics as you work with them? Does it seem like the more you stitch, the more the fabric just falls apart? If so, you are not alone. There are many types of fabrics and materials that prove difficult when it comes to sewing. Fortunately, there are some convenient methods to dealing with persistent fabric frays.

Continue reading to learn the top three!

Indianapolis Alterations
Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077

❶ Improve Your Seam Finishes

Seam finishes are the key to controlling fray. Best of all, you can apply a seam finish before you sew, which ensures improved control and less fraying. To do so, simply use the same measurements on the full length of the seam finish.

❷ Try Pinking Shears

Pinking shears are a common tool used to control fabric fraying, but they are not your typical sewing shears. Instead, their blades are designed with jagged edges that create a saw tooth edge in fabric. This type of cutting action helps abate fraying by reducing a blunt edge.

❸ Invest in Sergers

Sergers can be a perfect and convenient solution for fraying fabric edges because they do two jobs in one. Not only do they cut the fabric edge, they enclose it at the same time too! Although they are a bit costly, they are worth the investment. For this reason, be sure to educate yourself fully before purchasing one for your sewing kit.

How to Get Sap Out of Clothes

Fall is right around the corner, folks! And although this gives us plenty to look forward to, all seasons have their down-falls, no matter how swell of a year we’re having. When it comes to fall time, one such disadvantage is tree sap production. Fall is a great time of year for all sorts of outdoor activities thanks to the cooler weather and long, sunny days. But outdoor fun can be quickly spoiled once you realize you are covered in sticky tree resin. This stuff is unforgiving, stubborn, and it can ruin your favorite clothes.

Since there is no realistic method for preventing all tree sap mishaps, it is best to learn how to manage a “sticky” situation instead. All you have to do is learn some helpful and effective ways to get tree sap out of clothes. Continue reading to do just that!

What You Can Do About Tree Sap on Clothes

Have you ever got a piece of gum stuck in your hair and used peanut butter to remove it? Well, the process for tree sap removal is a bit similar when it comes to clothing; however, you will need something much stronger than a jar of Jiffy®! Continue reading to learn how to remove tree sap and similar resin stains on clothes and fabrics!

What You Will Need

The materials needed to remove tree sap include cotton balls, acetone nail polish remover, baking soda, undiluted oil soap, stiff-bristled broom or brush, a mop, water, a garden hose, even ice packs or a freezer, and even a butter knife! The materials you’ll require for tree sap removal will depend on where the sap is located. This uncoordinated combination of supplies may seem strange, but they are highly effective when administered properly!

Sap Removal Tips

When tree sap gets on your clothes, freeze it off! Place your sap-stained article of clothing inside the freezer for at least 2 hours, so that it completely freezes up. If you do not have a freezer (or simply no room like the rest of us!), then use ice cubes or ice packs instead. Place them on the affected areas and wait until they are frozen stiff.

After freezing, remove your article of clothing and wedge a butter knife in between the frozen sap and the fabric. Work your way in until the piece is free. Once the majority of sap is scrapped off, apply warm water and vinegar (white distilled preferably) to the spots, and then toss them in the washing machine with detergent.
