What You Need To Measure Men’s Trousers

You will need a few materials in order to properly measure for men’s trousers. Start with measuring tape. Be sure to also have some pen and paper on hand. Additionally, you will require a pair of helping hands of your choosing. These materials will help you generate an accurate finished measurement for men’s pants.

Where to Focus Your Measurements

When measuring for men’s trousers, start with the waist measurement, then measure the hips, inseam, and outseam. These four elements will deliver the most accurate foundation for measuring men’s trousers.

Waist – To measure a man’s waist, hold your measuring tape around the abdomen tightly, directly above the hip bones, and right below the belly button. Basically, you want to look for the natural indentation of the waistline and measure there.

Hip – To measure a man’s hips, circle the measuring tape around the fullest part of the seat region. Be sure to pull the tape tightly to get an accurate reading. Then record your measurement.

Inseam – To accurately measure the inseam of a man’s trousers, you will need to do the measurement with the pants on. Place your measuring tape along the inner seam of the left or right pant leg, starting where the pant leg seam meets the groin seam. Measure all the way down to the ankles and record your numbers. Do the same thing on the opposite leg, as some inseam measurements will not be the same.

Outseam – To measure the out seem of a man’s pants, you also need to do the measuring with the pants on them. Begin by placing your measuring tape along the outer seam of the pants on either the left or right side of the trousers. Measure from the top of the waistband all the way down to the ankles and record your findings. Do the same measurement on the opposite pant leg. Record these findings as well.

A Suit Tailored Just For You

If you want to look and feel like James Bond in your suit, you must get it to fit perfectly. In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to have it custom-tailored to your body type. A professional tailor knows exactly how to measure you from top to bottom in a way that best flatters your shape, as well as the style of the particular suit. Although it is expected for your tailor to have this knowledge, you might be a little lost on what actually makes a suit a good fit, especially if it is your first time having one custom fitted, or wearing a suit for the first time altogether!

So, to better prepare yourself for your appointment, or to simply assess your suit tailoring needs, it helps to review the top attributes of a well-tailored suit. They are as follows:

? Trousers

Extra length on your suit’s trousers will instantly give you a sloppy and disheveled look, and even make you appear shorter in stature. Your trousers should be hemmed so they sit just above the rim of your shoe. If your suit style calls for a bit of an exposed ankle, your tailor will know to make the proper adjustments. In addition to proper hems, suit trousers should also be properly tapered.

? Shoulders

Your suit’s jacket should be perfectly fitted in a way that is not too tight nor too loose around the shoulder areas. Your jacket should gently hug your shoulders, without causing any fabric to buckle, roll, or crease. If the seams of the shoulders are sagging below the natural curve of your back, your jacket is too big. If the jacket is tight, it is very likely that the shoulder areas are to blame.

? Sleeves

Just like trousers, jacket sleeves should be properly hemmed and tapered to complement your body shape and size, as well as the style of the suit. You do not want them to be too short, and expose too much dress shirt, nor do you want them to be so long that you look like you’re wearing your dad’s suit. The general rule of thumb is for jacket sleeves to stop ¼ to ½ of an inch before the shirt sleeve.

? Collar Gap

A properly fitted suit will have a jacket collar that sits perfectly against the collar of your dress shirt. If your jacket collar is not properly fitted, there will be a noticeable gap between the two collars, leaving you to look less dapper than you intended. Although a small gap is not necessarily a fashion faux pas, a larger one will get you some negative attention.

? Jacket Waist

If you are not girthy in the mid-section, it is very likely that your jacket suit will need to be taken in. Otherwise, you will appear box-like in your suit. For those with a fuller middle, it is not always necessary to have the jacket wait altered, however, a tailor can sometimes make certain adjustments that are more flattering on you than the factory design.

3 Tips for Re-Evaluating Your Wardrobe

Even though it is not quite time for spring cleaning, many people are ready to purge their closets right now. Whether you want to rearrange your closet from summer to winter clothing, create more storage space, or curate a whole new wardrobe, there are three simple rules to get you started and keep you on the most efficient track. Continue reading to learn a recommended approach to re-evaluating your wardrobe.

