How to Get Ink Out of Leather

Whether it’s the living room coach or your favorite strappy purse, ink stains on leather can be a real problem. Fortunately, there are several easy and affordable remedies for removing ink from leather fabrics. These remedies work well on couches, chairs, car seats, purses, brief cases, wallets, jackets, pants, shoes, belts, gloves, and anything else made of leather.

Continue reading to learn some effective ways to get rid of ink stains and prevent permanent discoloration in leather.

Indianapolis Leather Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Leather Alterations 317-845-9077

Leather is a delicate, luxury fabric that requires a higher degree of care and attention. Finding ink stains on such investment pieces can be quite devastating, especially considering the price tag. The best thing you can do when it comes to ink on leather is act fast. As soon as you discover an ink stain, begin the steps to remove it, promptly.

Here is what you’ll need:

Leather Conditioner (Try Weiman® Leather Wipes – $2.99)
Liquid Dishwashing Soap
White Cloth Rags
Cotton Swabs
Rubbing Alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
Liquid Cuticle Remover
Hairspray (Isopropyl alcohol based)
Clean Water

Unfinished Leather

If your leather is unfinished, it does not have a protective layer that helps to impede ink penetration. Ink stains on naked leather requires professional cleaning. How do you know if your leather is finished or not? Try the water runoff test. Simply drop a few beads of water on the surface and observe how the water behaves; if it rolls right off, the leather is finished; if it absorbs into the surface, it is naked.

Leather Dyes and Treatments

It is important to understand that some cleaning products and materials react differently depending on various factors. These include the type of dyes used on the leather, how often it has been conditioned, its age, and more. Always test a product on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it will not react adversely and damage your piece.

Now You Are Ready To Get Started!

There are several ways to remove ink stains in leather, but these 4 do-it-yourself treatments seem to be the most popular and recommended. The method you choose will depend on the products you have on hand, or personal preference.

Remedy ❶ – Liquid Dish Soap

This is a mild approach compared to the others, so try this one first. Simply apply a few drops of soap onto a white rag and gently blot the stain until it dissipates. Do not scrub the stain, otherwise it could spread the ink and worsen the damage.

Remedy ❷ – Rubbing Alcohol

This product is a bit harsher than mild soap, so test it in a small space before using this method. Dip a cotton swab (or white cloth) in rubbing alcohol and gently dab at the stain until the ink lessens, being very careful not to smear the ink around. Finish this method with your leather conditioner.

Remedy ❸ – Hair Spray

When you do not have a bottle of rubbing alcohol on hand, hair sprays that contain isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) are a great “quick fix” for leather ink stains. Just spray a white rag or cotton swab, wait a few seconds, and then dab the stain.

Remedy ❹ – Cuticle Remover

This is a very popular and non-invasive approach to ink removal. Use a non-oil based product, and cover the stain with a generous application. Let the cuticle remover sit for 24 hours, and then blot it up with a clean white rag.

4 Simple Steps to Setting Your Seam Guide to Sew Curves

If you are having trouble getting accurate seam allowances, it may help to review some tips for setting your sewing machine seam guide. Continue reading to learn the 4 basic steps to setting seam guides for sewing curves.

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Start With the Right Materials

To set a seam gauge accurately, you will need some specific materials. If you already have these items, be sure they are still in good condition. If they are old, you may get better results by replacing them with new ones. Here is what you will need:

SEWING MACHINE
SEAM GUIDE
SEWING GAUGE
TAPE MEASURE

You will need to cut out the patterns according to the requirements in the pattern directions. The only way to ensure your pattern pieces will fit together accurately is to get your seam allowances are set correctly. You must practicing watching the seam guide while not the moving sewing machine needle to achieve consistent seam allowances.

Use the Tape Measurer on the Sewing Machine

Refer to the mark on your tape measurer, and then place the machine needle directly on top of it. Next, place the presser foot down on the tape measurer so that it does not move while you work. Also, line up the markings on the presser foot with the markings on the tape measurer to ensure it is straight.

Set Your Seam Gauge

Now place your seam guide at the edge of your tape measurer. Double check that it is perpendicular to the tape measurer. It is also important to make your seam guide the proper length; do not make it too long, and be sure that the fabric will move underneath the needle.

Set Your Seam Guide

When sewing curves, be sure your turning point is directly horizontal with the needle. To set up your turning point, place the sewing gauge right behind needle so that the end of the gauge is even with the edge of the seam guide. Then draw a line along the edge of the seam gauge. The mark that meets the edge of the seam guide is where you will line up your fabric to make your sewing curve.

