3 Reasons Why You Should Air Dry Your Clothes

Do you mindlessly pull out your clothes from the washing machine and instantly toss them into the dryer? If so, you may want to rethink your laundry room routine. Opting for an air drying approach delivers a wide range of benefits that can improve your quality of life and even save you some money. Continue reading to learn the top three reasons why you should air dry your clothing apparel and bedding, and what to do if your clothes or upholstered articles require some repair.

Top Air Drying Benefits

Lessen Energy Consumption

Although you may not realize it, your drying machine utilizes a lot of energy, which in turn increases your utility bills every month. By air drying your textiles, whether that means your clothing, bedding, towels, or upholstered items, you are reducing your energy consumption by a nominal amount. As a result, you actively lower your monthly utility bills and increased your annual savings.

Keep a Proper Fit

Not all of us can have our clothing custom tailored to fit our bodies, which are prone to be ever-changing in size and shape. Drying machines can shrink clothing, warp clothing, stretch out callers, and loosen elastics and fitted sheets and articles of clothing with similar stretchy binding. So, to help keep your clothes from warping out of shape, avoid using the dryer and opt for an air drying approach instead.

Reduce Wear and Tear

It is no secret that using the drying machine over and over again will eventually fade your clothing, promote lint balls, snags, and shedding, and even change the shape and fit. What does this lead to? It leads to you spending even more money on newer clothes so that you can stay looking your best. To save money on premature wardrobe replacement expenses, opt for air drying your clothing instead. This will keep your clothes brilliant and bright and help maintain the integrity of the fabric.

?✨ ALL THREE OF THESE AIR DRYING BENEFITS SAVE YOU MONEY NOW AND IN THE LONG RUN!

4 Ways to Fuse Fabric Without Sewing

Not all sewing projects have to be about sewing. Did you know there are other ways to fuse fabrics together without using a needle and thread? Continue reading to learn the top four ways to join fabric without sewing, and what recourse to take if your project doesn’t turn out quite the way you expected it to.

Your Non-Sewing Options for Fusing Fabric

You don’t need a needle and thread to bind fabrics. There are alternative options for fabric fusing projects. In fact, the top four methods of joining fabric without sewing with a needle and thread include fusible web, fusible tape, fusible adhesive, and fabric glue.

Fusible Web

You can purchase fusible web by the yard or in sheets at your local fabrics or craft store. They come in several different options, ranging in size and weight, and therefore price. Fusible web by the yard allows you to customize the width of your pieces, while fusible sheets allow you to cut larger shapes to join larger pieces of fabric like appliqués. Fusible webbing is also commonly used to repair large tears in clothing and upholstery.

Fusible Tape

Fusible tape is very similar to fusible webbing, so they are often confused for one another. However, fusible tape comes in rolls, similar to the Scotch tape you would see on your office desk. To use fusible tape, it must be heated by an iron and pressed against fabric for permanent adherence. Due to its efficient and customizable size, fusible tape is commonly used to repair small rips in fabrics or to hold fabrics in one place. Fusible tape is also used to hold hems in place, tape loose blouse edges down, and similar clothing alterations.

Fusible Adhesive

Fusible adhesive is similar to fusible tape except that it is two-sided. One side is backed by paper, and is the side that will be pressed with an iron, while the other side is the adhesive. This is the perfect tool to use for joining two fabrics together without sewing. It comes in two varieties, sewable and non-sewable. You cannot use non-sewable adhesive if you intend to run the fabric through a sewing machine, as the adhesive will damage the needle. Sewable adhesive can be used with a sewing machine. Fusible adhesives are compatible with small appliqués and fashion lettering.

Fabric Glue

Fabric glue is pretty straightforward. It is very similar to all the other kinds of glue in the world, except that it is specially designed to be used for fabrics and fabric like materials. The fabric glue you choose will depend on the intended application, as there are different kinds for different types of materials, including leather, leather, suede, cotton, polyester, nylon, spandex, and much more. Most fabric glue products are all-inclusive, or work for a large variety of materials. This product is perfect for creating hems, repairing small holes, or fixing a small appliqué.

Sewing Safety for Beginners

Sewing is an excellent and entertaining hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. However, when you are first starting out, it is important to instill some fundamental safety rules in order to prevent sewing injuries. Things like seam rippers, fabric cutters, scissors, needles, and Rotary cutting equipment can all cause severe injuries and even amputations! So, just as we learn the safe way to handle and use scissors as a child, you will learn these same values in terms of sewing, as well as a few other interesting tips that can save you time, money, or a huge hassle.

