How to Button a Men’s Blazer the Right Way

Men have a plethora of options on the style market when it comes to single-breasted blazers and suit jackets. But without the right buttoning knowledge, style is not guaranteed. To be fashion-forward in 2022, it is important to know how to button a men’s blazer the right way. Continue below for some tips that will help you become an instant expert, plus information on what to do if your jackets don’t seem to fit the way you envisioned them to.

Which Blazer Jacket Do You Have?

When it comes to deciding how to button a single-breasted men’s blazer or suit jacket, the question you must ask yourself is, “Which kind of blazer is it?” Traditional blazer jackets come with one, two, or three buttons. There are very few that come with more than three buttons, or none at all. The button count on your blazer will help you make the right fashioning decision for your wardrobe occasion.

Here’s a Guide to Help You:

1 Button Single-Breasted Blazers – If you have a single-breasted blazer or suit jacket with one button, you have two rules to follow: Always have it buttoned when standing and always have it unbuttoned when sitting. This will ensure you are both fashion-forward and comfortable.

2 Button Single-Breasted Blazers – If you have a single-breasted blazer that has two buttons, you have two options. Easy to remember; right? Button the top button when standing and leave it unfastened when sitting. Do not button the bottom button. Just don’t.

3 Button Single-Breasted Blazers – If your single-breasted blazer or suit jacket has three buttons, you have rules to follow. When standing, always have the middle button fastened, but you can add the top button with it if you want. Do not leave the jacket unbuttoned entirely and never fasten the bottom one.

What’s Wrong With the Bottom Button?

Although the bottom button on a single-breasted blazer is functional, it is not supported by the 2020 fashion experts. Not only will buttoning the bottom button of a blazer or suit jacket add on extra poundage, but it will also be quite uncomfortable when walking, sitting, or moving in general. There are some exceptions to this rule, so just use your best judgement. After all, how you feel is what’s most important!

Blazer Not Fitting Right?

When your jackets don’t seem to fit right no matter how you wear them, you may have better luck with professional alteration services. A tailor can alter your jackets and blazers to fit your measurements perfectly. Just be sure to choose a reputable and experienced Indianapolis alterations shop for quality results you can trust.

Important Wedding Dress Alteration Tips

Schedule Alterations Ahead of Time

Time really is of the essence when it comes to wedding dress alterations. It is vital that you schedule your alterations well in advance, giving yourself plenty of time for additional fittings and adjustments, including emergency modifications. It is recommended to schedule your wedding dress alterations 2 to 3 months before your actual wedding day. Prepare enough time to have at least three appointments with your tailor.

The same time schedule applies to additional bridal alterations, such as tuxedo and bridesmaid gowns. It is recommended to schedule those alterations at least three months out to ensure that everyone included in the wedding is ready to go by your special day.

Be Realistic With Your Alteration Expectations

Before scheduling to have your wedding dress altered, it is important to be realistic with your vision. Ask yourself, “Are my wedding dress modifications even possible?” This is an important question to ask because you could be setting your expectations too high, which can ultimately set yourself up for disappointment later on. Furthermore, you do not want to waste any money going back and forth with a tailor who cannot perform your desired modifications.

Be Realistic With Your Alteration Budget

It is very easy to underestimate the cost of wedding dress alterations. For this reason, it is important to set yourself up for success by creating a realistic budget for all tailoring services related to your wedding, including your wedding dress, bridal alterations that you might be paying for out-of-pocket, and your soon-to-be spouse’s tuxedo alterations. In 2022, the projected average for wedding alterations is around $750. If you are paying for your bridal party’s alterations, you can expect this price to double or triple depending on the number of people in your wedding and the types of garments being altered.

Find the Best Tailor in Town

Your wedding day is one of the most important milestones of your life, and therefore, deserves the highest quality alterations. Be sure to do your research and find a local Indianapolis alteration shop with the highest customer reviews and ratings. You want a wedding dress tailor who has extensive experience and the resources necessary to perform the highest quality craftsmanship on your luxury fabrics, and in a time frame that works for you.