Prepare Yourself to Make Tough Choices

When you are purging things in your closet, the goal is to make more space, either for clutter control or to make room for newer things. For this reason, you will have to equip yourself with some strength and determination to follow through with the purge. Be prepared to make some tough decisions regarding what to keep, what to stow away, and what to eliminate. You might want to hold on to the past 5 year’ worth of Halloween costumes, but encourage yourself to be reasonable.

Organize Your Clothing

Start by organizing your clothing according to what can and cannot be altered for a better or updated fit. Rather than spending hundreds of dollars on a new suit or dress, have it professionally tailored. Virtually all clothing articles can be repaired, adjusted, or altered. Broken zippers, frayed fabrics, torn leather, unraveled sequence, and more can be fixed with the right professional on the job. Be sure to choose a qualified Indianapolis alterations shop for the best service and long-lasting results.

Donate Old or Non-Redeemable Clothes

For the articles of clothing in your wardrobe that is beyond reasonable repair or re-purposing, do not toss them in the garbage. Instead, donate them to people or organizations that need them, such as homeless shelters, animal shelters, school art programs, and similar places. For clothes that are perfectly good but obsolete in terms of fashion, donate them to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill center.

Alterations Make Clothing Better

Clothes that fit better look better. But you might have avoided altering your clothes all this time due to a misconception about cost. You might think clothing alterations are out of your budget, but the truth is, they can save you thousands of dollars in new clothing purchases. The same benefits apply to home décor like bedding and curtains. You would be surprised to learn just what professional seamstresses can fix, adjust, and repair!

? Sizing Your Pants

Picking the right fit for your stature is how you can achieve a stylish look that works for you. So be sure you are considering your build when choosing a pant size. Are you big and tall? Or perhaps tall and slender? Maybe you are short and slender? Make these considerations before making a final purchasing decision. Read our blog, “How to Choose the Right Pant Fit for Men” to learn more about matching your build to the perfect pair of pants.

? Alter Your Suits

Tuxedos and suits are not just for weddings anymore. A suit can be dressed into many different styles for many different occasions. But in order to look your best while getting the perfect comfort and feel, you’ll need to make a few tweaks. After all, a well-tailored suit or tux can make a world of difference in fit and fashion. Sleeves, lapels, blazers, jacket lengths, collars, necklines, hems, pleats, cummerbunds, dress shirts, zippers, buttons, pockets, and even ties and pocket scarves occasionally need altering.  The same goes for boy’s suits and tuxedos.

? Manage Sweat Stains

Whether you are active in sports or work outside in the hot sun every day, your body is bound to sweat. In order to protect your clothing from permanent stains, you must take the proper precautions, like using fabric softener and buying clothing that is made with better quality material. But sweat stains can still happen, and when they do, be sure to take immediate action to remove them. One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pretreat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout®  You can also make your own solution using baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Men Have Tailoring Options Too!

When you think of alterations, images of dresses and gowns might pop into your head; but alteration services aren’t just for women and girls. Men have tailoring options too! A well-tailored suit or clothing is next to gold for some men. In fact, a properly tailored suit or tailored clothing can make a man look that much more dignified and professional. Aside from suits, there are several other types of tailoring options and common alterations for men’s and boy’s clothing. Continue reading and learn some other tailoring possibilities for the guys!

Suits and Tuxedos

Tuxedos and suits are not just for weddings anymore. A suit can be dressed into many different styles for many different occasions. Whether a leisurely night on the town, a company conference, or a black-tie function for charity, a well-tailored suit or tux can make a world of difference in fit and fashion. Sleeves, lapels, blazers, jacket lengths, collars, necklines, hems, pleats, cummerbunds, dress shirts, zippers, buttons, pockets, and even ties and pocket scarves occasionally need altering. To get that perfect comfort and feel, men’s clothing sometimes need a few tweaks to get it just right. The same goes for boy’s suits and tuxedos.

Denim and Leather

Men are known to own many pairs of jeans. They keep buying more and more, so they must love the way they feel. But to get an even better look and more comfort, denim alterations will do the trick. Men are commonly getting their new jeans altered for length and width. Men who are exceptionally tall like to have their jeans custom made, which is something a trained tailor can certainly do! In addition to denim hemming, take-ins, and width adjustments, zippers, pleats, and pockets are often in need or repair or alteration. Again, the same applies to boy’s denim clothing.