Continue reading to learn some helpful tips and tricks for safe sewing if you are just starting out as a beginner, and where you can get help with your sewing projects that leave you stuck.

Use Thimbles and Cut-Resistant Gloves

There are several sewing apparatuses that can hurt our fingers and skin, like needles, pins, seam rippers, rotary cutters, and more. Using certain sewing tools can significantly reduce the number of Band-Aids you peel through after a sewing project. Tools like thimbles are classic, yet effective in protecting fingertips from needle points and razor cuts. In fact, thimbles were among the very first sewing tools invented. Modern sewing gear that is effective at protecting fingers and skin are sewing safety gloves. They are relatively inexpensive and the perfect tool for kids and beginner seamstresses.

Fundamental Guidelines for Sewing Safety

Aside from protective tools and apparatuses, there are certain guidelines to follow in order to remain safe while sewing. For example, it is important to never aim a seam ripper at yourself or another person. Always aim the point away from the body and do not place your hands in its way. Also, avoid poking your skin with pins. Although mild in pain, pinpoint cuts can bleed all over your garment without you realizing it, or worse, become infected.

Mind Your Rotary Cutting Equipment

Rotary cutting equipment is sharp, and can easily slice through, or slice off, a finger or piece of skin. It is important to always SLOW DOWN and take your time when using rotary rulers and cutters. Be sure to line the ruler up and then stop, keeping your fingers and hands out of its path. Also, many styles of rotary blades automatically retract, but many also do not. This means to never expect your rotary blades to automatically retract. Always be sire the blade is covered and locked before placing it down or putting it away.

Furniture Can Get Damaged From Sewing Activities Too

Although fingers and hands are important to protect, so is your furniture! Just like your skin and extremities, furniture can also be damaged by sewing tools and techniques. For example, when cutting fabric, it is always important to lay down a protective barrier on top of the surface you intend to use for a platform. Dining room tables, countertops, and more can be significantly damaged by cutters, seam rippers, and more. This leads to unsightly marks and nicks, as well as costly repairs and replacements. Try using a thick, folding cardboard poster as a liner for tables and countertops. It is thick enough to protect and easy to store.

How to Purge Your Closet for the Summer

Even though the time for spring cleaning has pretty much passed by at this point, many people are ready to purge their closets and make room for new clothes. After all, those sweaters and vests and puffer jackets won’t be of any use to you the rest of the season and the fast-approaching summer! Whether you want to reorganize your closet from fall-winter to spring-summer, create more storage space, or curate a whole new wardrobe, there are 3 simple rules to get you started and stay at the most efficient pace.

Continue reading to learn a recommended approach to re-evaluating your wardrobe.

Begin With Some Basic Organization

Start by organizing your clothing according to what can and cannot be altered for a better or updated fit. Rather than spending hundreds of dollars on a new suit or dress, have it professionally tailored. Virtually all clothing articles can be repaired, adjusted, or altered. Broken zippers, frayed fabrics, torn leather, unraveled sequence, and more can be fixed with the right professional on the job. Be sure to choose a qualified Indianapolis alterations shop for the best service and long-lasting results.

Be Prepared to Make Some Hard Decisions

When you are purging things in your closet, the goal is to make more space, either for clutter control or to make room for newer things. For this reason, you will have to equip yourself with some strength and determination to follow through with the purge. Be prepared to make some tough decisions regarding what to keep, what to stow away, and what to eliminate. You might want to hold on to the past 5 year’ worth of Halloween costumes, but encourage yourself to be reasonable.

Donate Old or Non-Redeemable Clothing

For the articles of clothing in your wardrobe that are beyond reasonable repair or repurposing, do not toss them in the garbage. Instead, donate them to people or organizations that need them, such as homeless shelters, animal shelters, school art programs, and similar places. For clothes that are perfectly good but obsolete in terms of fashion, donate them to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill center.

Keep in Mind That You Can Alter Clothes That Don’t Fit Anymore

Clothes that fit better look better. But you might have avoided altering your clothes all this time due to a misconception about cost. You might think clothing alterations are out of your budget, but the truth is, they can save you thousands of dollars in new clothing purchases. The same benefits apply to home décor like bedding and curtains. You would be surprised to learn just what professional seamstresses can fix, adjust, and repair!

What Does a Tailor Do at an Alterations Shop?