Keep Your Measurements in Mind

When you are starting the process of wedding dress alterations, it is vital that you keep your measurements in mind all the way up until your actual wedding day. A lot of brides like to lose weight or get fit before their wedding day, which can backfire if they don’t schedule a final fitting after losing the weight they wanted to lose. On the opposite end of the scale, it is important to consider any weight gain that might take place before your wedding day, like brides in the early stages of pregnancy or patients who are scheduled for a plastic surgery enhancement or augmentation.

Clearly Communicate With Your Tailor

Many brides make the mistake of not speaking up when it comes to their wedding gown alterations. At each fitting, it is important to be very clear with your tailor on your overall vision for your dress. Many alteration shops are still old-fashioned and will perform bridal adjustments that might be outdated compared to modern-day fits and drapes. To avoid excessive fittings and adjustments, be very transparent with your tailor on how you want your dress to fit. If something doesn’t seem right, speak up. They want you to!

Bring All Wedding Dress Garments and Accessories to Every Fitting

Perhaps one of the most important wedding dress alteration tips, and surely the most frequent mistake made by brides, is to always bring in every single undergarment and accessory you plan to wear on your wedding day to each wedding dress alteration fitting. This includes shoes, veils, sashes, garter belts, lingerie, hosiery, panties, brassieres, corsets, shape wear, hair extensions, hair accessories, and even jewelry. Every single thing you put on along with your wedding dress can impact how your dress fits overall. So, it is important to have all of these elements with you for every single fitting to ensure that your alterations are on the right track.

Try to Come to Your Alteration Appointments Alone

Although it might not feel natural, it is strongly encouraged to come to your alteration appointments alone or with just one other person. Your wedding dress is all about you, and outside opinions can really impact your decision-making during a fitting. Not only is it more effective to communicate with your tailor when you are alone or with just one other person, but it allows you to indulge in your own personal vision. You can better avoid second-guessing your wishes based on someone else’s suggestion or comment. Furthermore, alteration shops are usually tight spaces. They are not great for accommodating large crowds.

Are you looking for the best wedding dress tailoring services in Indianapolis? Contact Yong’s Alterations at 317-845-9077 for the highest-rated wedding dress alterations in Indianapolis, Indiana. We also provide alterations for bridesmaid dresses and men’s tailoring for tuxedo alterations.

What You Need To Measure Men’s Trousers

You will need a few materials in order to properly measure for men’s trousers. Start with measuring tape. Be sure to also have some pen and paper on hand. Additionally, you will require a pair of helping hands of your choosing. These materials will help you generate an accurate finished measurement for men’s pants.

Where to Focus Your Measurements

When measuring for men’s trousers, start with the waist measurement, then measure the hips, inseam, and outseam. These four elements will deliver the most accurate foundation for measuring men’s trousers.

Waist – To measure a man’s waist, hold your measuring tape around the abdomen tightly, directly above the hip bones, and right below the belly button. Basically, you want to look for the natural indentation of the waistline and measure there.

Hip – To measure a man’s hips, circle the measuring tape around the fullest part of the seat region. Be sure to pull the tape tightly to get an accurate reading. Then record your measurement.

Inseam – To accurately measure the inseam of a man’s trousers, you will need to do the measurement with the pants on. Place your measuring tape along the inner seam of the left or right pant leg, starting where the pant leg seam meets the groin seam. Measure all the way down to the ankles and record your numbers. Do the same thing on the opposite leg, as some inseam measurements will not be the same.

Outseam – To measure the out seem of a man’s pants, you also need to do the measuring with the pants on them. Begin by placing your measuring tape along the outer seam of the pants on either the left or right side of the trousers. Measure from the top of the waistband all the way down to the ankles and record your findings. Do the same measurement on the opposite pant leg. Record these findings as well.