Top 4 Reasons for Sewing Basting Stitches

As a sewer, you may be asking yourself, “Why baste?” If so, you are asking the right question. Basting is important in many types of sewing projects, and quite helpful for various applications. Continue reading to learn the top four reasons why you should sew basting stitches, and what to do if you need help with your needlework.

Indianapolis Alterations and Sewing Repairs 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Alterations and Sewing Repairs 317-845-9077

Basting is the method of sewing long, easily-removable stitches into two pieces of fabric, and can be done by machine or by hand. It is intended to temporarily connect two pieces of fabric together for the purpose of fulfilling an overall sewing need. The umbrella reason for basting is to save time. Basting does this in many ways, but mostly, by providing ease and convenience. It is worth your time to baste if you find yourself in certain sewing situations.

Here’s 4 reasons why professionals recommend sewing basting stitches:

Test the Fitting

Basting on seams lets you test the fitting (i.e. side seams) or placement (i.e. darts) before making any semi-permanent stitching decisions. It avoids the scenario of having to remove stitches that you later decide are not in the right place, which can jeopardize the structural integrity of the fabric fibers.

Secure Slippery Fabrics

If you are stitching with silk, satin, or something equally slick, basting is highly beneficial. Basting will let you attach to pieces of slippery fabric together while you work at sewing in permanent stitches. Basting will also make it much easier to take out stitches if the fabric pieces do happen to move while you work.

Create Temporary Stitching

Sewing in basting stitches lets you create provisional stitching while you work at sewing in regular seams or accessories. This works well when adding in things like zippers or appliques. It is a great method for making real-time alterations too, such as dress fittings and costume designs.

Make Two Layers of Fabric into One

When working with multiple pieces of fabric that must be held together as one, basting is the perfect course of action to take. It lets you secure two pieces of fabric together as if they were just one solid piece, thus allowing you to make even and balanced fittings, such as adding layers of chiffon to a skirt or folds in curtain valances. They are easily removable too, which lets you eliminate unnecessary bulk.

Need Help With Your Needlework?

If you have found yourself stuck on a project, whether you have hit a roadblock or reached dead end, you have some options to get you back on track. Contact a local and trusted Indianapolis alterations specialist for professional sewing repairs and corrections. They can give you the right advice, and make the proper modifications to correct your project or piece.

How to Remove Sweat Stains From Clothing

Sweat is nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone perspires; it is a natural and healthy function of the human body. Although we must embrace our perspiration, it does not mean we have to let it ruin our favorite clothes! Continue reading to learn how to get rid of unattractive armpit and sweat stains from clothing!

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Perspiration stains on shirts are not just unsightly and awkward, they are seemingly impossible to get out. No matter how many times you run them through the washing machine, the tell-tale, yellowish-brown staining still remains resilient to detergent as ever. They mostly develop as a result of a combination of factors aside from sweat, including body oil, skin flakes, and chemicals in underarm deodorant.

But you don’t have to toss out your favorite tees or turn them into rags just because they are discolored and stained from sweat! There are some effective ways to get rid of them, and you can do it with just a few simple-to-use, store-bought items.

Store-Bought Option

One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pre-treat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout® Triple Enzyme Formula Laundry Stain Remover Spray, both available on Amazon.com for under $10. Simply pre-treat the affected area, and then launder as usual.

Homemade Option

You can also make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. These are highly effective cleaning agents that are safe to use on clothing. You will need a large plastic bowl, a small bowl, a tea kettle (or pot), rubber gloves, scrubbing brush, standard laundry detergent, a microwavable liquid measuring cup ,and of course, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

Here’s What to Do:

Turn your shirt inside out and place it in the large plastic bowl with the armpit sections facing up.

Check the label of the shirt. If it contains spandex, you will need to use a separate approach at this time.

a. If it DOES NOT contain spandex, boil water on the stove, and then pour the boiling water directly over the armpit stains.

b. If it DOES contain spandex, dampen the shirt with cold water first, and then proceed with step a. Hot water can damage the fibers in spandex, so dampening it with cold water will help protect the fibers while removing the sweat stains.

Using your small bowl, combine equal parts (1/4 cup of each is plenty for one shirt) of water, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. The baking soda works well to whiten the fabric and absorb any residual odors, while the hydrogen peroxide disinfects.

Special Note: Because this solution contains hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, it cannot be made ahead of time and stored for later use. Only prepare this solution at the time of treatment, and then discard the remainder down the toilet.

Apply a scoop of your solution and apply it directly to the stained areas, then scrub it in with your scrubbing brush. When thoroughly scrubbed in, rinse clean with water.

Now, simply launder the shirt as usual. If the stains are still visible, repeat this process as needed.

Once the stains are gone, you can let the shirt dry, either in the dryer or by hang drying. Do not let the shirt dry before the stains are out.