An alterations tailor is a professional seamstress that customizes or alters clothing, apparel, and other existing fabrics or garments. They are different from standard tailors because they do not typically create and fabricate clothing or apparel; instead, they alter or service existing pieces. Alterations tailors are commonly employed by large-scale department stores, clothiers, or they operate their own private business. Professional alteration specialists can alter or fix clothing, apparel, home décor, fabrics, and more. They perform these duties for men, women, adolescents, children, infants, and more.

What You Can Expect From Professional Tailoring Services

Tailors Work With Virtually All Garments and Fabrics

There is no end to the types of fabrics and clothing an alterations tailor will fix. They accept old clothing, costumes, new clothing, barely-worn clothing, wedding attire, suits, curtains, and more. These alterations can range in level of difficulty, from simple to highly complex. This is why there is no definite price or cost associated with tailoring services. It is all dependent on the amount of time, labor, and materials needed to complete the task.

Tailors Prefer to Have Client Fittings for Best Results

Most alteration specialists prefer to have their client present for measurement and assessment purposes. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. When a person cannot be present for a fitting, the alterations can be much more difficult to complete. In the case that a client cannot come in for an appointment, the tailor will simply receive the article of clothing with a tag on it, explain the alteration instructions. This is not the best case scenario for customer or tailor. Measuring the progress of a custom fitting or alteration is vital for a perfect fit or repair.

Tailors are Exceptionally Good at Clothing Repair

The most prevalent requests at an alterations shop are clothing repairs. Issues like ripped or torn clothing, stretched collars and sleeves, lapels, pockets, hemlines, and more are the most common alterations for clothing. They can even mend rugs, curtains, tablecloths, and various other fabric home décor!

They are Also the Best for Formal Clothing Alterations

As for formal wear, wedding dress alterations is by far the most popular. Almost every bride requires Indianapolis wedding dress tailoring to get that perfect fit. The same goes for bridesmaid dresses and tuxedos. Tailors are also adept at all other types of formal wear alterations, such as business suits, evening gowns, recital outfits, costumes, and more.

Tailors Need Time to Get it Just Right

Alteration shops really encourage clients to bring their garments in for modifications and repairs as early as possible to ensure they are ready by the desired date or occasion. Once in the hands of the tailor, the amount of time it takes for the alteration to be finished depends on a variety of factors, including the number of fittings needed, size of the garment, complexity of the alteration, and more. Well-established alterations shops can often provide same-day alterations and rush alterations upon request.

4 Types of Common Clothing Stains and How to Remove Them

Does it seem like no matter how hard you try your brand-new blouse or favorite tee-shirt always seems to catch a stain? Well, there are many types of stains that we encounter on a regular basis, but the four most common are arguably paint, grease, sweat, and wine! If you have dealt with clothing stains like these, it is time to learn how to clean them away and never live in fear of spilling your evening Merlot on your best dress ever again.

Continue below to learn right now!

Get Rid of These 4 Pesky Stains!

Sweat Stains

Whether you have a gym rat in the family, or you suffer from hyperhidrosis, you likely need a remedy for sweat stains on clothing, particularly the armpits. One of the most effective ways to get rid of perspiration stains is to pre-treat armpit stains with an enzyme-based stain remover, such as OxiClean® Max Force Laundry Stain Remover Spray, or Zout® Triple Enzyme Formula Laundry Stain Remover Spray. Simply pre-treat the affected area, and then launder as usual.

You can also make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Combine equal parts (1/4 cup of each is plenty for one shirt) of water, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. Next, apply it directly to the stained areas, then scrub it in with your scrubbing brush. When thoroughly scrubbed in, rinse clean with water.

Grease Stains

The upside to having a fresh grease stain on your garment is that there is a product on the market that is proven to combat grease, and it’s safe on clothing! Simply reach for the Dawn liquid dish soap to remove grease stains from clothes. Apply a generous amount with your fingers, rub it in, then rinse it away with clean water. You may have to repeat these steps a few times, but the formula in the detergent works well at pulling the grease up and out of clothing fibers.

Paint Stains

Because different paints react to different removal methods, the first step to cleaning paint off of your clothes is finding out which type of paint you are dealing with. For latex paint, use a butter knife to scrap the dry paint off inside and out. Next, run your garment under warm water and then blot it dry using a paper towel. Last, flip it inside out, rinse it again, treat it with liquid detergent, then launder as usual.

For acrylic paint stains, scrape off as much paint as you can, then blot the affected area with paint thinner using a cotton ball or paper towel. Do this inside and out, and then blot it again using liquid detergent. Finish by washing it in the laundry as you usually would.