Common Wedding Dress Errors to Avoid

One of the most important tips any bride can learn is to schedule a fitting and alterations appointment the SAME DAY they find and purchase a gown. It is the only way to ensure a stress-free wedding planning process. Getting your fittings and alterations started as soon as possible leaves ample time for mistake-fixing and working out all the kinks. No one wants to be altering their wedding dress the NIGHT BEFORE their wedding day! Below are some tips on probable wedding dress blunders so you can avoid them on your special day!

Do Not Forget to Bring Your Wedding Dress Shoes

When you show up for your fitting, be sure to bring your shoes you plan to wear with you. If you plan to swap shoes in the middle of your reception, bring these shoes as well. It is important for the tailor to measure your dress alterations while wearing your shoes so that the dress is not too long or too short on the day of your ceremony. You also want your dress to move smoothly and effortless with each step, as to not make you trip over your hem.

Also Bring Your Undergarments and Accessories to Every Fitting

Be sure to also bring all undergarments and accessories you plan to wear with your wedding dress. Undergarments include brassieres, bustier, panties, Spanx, slimming garments, hosiery, garters, and more. By having your full outfit with you, your tailor can properly plan and measure the perfect fit for your wedding dress. If you do not try on your dress with these intended undergarments, your dress may be too tight, too short, too long, or uncomfortable in some other manner.

Wedding Dress Accessories

It is also important to bring all other accessories you plan to use or wear on your wedding day to be sure they work with your alterations. Bring veils, gloves, hosiery, jewelry, sashes, capes, and body chains. and more. This helps to see if the sizes, designs, shapes, and fits work with the dress and the alterations. Once you have these items on, and you are fully dressed the way you intend to be on your special day, try walking! More than walking, try sitting, bending, and even dancing. You need to see how the dress is going to flow and fit when you are walking around and moving.

What Does a Tailor Do at an Alterations Shop?

An alterations tailor is a professional seamstress that customizes or alters clothing, apparel, and other existing fabrics or garments. They are different from standard tailors because they do not typically create and fabricate clothing or apparel; instead, they alter or service existing pieces. Alterations tailors are commonly employed by large-scale department stores, clothiers, or they operate their own private business. Professional alteration specialists can alter or fix clothing, apparel, home décor, fabrics, and more. They perform these duties for men, women, adolescents, children, infants, and more.

What You Can Expect From Professional Tailoring Services

Tailors Work With Virtually All Garments and Fabrics

There is no end to the types of fabrics and clothing an alterations tailor will fix. They accept old clothing, costumes, new clothing, barely-worn clothing, wedding attire, suits, curtains, and more. These alterations can range in level of difficulty, from simple to highly complex. This is why there is no definite price or cost associated with tailoring services. It is all dependent on the amount of time, labor, and materials needed to complete the task.

Tailors Prefer to Have Client Fittings for Best Results

Most alteration specialists prefer to have their client present for measurement and assessment purposes. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. When a person cannot be present for a fitting, the alterations can be much more difficult to complete. In the case that a client cannot come in for an appointment, the tailor will simply receive the article of clothing with a tag on it, explain the alteration instructions. This is not the best case scenario for customer or tailor. Measuring the progress of a custom fitting or alteration is vital for a perfect fit or repair.

Tailors are Exceptionally Good at Clothing Repair

The most prevalent requests at an alterations shop are clothing repairs. Issues like ripped or torn clothing, stretched collars and sleeves, lapels, pockets, hemlines, and more are the most common alterations for clothing. They can even mend rugs, curtains, tablecloths, and various other fabric home décor!

They are Also the Best for Formal Clothing Alterations

As for formal wear, wedding dress alterations is by far the most popular. Almost every bride requires Indianapolis wedding dress tailoring to get that perfect fit. The same goes for bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos. Tailors are also adept at all other types of formal wear alterations, such as business suits, evening gowns, recital outfits, costumes, and more.

Tailors Need Time to Get it Just Right

Alteration shops really encourage clients to bring their garments in for modifications and repairs as early as possible to ensure they are ready by the desired date or occasion. Once in the hands of the tailor, the amount of time it takes for the alteration to be finished depends on a variety of factors, including the number of fittings needed, size of the garment, complexity of the alteration, and more. Well-established alterations shops can often provide same-day alterations and rush alterations upon request.