As for leather, men like their leather jackets, belts, and more. And since these garments are generally expensive, it is likely for them to be altered or repaired when in need. Cuffs, sleeves, shoulders, rips, tears, zippers, and more can be altered or repaired by a trained tailor.

Jerseys, Uniforms, and More

Other common garments worn by men and boys are sports jerseys and uniforms. Whether a school jersey or uniform, or for work, alterations are important to keep them in their best condition possible. Certain jerseys are not replaceable, therefore, when a repair or alteration is needed, it can truly save the garment from becoming trash. Work uniforms sometimes cost money to replace, so when a zipper is broken or a few buttons go missing, the best option is to take it to an alteration shop for a cheap and quick repair.

How to Choose the Right Pant Fit for Men

Men come in all different statures, dimensions, sizes, shapes, and more. All men’s bodies are different, so it takes some knowledge and a little experience to know how to dress yourself in a way that flatters your unique build the most. When it comes to clothing, not every fit is treated equally! Depending on your particular figure, clothing will fit differently. It is up to you to use the right combination of style and awareness of fit, to find the right pair of pants for you. Continue reading to learn how to match yourself to a pant type that suits you and your shape the best.

Get the Right Look!

Picking the right fit for your stature is how you can achieve a stylish look that works for you. Match your build to the descriptions below and learn what pant-type you should be looking for!

Big and Tall

The gentlemen that fit in this category have long legs, and with either a big or flat abdomen. Either way, they will need a pant with a long rise and long leg length. For full abdomens, try a flat front pants in a full cut, and for flatter mid-sections, try a flat front or pleated pant.

Tall and Slender

For taller men, boot cut or trim cut pants flatter their height best. They can also try flat fronted pants or pleated pants, with or without cuffs. Buy regular rise pants with longer leg lengths are key for these builds.

Short and Slender

Shorter men look best without all the excess bulk. Choosing flat front pants over pleated pants eliminates this unflattering bulkiness by reducing fullness in the thigh down to the ankle. Look for short-rise or low rise pants, something with a shorter inseam, like a trim cut.

Short and Heavy

Heavier set, short men want to shop for flat fronted, full cut, and low rise pants. This is a difficult combination to find on the racks, so most gentlemen have better luck using an Indianapolis men’s tailoring shop to achieve a comfortable and flattering fit.

Just Short

Men who have average builds but are just short want to dress themselves in a pant with a low rise, short inseam, and preferably no cuffs. Cuffs can just emphasize a shorter stature. Try flat front pants, and avoid pleated pants.

Short Torso, Long Legs

This is a tricky build to dress, but it turns out that a short rise pant with a longer inseam really does the trick! Try boot cut, low rises, and traditional cuts for the most gratifying fits.

Long Torso, Short Legs

For these particular builds, we just do the opposite of short torso and long legs. This means buying pants with a long rise and short inseam. Lean towards traditional cuts with flat fronts.

Big Belly and Thighs

Men with big bellies have trouble keeping their pants from sliding down. In order to combat this problem, try on flat fronted traditional cut pants for a comfortable and flattering look. Don’t make the mistake of buying a larger pant size so it feels better around your waist because then the rear will be too big. Also, steer clear of pleated pants.

Big Belly, Flat Rear, and Thin Thighs

These builds also have a hard time keeping their pants from sliding down due to their big bellies, but it is hard to find a proper pant fit with thin thighs and a flatten rear. Men of this stature should look for pants with a trim cut and a flat front. This will ensure a proper fit in all these areas. Pleated pants will only emphasize these traits so avoid them.

Small Waist, Big Thighs

This is the build that works well with pleated pants. They give you ample room in the backside and thigh area, providing comfort and style. Long rise and full cut pants are the best option here.

The easiest way to get the best fit for your pants is to trust an experienced tailor to alter your pants and suits for an optimal fit! A tailor can custom fit and alter pants, suits, dress shirts, cuffs, sleeves, coats, jackets, and more to fit your perfectly.