Red Wine Stains

Spilling or splattering red wine on your clothes can really put a damper on the whole experience of having a glass or two of wine to begin with. But did you know you can easily remove a fresh red wine stain from your clothes using white wine? It’s true! The white wine has the same consistency and density as red wine, so by pouring some white over a red wine spill, you push the red wine up and out of the clothing fibers, making it easier to blot and rinse away.

This method is not recommended for light or white clothing. For garments of these hues, remove red wine by combining Dawn dishwashing soap and hydrogen peroxide, then applying generously over the stain. Let is soak all the way in, and then launder as usually immediately. This usually does the trick!

4 Fabrics You Should Never Machine Wash

Your laundry day does not have to cause you stress. By educating yourself on the best practices for washing all sorts of garments and fabrics, you can better preserve and protect your clothing and more. Although modern innovation gives us incredibly smart and highly-advanced features on modern-day washing machines, there are still some fabrics that should never be tossed into them.

Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077
Indianapolis Alterations 317-845-9077

Fabrics Than Cannot Be Washed in the Machine

The top 4 fabrics that should never be machine washed are cashmere, which you likely already knew about, as well as wool, leather, and silk. Whether clothing, home décor, or something else of value, be sure to wash these fabrics by hand, or at the local dry cleaner. Here’s why:

Cashmere

As you already know if you own anything cashmere, it is a very delicate material. So, it should not be a surprise to learn that cashmere should never been washed in the machine. Instead, take your cashmere items to a local dry cleaner for optimal care. Or, read the care instructions on the label, which will likely tell you to hand wash and dry flat.

Wool

Just like cashmere, wool is prone to all sorts of damage in the washing machine. It is best to entrust your wool laundering to a local dry cleaning company, or follow the care instructions on the tag, which usually say to hand wash in mild detergent, and dry flat.

Leather

As you can surmise, leather is not something you want to put in a washing machine under any circumstances. Not only can machine washing cause leather to shrink, but it can also cause it to permanently crinkle, misshapen, warp, discolor, and even tear. Leather should be hand-cleaned using leather-safe products and microfiber cloths. Also, learn how to get ink out of leather.

Silk

Silk is one of the softest, most delicate fabrics available in the world. Pure silk is very expensive, as it comes from the organic matter made by silkworms. It takes 12 pounds of fully-spun silkworm cocoons to produce 1 pound of pure silk material! And although silk is surprisingly durable and strong, it is far too delicate and valuable to ever machine wash. Even the cost-effective alternatives to silk fabric are not suited for machine washing.

Additional Items to Keep Out of the Washing Machine:

Structured garments like blazers, pleated skirts, or jackets with shoulder pads should not be washed in a machine, as they will warp and become misshapen.

Garments with embellishments on them, like bobbles, pearls, beads, and sequence might come apart or snag if machine washed.

Bras are not a good candidate for machine washing because they can misshapen, stretch out, or their clasps can snag and catch on other items.

Formal dresses and formal wear should also not be placed in the machine for washing. These are often made of fine fabrics not well suited for machine washing, like silk and satin. Also, they usually have appliques and embellishments, like crystals, pearls, lace, and more.

Tips for Sewing Quilted Cotton Clothing

Quilted cotton clothing is a familiar staple in almost everyone’s closet. This medium weight cotton material works well with all body types, shapes, heights, and drapes, making it a perfect addition to your wardrobe. But when your quilted cotton clothes need some altering, you might want to review some important tips for sewing clothing made of quilted cotton. Continue reading to do just that!

Indianapolis Clothing Repair
Indianapolis Clothing Repair and Alterations 317-845-9077

Quilted Cotton Clothes are Stiffer Than Other Cotton Fabrics

Quilted cotton is often used to make purses, bags, and you guessed it, quilts, but many clothing garments are also made from such materials. Because quilted cotton is a stiffer type of fabric compared to other types of cotton materials, many people are hesitant about sewing it up or making repairs. But if your cotton skirt or button-down jacket snags or tears, don’t be intimidated by the repair project. So long as you have sewing experience and know how to use your sewing machine, you should be just fine. If not, there are always professional alteration shops you can rely on to help you correct any sewing mistakes or alteration errors you’ve made.

Here are some fundamental tips to follow when sewing quilted cotton clothes:

?? Know Your Limit – As mentioned, if you are nothing more than a novice seamstress, it is not wise to attempt your own clothing repairs or projects. Even if you are a sewing hobbyist, be sure you know your talent’s limit. If you believe that the repair is too complex, it is best to leave it to a professional. If you are attempting a full clothing creation, be sure to take on a pattern that is simple and straightforward, like one without sleeves. Sleeves are hard to manage as a beginner in sewing.