Are you in need of some clothing repairs, or perhaps professional alterations for an upcoming special event? Contact Yong’s Alterations at 317-845-9077 for the best-rated alteration services in Indianapolis, Indiana. We tailor men, women, children, and even home décor!

Wedding and Bridal Gown Alterations

The first thing to consider when it comes to wedding and bridal alterations is where to go. We are not talking about location; we are referring to the actual alteration specialist or shop. Wedding dresses are precious and bridal wear is expensive, so it is important to take them to a highly trained, experienced, and accomplished tailor for professional-grade alterations. Look for years of experience, high regards or memberships from respected organizations, community recognition, and past work. Be sure to read reviews and don’t hesitate to ask other patrons and client about their services.

Once you find a reputable and proficient tailor, it is important to get familiar with terms and processes for bridal gown and wedding dress alterations before your first consultation. This way, you are not overwhelmed with industry jargon and lingo you don’t understand. There are countless alterations that exists for apparel and home goods alike; however, when it comes to bridal wear and wedding gowns, there are three principal types.  These include hemming, sleeve alterations, and bodice alterations. Scheduling ahead is vital for wedding alteration consultations. Be sure to always bring all accessories and garments to your fittings. This includes veils, jewelry, shoes, gloves, and more.

Understand That Cost Depends on Several Factors

When it comes to the cost of wedding alterations, final invoices can vary greatly. Rates are defined by the complexity of the work done, the time it takes to complete, the style of dress, and the quantity of garments. It is important to understand that wedding alterations are not going to be cheap. Wedding dresses are not cheap, so the alterations for them shouldn’t be either. You get what you pay for in the alterations business. Poor quality work is cheaper than master tailor services. Just because wedding alterations are not cheap doesn’t mean they are not affordable. Discuss your budget with the alterationist before moving forward with any work.

Consult With Your Tailor Way Ahead of Time

Be sure to always give your alterationist at least 8 weeks to complete your wedding dress alterations. This is ample time to complete all necessary work, while having some extra time in case of an emergency or last minute repair. Alterations are time consuming, meticulous work. The more time a tailor has to complete the job, the better the results will be.

Cost Effective Alternatives to Silk Fabric

Have you ever wondered why silk fabric is so expensive? Well, as it may be, silk is an extraordinary material. It is derived solely from the delicate, fine threads spun by silkworms. Since it takes 12 pounds of fully-spun silkworm cocoons to produce 1 pound of pure silk material, you can imagine why the fabric is so high-end and high-priced. But that’s not all. Silk retains a wide range of luxurious qualities that make it a highly sought-out material by sewing professionals and hobbyists all around the world. But not everyone has the budget to constantly work with pure silk, which is why there are so many innovative alternatives that are more cost-effective and budget-friendly.

Continue reading to learn more about silk, and some cheaper alternatives that will work well for your next sewing project.

The Origins of Silk

The organic matter used to produce silk comes from silkworms, which are the caterpillars of the Bombux Mori moth. The production of silk began in ancient China (the Silk Road), and for the past several millennia it has continued to be a rare and naturally-occurring commodity used for all sorts of applications, from clothing and apparel, to home décor, tapestries, purses, shoes, curtains, and so much more. Silk is a strong and sturdy material, yet extremely lightweight.

It is highly suited for dying applications, and retains color for a long time. Best of all, it is smooth and dreamy to the touch, and will flow properly when sewed that way. Now, there are still some disadvantages to the material. Silk is high maintenance and requires very gentle cleaning according to very specific criteria. Furthermore, it is expensive. Fortunately, there are some great alternatives to silk that work well and fit the budget.

Blended Silk Fabrics are a Cheaper Alternative to Pure Silk

The best alternatives to expensive silk include blended silk fabrics, such as linen-silk, cotton-silk, silk velvet, organza, shantung (also known as slub silk), and even satin in some cases. These fabrics deliver much of the same, sought-after qualities as silk, but come with a much friendlier price tag.