Simply catch and treat sweat stains early on to increase the life of your favorite tees and shirts! If you need some clothing repairs, trust your local Indianapolis alterations shop for skilled workmanship at a fair price.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dress Alterations

Choosing a dress is just the first step in coordinating the perfect attire for your special evening or event; and we aren’t talking about shoes and accessories (although those are quite important too!). Once you have that ideal dress in your possession, it is time to make sure it fits like a glove! Professional alterations can add that extra “wow” factor you desire when you put on your new dress. If you have never had a dress professionally altered before, it is helpful to learn some basic facts before getting started.

Continue reading to review some frequently asked questions about dress alterations, and where to go for top-notch tailoring service.

What is a Tailor?

An alterations tailor is a professional seamstress that customizes or alters clothing, apparel, and other existing fabrics or garments. They are different from standard tailors because they do not typically create and fabricate clothing or apparel; instead, they alter or service existing pieces. Alterations tailors are commonly employed by large-scale department stores, clothiers, or they operate their own private business. Professional alteration specialists can alter or fix clothing, apparel, home décor, fabrics, and more. They perform these duties for men, women, adolescents, children, infants, and more.

What Should I Look for in a Dress Tailor?

A professional seamstress will be skilled, competent, and able to confidently and accurately gauge the integrity of fabric and how an alteration will affect its overall proportion. One of the first qualities to look for in a professional tailor is experience. Just like experience, credentials also prove a company’s ability to meet client’s needs. Furthermore, it is wise to ask to samples, and not just pictures, to see what the tailor can do.

How Much Does it Cost to Alter a Dress?

There are many variables that go into determining an accurate estimate for dress alteration. Unfortunately, there isn’t a menu of prices, or a set rate at a seamstress shop. Although the cost of dress alteration is typically the same across the board, the price per piece varies greatly depending on certain factors, such as dress designs, styles, fabrics, décor, and more. Until a seamstress can see the actual garment in person, it is nearly impossible to get an accurate quote for dress alteration.

How Much Does Wedding Dress Alteration Cost?

The cost of dress alterations vary greatly from person to person, dress to dress, and tailor to tailor. However, some alteration shops make custom wedding dresses that generally start out around a base cost of $1500, and go up from there depending on the complexity of the alteration. Then there are two other types of wedding dress alterations, basic and transformation. Basic alterations for wedding dresses can average anywhere from $400 to $600, and up, such as hems, sides, bustles, sleeves, side, and similar modifications. Transformation alterations cost anywhere from $500 and go way up. They include major reconstruction and deconstruction of a dress, as well as, multiple fittings, major adjustments, re-beading, beadwork, and more.

Can Shapewear Be Altered?

Although it is possible to alter your shapewear garment, there is catch. First, the cost of altering your shapewear would be very close to the cost of purchasing a brand new garment. You are looking at a difference of maybe $15 to $20 or so. This close price proximity, coupled with the amount of time and the trips you’ll make to the shop, having your shapewear altered professionally may not be worth it in the end. Furthermore, when you have a shapewear garment altered, there is no guarantee that it will have the same affect it did before it was altered. There will almost always be a slight difference in the way the garment wears and shapes. This is simply unavoidable.

How Long Does it Take to Alter a Dress?

Be sure to always give your alterations professional at least 4 to 8 weeks to complete your dress alterations. Give more time for more complex or delicate apparel. This should be ample time to complete all necessary work, while having some extra time in case of an emergency or last minute repair. Alterations are time consuming, meticulous work. The more time a tailor has to complete the job, the better the results will be.

Tips for Sewing a Seam

When you sew two or more pieces of fabric together, you create what is called a “seam.” Seams are the most basic constructions for sewing. As you continue on the learning curve of sewing and stitching, you will discover that many sewing patterns instruct you to use a specific amount of “seam allowance” so that the pieces of fabric you are working with fit together properly.

Continue reading to learn more about seam allowances, and some helpful pointers for sewing a seam.

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Clothing Alterations 317-845-9077

Seam Allowances

A seam allowance is simply the amount of material between the edge of a piece of fabric and the stitching line. The most common seam allowances for modern sewing patterns are 1/4″, 1/2″ and 5/8″. If you are using a seam allowance of five eighths, that means that there will be five-eighths of an inch of material between the stitch line and the edge of the fabric.

Many sewing machines come with throat plates with built-in seam guides. However, you can also set your own seam guide on your sewing machine. In order to use the stitching guide accurately, you must be sure that your needle is in the right position. You don’t want the sewing machine needle to be in the far left position when you need it in the center!