?? Have the Right Tools – The right tools mean everything when it comes to any repair. As for quilted cotton, the same theory applies. Before repairing or altering a quilted cotton piece, be sure you are fully equipped with the proper materials and tools to get the job done to specification. For quilted cotton specifically, have on hand marking tools, cutting tools, thread, lining, and your sewing machine set up and accessories.

?? Practice Makes Perfect – Because quilted cotton is stiffer, it is sometimes more challenging to work with, especially of you do not have experience working with it before. Even if you are a pro at sewing, like a player up to bat, you might need a few practice swings before making your final stitches or alterations. So, use some scrap pieces of quilted cotton fabric to practice the type of stitch required to repair or modify your garment.

4 Ways to Prevent a Sewing Machine From Swallowing Fine Fabric

As someone who uses the sewing machine often, you know there is nothing more frustrating than that moment your fabric gets sucked under the needle plate. No matter how easily your sewing project is coasting along as you run your fabric through your machine, this sewing blunder can happen to anyone at any moment in time. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent your sewing machine from destroying your fine fabrics. After all these materials are not cheap; right? So, we must protect them at all costs. Plus, we want our finished pieces to come out perfect!

Rather than researching every single possible way you can prevent sewing machine fabric swallowing, simply continue below to learn the top four methods that are sure to work for you.

Indianapolis Clothing Repair and Alterations
Indianapolis Clothing Repair and Alterations 317-845-9077

Switch to a Finer Needle

When sewing with fine fabrics, one of the best ways to prevent sewing machine swallowing problems is to simply switch to a finer needle. You can find the vast array of needle types and sizes at any local fabric or craft store, as well as online, through various vendors and retailers. Opt for needled labelled 60 or 70 on the pack.

Cover the Needle Plate Hole

Although this might sound like it could impede your sewing project process, using a but a sticky tape to cover the needle plate hole is a great way to quickly stop a sewing machine from swallowing up your fine fabrics. Try to use a very small piece of tape, as small as you can make it while still covering the hole. Then, before you begin stitching, pierce a single hole in the tape with your sewing machine.

Never Start on a Raw Edge

Beginning your sewing work on the raw edge of a piece of fabric is a common novice sewing mistake. What sewing enthusiasts eventually learn is, doing so will cause your sewing machine to suck up your fabric underneath the needle plate. So, in order to prevent this from happening one surefire precaution is to never start sewing on a raw edge. For pleats and darts, start from the inside and work your way towards the edges. For seams, start a little inward from the edge.

Consider Chain Stitching

Another common method to prevent a sewing machine from swallowing up fabrics, especially fine fabrics, is to use the chain stitching approach. Chain stitching is the process of sewing together multiple pieces without stopping in between to lower or raise the presser foot. This technique is often used to speed up the sewing process. For those in a hurry, chain stitching is your go to sewing machine method.

Whether you are preparing for a wedding or simply having some wardrobe malfunctions, the right alterations can be just what you need. Continue below to review some of the most common questions about dress alterations, including their answers!

What Can I Do if My Dress is Too Long? What if it is too short?

A simple dress hem is the perfect solution to a dress that is too long. This is a simple job that can be done in as little as a day or two. Oppositely, if your dress is a tad bit too short, there is a perfectly good solution for that too! Your tailor can add more fabric, or perhaps an under layer of tulle or chiffon, to make it the right length.

Can I Have a Zipper Removed From a Dress?

Many women buy fall in love with a dress, but not the gaudy and uncomfortable zipper in the back. Again, this is a common and simple alteration that can be completed in just a day or so. It is recommended to not try to remove a zipper on your own, as it requires specific sewing tools and hands-on experience to do it flawlessly.

What Do I Need to Bring to My Dress Fitting?

When you show up for your fitting, be sure to bring your shoes you plan to wear with you. If you plan to swap shoes in the middle of your event, bring those shoes too. It is also important to bring all other accessories you plan to use or wear on your wedding day to be sure they work with your alterations, including all undergarments you plan to wear, as well as any veils, gloves, hosiery, jewelry, and more. This helps to see if the sizes, designs, shapes, and fits work with the dress and the alterations.

Can I Alter a Dress Myself?

If you have a lot of hands-on sewing and fashionista experience, then go for it! But if you are planning to watch some instructional videos online and them attempt a dress alteration yourself, please reconsider. Although people online might make it look really easy to bring in a waist or shorten a hemline, there are more variables to it than you think. Always entrust a professional tailor for any dress alteration needs if you want flawless results that look as if you bought the dress that way!