Linen-Silk – Incredibly similar to silk, but a lot cheaper.

Cotton-Silk – A cheaper alternative with very similar properties to silk.

Silk Velvet – Very lustrous, and a lot warmer and softer than other velvet blends, such as cotton or synthetic elements.

Organza – A sheer fabric that is very fine, yet crisp. Common applications include interior home décor, such as curtains and table linens, as well as formalwear.

Shantung (Slub Silk) – This fabric originated from China’s Shangdong Province, and has a rough, tweedy texture to it, making it well-suited for applications such as

Satin – Glossy on one side, and matte on the other, satin is made with pure silk, and will be the costliest of all the alternatives. For cheaper satins, look for ones made with cotton or synthetic fibers.

What Can I Do if My Dress is Too Long? What if it is too short?

A simple dress hem is the perfect solution to a dress that is too long. This is a simple job that can be done in as little as a day or two. Oppositely, if your dress is a tad bit too short, there is a perfectly good solution for that too! Your tailor can add more fabric, or perhaps an under layer of tulle or chiffon, to make it the right length.

Can I Have a Zipper Removed From a Dress?

Many women buy fall in love with a dress, but not the gaudy and uncomfortable zipper in the back. Again, this is a common and simple alteration that can be completed in just a day or so. It is recommended to not try to remove a zipper on your own, as it requires specific sewing tools and hands-on experience to do it flawlessly.

What Do I Need to Bring to My Dress Fitting?

When you show up for your fitting, be sure to bring your shoes you plan to wear with you. If you plan to swap shoes in the middle of your event, bring those shoes too. It is also important to bring all other accessories you plan to use or wear on your wedding day to be sure they work with your alterations, including all undergarments you plan to wear, as well as any veils, gloves, hosiery, jewelry, and more. This helps to see if the sizes, designs, shapes, and fits work with the dress and the alterations.

Can I Alter a Dress Myself?

If you have a lot of hands-on sewing and fashionista experience, then go for it! But if you are planning to watch some instructional videos online and them attempt a dress alteration yourself, please reconsider. Although people online might make it look really easy to bring in a waist or shorten a hemline, there are more variables to it than you think. Always entrust a professional tailor for any dress alteration needs if you want flawless results that look as if you bought the dress that way!

Average Cost of Wedding Formal Wear Alterations

There are so many variables that go into determining an accurate estimate for wedding dress and bridal wear alterations. So disappointingly, there aren’t set menus of prices, nor set rates at your local Indianapolis alterations shop. Although the cost of alterations for wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses are typically the same across the board, the price per piece varies greatly depending on certain factors. There are endless dress designs, styles, fabrics, décor, and more, all of which require different methods and levels of care for alteration. This relates to the amount of time it takes to alter a wedding dress.

Time frames always depend on the style of dress and the complexity of the alteration requested. You must also consider the count, if you are a bride paying for all of your bridesmaid alterations. Until a seamstress can see the actual garment in person, it is nearly impossible to get a quote for wedding or bridesmaid dress alterations. Never expect an over-the-phone quote for dress modifications! And if you get one, you might not want to trust the shop and their business ethics. They could just be trying to get you through their doors.

Wedding Dresses

Most alteration companies can make custom wedding dresses that generally start out around a base cost of $1500 and go up from there depending on the difficulty of the alteration. Then there are two other types of wedding dress alterations, basic and transformation. Basic alterations for wedding dresses can average anywhere from $400 to $600, and up. These kinds of alterations include hems, sides, bustles, sleeves, side, and similar modifications. Transformation alterations cost anywhere from $500 and go way up. They include major reconstruction and deconstruction of a dress, as well as, multiple fittings, major adjustments, re-beading, bead work, and more.

Bridesmaid Dresses

Basic alterations for bridesmaid dresses are a bit lower compared to wedding gowns. Generally, they can average anywhere from $75 to $300, give or take. There are several variables that can affect the final cost of tailoring, such as the complexity of the dress design, delicacy of fabric, size, and more.