Curved Seams

At some point in your sewing mastery, you will come across the need to sew curved seams. Sewing curves seams are just the same as sewing a straight seam except you will follow a curved edge rather than a straight one. These are common for arm holes, crotches, and other curved areas of clothing.

Flat Felled Seams

Flat felled seams are commonly seen on heavy-duty fabrics and apparel, like denim and jeans. They are seams with double stitch lines and no “unattached” seam allowance. They are used to close up all crude edges to form a durable and strong seam.

Seam Sewing Advice:

Keep in mind the importance of seam allowances and seam finishes.

Always rely on seam guides to create correct seam allowances.

Be sure to align the pin and fabric edges. You can also baste them together.

Observe the seam line while sewing instead of moving the sewing machine needles to properly sew a straight seam allowance.

Seam finishes preserve the seam allowance and stabilize the seam, making them vital aspects of an apparel sewing project.

FAQS About Fusible Web

If you are new to the sewing world, you may have come across a product at your local fabrics store called fusible web. Regardless of your skill level, you can easily learn about fusible web, including when and how to use it.

Get started by reading through some frequently asked questions and answers regarding fusible web, and who to consult for trusted sewing advice.

Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077

Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077

What is Fusible Web?

Fusible web is a man-made fiber that contains a built-in adhesive that melts when heat is applied. It is commonly used for appliques, hem repair, or to “fuse” to pieces of fabric together.

How Do I Use Fusible Web?

First, it is important to always read the instructions that come with the particular web product you are using. You will do well to also test the fusible web on a scrap piece to see how it works with your iron and the material you intend to fuse. Before using fusible web on a project piece, the material must be thoroughly washed and dried. Pre-shrinking the fabric eliminates the factory finishes, which can reverse or weaken fusion. Be sure to save the paper backing that comes on your fusible web to sketch out patterns, as well as, protect your project pieces and iron (See the last FAQ).

Are There Different Types of Fusible Web?

Fusible web comes in roll-form and typically sold by the yard. You can find it at any local fabrics or craft store in a wide range of sizes, widths, and weights. When choosing web weight, stick to the weight that is closes to the fabric you are working with. This will give you the most control and the best results. For example, use a light weight web for a thin, satin fabric, and a heavier weighted web for fabrics like denim or corduroy.

Can I Use a Heavy Weight Fusible Web on Light Weight Fabrics?

Beginners often presume that using a heavy weight web is the best way to get a strong, long-lasting fuse. However, this is not true. It is important to match weights between project pieces and fusible web. For instance, if you are fusing an applique patch to a pair of denim jeans, it would be apposite to use a heavy weight fusible web. In contrast, if you were fusing together a silk blouse hem, you would want to go with a lighter fusible web.

Can I Iron Fusible Web?

It is important to protect your iron and your ironing board from a potential fusible web messy disaster. Use the paper backing to place on top of your work before applying your hot iron. This will prevent a sticky, gooey, mess on both your iron and the ironing board. If you do get some fusible web gunk on your iron, try soaking cotton balls in rubbing alcohol and applying it to the affected area.

What You Need to Know About Fabric Grain

Your sewing projects are important to you, which is exactly why furthering your knowledge is a critical aspect of your overall improvement. Understanding fabric grain can help you enhance your sewing skills, and achieve the level of stitching and embroidery you’ve been working toward all these years.

Continue reading to learn more about the different types of fabric grains and how they should influence your sewing projects.

Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077

The Importance of Following Fabric Grain

Virtually all fabrics are materials made from weaving together a series of threads. Any thread-woven fabric has an attribute called fabric grain, or grain lines. This is important to sewing because the fabric grain affects how the material moves when drawn. Depending on the type of fabric grain, your sewing technique may vary.

Working against the fabric grain can result in ill-fitting and improperly draped garments since the fabric is not manufactured to move in the opposite direction. If you want to produce quality work for your sewing projects, it is vital to understand fabric grain. A good place to start is learning how to find it on your material.

How to Find the Fabric Grain

Locating the fabric grain is simple. For starters, most materials will instantly warn you if you sew along the bias or cut against the grain by curling, warping, or puckering at the seams. However, it is wise to locate the direction of the fabric grain before you begin your sewing project. To do this, simply pull on the material in all directions. The direction that gave the least resistance to stretching is the natural direction of the grain lines.

Common Types of Fabric Grain

There are three common types of grain lines. These include lengthwise, crosswise, and bias fabric grains. Lengthwise fabric grains, also known as the fabric’s “warp”, are grain lines that run along the length of the material, and parallel to the selvage of the material. Crosswise grain lines run perpendicular to the selvage of the fabric. And bias fabric grains run at a 45 degree angle to the lengthwise and crosswise grain of the fabric.
